Abstract

Helminthiasis are a group of parasitic worms that are transmitted to humans from one host to another through the soil. These cases are commonly found in preschool and elementary school children. The purpose of this community service activity is to educate students at SDN 2 Toronipa about clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS) as an effort to prevent or reduce cases of helminthiasis in children. The activity involved dissemination through educational sessions, distribution of posters, handwashing demonstrations, and measurement of weight and height. The results showed that the students understood the educational material provided, resulting in an increase in knowledge before and after the education. The participants' response to the activity was very good and enthusiastic. Therefore, educational sessions are one of the ways to disseminate information or education to students about helminthiasis and PHBS.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remains one of the public health issues that needs to be watched out for, especially in areas with high population density. One simple, inexpensive, and effective vector control effort is the use of ovitraps as traps for Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs. This community service program was implemented in Hajimena Village with the aim of increasing residents' understanding and skills in making and utilizing ovitraps as a preventive measure against DHF. The methods used included socialization, practical training in making ovitraps, installation at mosquito breeding sites, and monitoring for four weeks. The participants consisted of 33 residents, cadres, and village health workers. The results of the activity showed a 14.58% increase in residents' knowledge based on pre- and post-tests, as well as an increase in skills in making ovitraps. These findings prove that ovitraps not only function as a means of vector control but are also effective as an applicable, inexpensive, and sustainable educational medium. Therefore, this program is expected to be widely implemented as a community empowerment strategy in dengue fever prevention efforts.

Abstract

Fluor albus, or pathological vaginal discharge, is a common reproductive health disorder experienced by women of childbearing age (WUS). The primary cause is often related to Candida albicans fungal infection. Azole-based pharmacological therapy is known to be effective, but has the potential to cause resistance and side effects. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge and skills of WUS in the Keputran Village, Surabaya, regarding the use of mulberry leaf decoction (Morus alba L.) as an alternative herbal treatment for fluor albus. The activity included health education, demonstrations on how to make herbal concoctions, and evaluation of participants' knowledge through discussions and questions and answers. The results showed a 90% increase in community knowledge regarding the prevention and treatment of fluor albus, and 85% of participants expressed interest in implementing this herbal treatment. This activity demonstrates that community empowerment through an educational approach and hands-on practice can increase awareness and independence in maintaining women's reproductive health naturally and sustainably.

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out as part of the “Breastfeeding Together Festival” with the theme “Breastfeeding is a Journey, Let's Accompany Mothers,” organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Indonesian Breastfeeding Mothers Association (AIMI) Yogyakarta. The program aimed to strengthen maternal and child health promotion through collaboration among academia, local government, and community organizations. This descriptive study utilized secondary data from onsite health examinations and questionnaires (n = 20 mother-child dyads) to describe maternal-child nutritional and health profiles and identify family support patterns related to exclusive breastfeeding. A participatory approach was employed through interactive education sessions, lactation counseling, and basic health assessments. Most children had normal weight-for-length/height Z-scores (80% within −2 to +2 SD; 20% overweight), and 80% had normal head circumference. All mothers had a mid-upper arm circumference ≥ 23.5 cm, indicating no chronic energy deficiency, although 65% were overweight or obese and 15% had prehypertension or hypertension. Family and social support were high (spousal support 90%; maternal grandparents 65%), and the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding reached 90%. These findings underscore the importance of integrating postpartum monitoring and targeted lactation counseling with maternal-child health screening, including nutrition education, portion control, and safe physical activity, within primary care. Future initiatives should expand digital education, routine maternal-child health monitoring, and community-based lactation support networks to strengthen a sustainable ecosystem for breastfeeding mothers.

Abstract

The decline in oral health among the elderly remains a persistent community issue, primarily influenced by limited health literacy, reduced motor abilities, and a lack of regular preventive care. This community service program focused on improving oral health literacy and promoting proper daily oral hygiene practices among older adults through targeted educational interventions. The purpose of this activity was to enhance participants' understanding of common oral problems in aging, including dental caries, periodontal disease, and denture-related conditions, as well as to strengthen their skills in performing effective and safe oral care at home. The program employed an interactive approach consisting of health education sessions, visual demonstrations of toothbrushing and denture-cleaning techniques, and guided practice with direct supervision. Additional supporting materials were provided to reinforce learning retention. The results of the program indicated a noticeable increase in participants' knowledge, greater confidence in performing oral hygiene independently, and improved awareness of the importance of routine dental check-ups. Participants also reported better understanding of the relationship between systemic conditions-such as diabetes and hypertension-and oral health status. In conclusion, this community engagement activity effectively improved oral health literacy and encouraged better oral care behaviors among the elderly. Sustained implementation of periodic education, collaboration with community health cadres, and integration of oral health promotion into routine elderly health services are recommended to support longterm improvements in oral health and overall well-being.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease with a steadily increasing incidence in Indonesia. Lack of public knowledge about prevention, early detection, and management of DM is a contributing factor to the high risk of this disease. This community service activity aims to increase public awareness and knowledge about diabetes mellitus and provide free health checks for early detection. The activity methods include counseling using leaflets and PowerPoint presentations, question and answer discussions, and random blood sugar and blood pressure checks. The activity was held at the Anggrek 2 Integrated Health Post (Posyandu), Duren 3 Community Health Center (Puskesmas Pembantu), Pancoran District, South Jakarta, with the participation of 35 participants. The results showed that 17.1% of participants had random blood sugar results ≥200 mg/dl (diabetes category), 14.3% were in the risk category, and 68.5% were within the normal range. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and increased understanding of the importance of early detection and a healthy lifestyle. This activity successfully raised public awareness of the importance of routine health checks and became the first step in preventing diabetes mellitus in the community.

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) is a promotive and preventive effort that plays a crucial role in preventing environment-based diseases, particularly among school-aged children in coastal areas. MTs Darul Ulum Sasa, located in the coastal area of Ternate City, is a school where the implementation of PHBS remains relatively low. This community service activity aimed to improve students' knowledge regarding PHBS through health education. A participatory approach was employed, consisting of pre-test, interactive educational sessions, discussions, and post-test. The activity was conducted on April 11, 2025, involving 18 students of MTs Darul Ulum Sasa. A multiple-choice questionnaire was used as the evaluation instrument to measure students' knowledge before and after the educational intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in the mean knowledge score from 59.09 ± 29.10 in the pre-test to 79.55 ± 15.27 in the post-test, with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that PHBS education was effective in enhancing students' understanding of the importance of personal and environmental hygiene.

Abstract

Adolescent health problems have become increasingly complex due to a shift from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which often begin during school age, with nutritional status and blood pressure serving as key risk indicators. This community service activity aimed to describe the nutritional status and blood pressure profile of students at SMA 8 Muhammadiyah Kisaran as an effort for early detection of NCD risk. A descriptive study design with a basic health screening approach was employed, involving cross-sectional measurements of Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure among 91 students selected through total sampling. The results showed that most students had normal nutritional status (47.3%); however, notable proportions were classified as underweight (19.8%), overweight (22.0%), and obese (11.0%). Cases of prehypertension and hypertension were more frequently observed among students with overweight and obese BMI categories. These findings indicate a tendency toward increased risk of blood pressure disorders as BMI increases in adolescents. In conclusion, basic health screening is an effective tool for mapping adolescent health risks and provides an important foundation for planning school-based promotive and preventive health programs. Therefore, routine screening integrated with nutrition education, physical activity promotion, and appropriate health follow-up for at-risk students is strongly recommended

Abstract

Snack foods are an inseparable part of the daily dietary pattern of school-aged children because they are practical, easily accessible, and affordable. However, most school snacks available have low nutritional quality, being high in carbohydrates and fats while low in protein and essential micronutrients. This condition may lead to excessive macronutrient intake and contribute to an increased risk of overnutrition and overweight. The objective of this community service activity was to improve mothers’ knowledge and skills in providing nutritious snack foods through the preparation of catfish pempek (Clarias sp.) with the addition of tempeh flour (Rhizopus sp.). The activity was conducted at the Nogorejo Village Community Hall, Galang Subdistrict, on July 31, 2025. The preparation stage included obtaining permits, coordinating with the PKK leader to determine participants and the schedule, developing leaflets, and conducting trial production of pempek in the food technology laboratory of the nutrition department. The implementation stage consisted of nutrition education on healthy snacks, explanation and demonstration of pempek preparation, product tasting, and preference evaluation. Participants included 30 PKK members, Posyandu cadres, mothers of toddlers, and mothers of school-aged children. The results showed high participant enthusiasm, demonstrated by a quiz of four questions that were all answered correctly. Evaluation indicated that all participants found the activity useful and satisfying. Sensory evaluation showed 100% acceptance of taste, aroma, and texture, although 10% disliked the aroma due to a fishy smell.
