Abstract

The position of arts patrons is that of importance. The audience is the reason why the artist is there. Without their presence, the theatre experience is incomplete. This work examines the different categories of audiences that exist and the audience development strategies often employed. It identifies that the development of audiences for the theatre is prosecuted at two different but related levels; the first focuses on attracting attention to the event while the second gears towards sustaining the interest so generated. These issues are pertinent and vital and should be considered if theatre is to thrive, especially in this era where it is in serious competition with other modes.

Abstract

One burning issue in Nigeria today especially around the oil producing areas is that of the absolute ownership and control of the natural resources (oil) that God has endowed the people with. In the last thirty years if not more, the agitation has become more fiece from demand for self-determination, in the 60s to Kiama declaration in the 70s and recently to resource control. Every successive government in the country has come out with policies to calm the situation and even to ameliorate the hardship suffered by the people due to the negative effects of the exploitation of the oil mineral and other natural resources. Despite the above, the agitations are still on going. These come with various conferences, workshops, seminars symposia and radio and television talks on this issue by many stakeholders in Nigeria. Some of these agitations have become violent and various other crimes in the country. The various agitations are predicted on the right of the people to own and control (their) natural resources. The question then is, who are these indigenous people? What are their rights over the natural resources in their domain? What does Nigerian legislation say about the natural resources found beneath the earth in the country? And what will be the way forward?

Abstract

There exist prospects and opportunities for the protection of Reproductive Health Rights in the Nigerian Legal System. Nigeria has ratified severalInternational/Regional Human Rights instruments which seek to protect reproductive rights, there are some Human Rights provisions contained in the constitution, some other provisions on Federal and State Legislations that are gender based. There are also the reports on Millennium Development Goals and National Reproductive Health Policies which shows that there are prospects and opportunities that the government can protect women’s reproductive health and rights in Nigeria. Nonetheless, there is undoubtedly room for improvement in the protection of this peculiar genre of rights of women in Nigeria and this work proffers country-centric recommendations which cut across options of amending relevant Constitutional and Federal/State legislations on Reproductive Health Rights. The country will certainly benefit from an implementation of the National Reproductive Health policies that have evolved overtime and domesticating some of the international and regional instruments that has been ratified like CEDAW whilst enacting a National Reproductive Health Law by National Assembly which will be uniformly adopted and implemented  throughout the country.
Ibuanyidanda and the Principle of Non-Contradiction: A Logico-Metaphysica Discourse of Asouzu’s Complementary Uzoigwe, Elias Ifeanyi E.

Abstract

Ibuanyidanda and The Principle of Non-Contradiction aims at instantiating the claims of Asouzu’s Complementary Reflection that whatever exists serves as a missing link of reality. Reality has been construed within a bifurcating frame of mind, a project that was characterized by the elitist mindset of Plato and was further espoused in Aristotle’s philosophy of essence. For Aristotle, the wise is destined to rule the unwise. This divisive mentality permeates the entire Western culture. Unfortunately, Placid Tempels made some African scholars to erroneously believe and argue that the Western understanding of being is static, while that of Africa is dynamic. This anomaly, among other things, is what Ibuanyidanda as a philosophy and a method of doing philosophy sets out to address. Ibuanyidanda ontology contends that reality can be better understood from the complementary point of view. The principle of non-contradiction championed by Aristotle and the Western scholars sees the opposite of being as non-being, but Asouzu’s complementary reflection sees the opposite of being as to be alone (ka so mu di). This work holds that ibuanyidanda complementary reflection is capable of handling the problems of contradiction that are apparent in the Western mode of philosophising. Opposites do not contradict themselves, they complement each other. Ibuanyidanda philosophy and its position are contrary to the views of Aristotle’s metaphysics and open to sight ontological updating - a good recipe for the advancement of 21st-century philosophizing. Analytic, textual, contextual, and historical methods are employed in this work.

Abstract

Many thinkers tend to glide over the differences between the ethical thoughts of Plato and his protégé Aristotle. This study is a critical discourse on whether and how Aristotle’s ethical thought seems to differ from Plato’s. Most contemporary ethicist regards both as virtue-ethicists. This is equally applicable to pre-modernist ethics. As such, ethics for the most part lays much emphasis on elements of character. However, it would seem that there are deep crevices between Plato’s and Aristotle’s ethical positions. These differences arise from fundamentally different metaphysical positions regarding the unity of being especially as adumbrated in the sixth chapter of the Nicomachean Ethics where Aristotle applies this doctrine to his Ethics. For Plato, on the other hand, all knowledge comes from knowledge of a Form, which is a universal or genus in which individuals or species share or participate. The possibility of a Philosopher King depends on the fact that there is on Form (Being as such) which encompasses everything else. Therefore, one who has knowledge of this form is in possession of the master science that subsumes all other knowledge. For Aristotle, the universality of being is not the same as that of other universals, and so cannot be the subject of a supreme science, except to show why it is not possible in the way we see in Plato’s Republic. Understanding this shows how philosophy relates to everyday life.

Abstract

This paper sees the leadership problem in Nigeria (which is motivated by the pursuit of personal gains and comfort) as a major consequence of economic slowdown in Nigeria. It argues that the Nigerian leaders, past and present, have consciously and without any form of regret to its attendant negative consequences built the psychology of polarisation, bifurcation, ethnic sentiment and the growing mind-set of the nearer the better and the safer. The paper argues further that the whole network of operation in Nigeria has been affected as a result of this ugly phenomenon and it proposes that Ibuanyidanda philosophy which seeks to recognise the potency of the collectively of a social enclave would be a therapeutic healing balm for sound leadership recovery and economic prosperity. The choice of Ibuanyidanda as predicated in this paper is very germane as it does not involve itself in the philosophy of isolation, but believes strongly in the unity of components for progress. It aligns itself with the logic and method of “noetic propaedeutic pedagogy” which simply means the re-examination, re-education of the self for optimal progress and development. Within the ambit of Ibuanyidanda Philosophy, an all- inclusive approach to solving a challenge remains the guiding principle. It evidently abhors the seemingly held view of winner takes all that has characterized and orchestrated the present political system in Nigeria which its negative consequences are economic doom and or slow down. This paper rightly contends that applying Ibuanyidanda Philosophy strict sense will not only navigate the process of economic prosperity but will further ensure all-inclusive environmental atmosphere for leadership participation, gender balance, ethnic/religious tolerance and social cohesion in line with global best practice and 21st century logic of peaceful co-existence. The paper shall adopt critical, analytic, expository and rational methods.
