Abstract

This article aims to examine the strategic role of Muhammadiyah in strengthening the face of moderate Islam in contemporary Indonesia. The study focuses on Muhammadiyah’s contributions in the fields of education, philanthropy, and digital da‘wah, which represent the implementation of Islam Berkemajuan within a dynamic social context. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach, drawing on academic literature and recent institutional documents. The findings indicate that Muhammadiyah’s educational institutions serve as strategic platforms for instilling values of religious moderation while fostering the emergence of a tolerant and inclusive generation. Meanwhile, Muhammadiyah’s philanthropic practices, particularly through LAZISMU, demonstrate humanitarian dedication that reaches across religious, ethnic, and social boundaries, thereby reinforcing the organization’s role in preserving pluralism. In the realm of da‘wah, Muhammadiyah has adaptively utilized technology and digital platforms to respond to the challenges of the information disruption era. Overall, this study affirms that despite facing the challenges of leadership regeneration and rapid social change, Muhammadiyah continues to demonstrate resilience and relevance. Through its Islam Berkemajuan approach, Muhammadiyah has succeeded in integrating normative Islamic values with contemporary needs in a contextual manner, thereby consistently positioning itself as a pioneer of inclusive, tolerant, and progressive Islam in Indonesia

Abstract

Despite extensive scholarship on Islamic moderation in Indonesia, existing studies have not systematically explained why debates about wasatiyyah persist among actors who share fundamental moderate commitments. This study examines how Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Indonesia's two largest Islamic organizations construct competing visions of wasatiyyah through Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) and Islam Nusantara (Archipelagic Islam). Drawing on Gallie's essentially contested concepts, Bourdieu's field theory, and social movement framing theory, the study employs a qualitative comparative case study based on document analysis of official organizational sources from 2015 to 2024. The analysis across four challenges digital radicalism, transnational Islamic movements, state religious moderation policy, and internal diversity reveals that while both organizations share commitments to the Indonesian nation-state, Pancasila, and the rejection of violence, they articulate moderation through systematically different framings, state-positioning strategies, and institutional mechanisms shaped by distinct capital configurations. Muhammadiyah maintains critical distance from state power, emphasizing education-based responses, while NU pursues strategic partnership and mobilization-based approaches. The study demonstrates that wasatiyyah functions as an essentially contested concept whose meaning is constituted through ongoing organizational contestation. These findings contribute to debates on Islamic moderation by showing that the resilience of Indonesian Islam lies in its internal plurality rather than definitional uniformity, with implications for comparative studies in other Muslim-majority contexts

Abstract

The rapid development of digital communication technologies has transformed public relations practices in organizational communication. Social media platforms enable organizations to interact directly with audiences, disseminate institutional values, and strengthen relationships with stakeholders. This study examines digital public relations practices in Muhammadiyah’s cadreization communication through the Instagram account @mpksdi_ppm. The research aims to identify patterns of digital public relations communication, map strategic principles supporting Muhammadiyah’s cadreization process, and analyze factors influencing the effectiveness of cadreization content on social media. This study employed a qualitative exploratory approach using digital content observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. Data were collected through interviews with seven informants, including social media managers, organizational leaders, Instagram followers, and representatives of Muhammadiyah regional organizations. Observations were conducted on social media management and content production processes at the office of the Council for Cadre Development and Human Resources of Muhammadiyah (MPKSDI). The findings reveal three main strategic principles of digital public relations: value-based messaging, visual storytelling, and audience engagement. Instagram functions not only as a documentation platform but also as a strategic communication channel for disseminating ideological values and strengthening Muhammadiyah cadre identity. Digital public relations practices contribute to expanding communication reach, facilitating knowledge dissemination among cadres, and reinforcing Muhammadiyah’s institutional identity in the digital environment
