Abstract

The aim of this study was to (1) find out the learning needs of X grade of Beauty Program students at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan in improving their reading skills, (2) develop relevant reading materials by using Genre Based Approach for X grade students of Beauty Program at SMK Pariwisata Imelda Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development which is adapted from Borg, Gall and Gall (2003). The data was taken from the observation, questionnaires, and interview. The materials were validated by an English lecture and an English teacher by using validation sheets which is adapted from BSNP. The data were collected by using descriptive analysis. The result of this study shows that: (1) the existing materials do not support the students major because the topics of the materials are still general, (2) relevant reading materials are needed by students in vocational school especially in Beauty Program. These materials were developed by using Genre Based Approach, (3) the developed reading materials by using Genre Based had been validated with the score 3.69 from expert 1 and 3.83 from expert 2 which is in the range of 3.25 < ≤ 4.00. These materials have been developed in accordance to the students’ need by using Genre Based Approach.Keywords: English reading materials, Genre Based Approach, Vocational High School

Abstract

This research was aimed at describing the extent to which strategy does the teachers use in teaching descriptive writing to students at Junior High School and finds out the reasons underlying the teachers using certain theory. The strategy which the teachers use was analyzed by following the theory of Johns’ Scaffolding Strategy (2010). Scaffolding Strategy divided into Explicit Implementation consist of three types namely (1) modeling; (2) joint negotiation and (3) independent construction. And the other one is Implicit Implementation which consists of four types namely (1) dimly felt of sense; (2) begin composing; (3) course composing and (4) external feedback. The data was analyzed following Miles and Huberman theory of qualitative research (1994). The research findings showed that, the English teachers are using all three types of explicit implementation and only one type of implicit implementations, namely external feedback. And the reasons underlying teachers using these implementations are (1) the teachers want to vivid students’ knowledge about the generic structure, language features and social functions of descriptive text, (2) teachers want the students to understand more and get familiar with descriptive text in real life, (3) teachers wants to know students’ ability in applying their knowledge of descriptive text on their own-making descriptive text and (4) enlighten students on how to criticize their friends’ work.Keywords: Descriptive, scaffolding, explicit implementation, implicit implementation

Abstract

The objective of this thesis are: to find out the implementation of the persuasive language used in the promotion strategy of Gelar Melayu Serumpun (GeMeS), and to find out the persuasive language occure in Gelar Melayu Serumpun (GeMeS). The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The data analysis of this thesis are library research, brochures, articles , invitation letters and social media. The data used in this study are the persuasive language of the Medan City Tourism Office as the organizer of the GeMeS event totaling three informant. The informant as the employee of Medan City Tourism Office is needed to complete the data. The persuasive language carried out by the GeMeS event organizers occure by distribusing various form of promotional media such as brochures, articles, invitation letters and social media. Medan City Tourism Office.The result showed that the implementation of the persuasive language used in the promotion strategy of the Serumpun Malay title (GeMeS) was divided into three parts, namely advertising persuasion, propaganda persuasion, and education persuasion.Keywords: Strategy, Promotion, Arts and Malay Culture, and Persuasion Language.

Abstract

The objective of the study were investigate the types of teacher’s feedback on writing which given by the teacher’s and to find out how the teacher’s gave feedback on writing recount text on the grade eight, to elaborate the reasons of the teacher conducting the feedback on students writing of grade eight in MTs Tarbiyah Islamiyah Hajoran. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The data was analyzed in four steps: 1). Data Collection, 2) Data Condensation, 3) Data Display, 4) Conclusion and Drawing/ verifying. The findings There were two types of feedback found on students’ writing recount text on the grade eight students of MTs Tarbiyah Islamiyah Hajoran. They were : Direct and Indirect. First the teacher gave direct feedback by giving some signs to indicate their error words such as circle,line and crosswise then provide the corect form directly. The teacher also added the letters or words to make the clear sentence. Direct feedback which is provided in the 37 of the total feedback and has perecentage as many as 79%. Second , it was indirect feedback, the indicated the students error exists without gave the correct form. It has many percentages 21% of 10 the total feedback. Based on the analysis interview, the reason why the teacher used those types of feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students’ have more vocabularies and the students did not think more about what was the correct word. In conclusion, teacher’s feedback are important to make student aware of making mistake on their writing task. The finding suggested that the English teacher should give the written feedback to students’ writing task to enable the improve the writing skill.Keywords: Teachers’ feedback, Students, Recount Text, Writing

Abstract

The objectives of this thesis is, firstly, to find out the kinds of code-mixing in the restaurant with daily conversation between crew and customer, and fellow crew. Secondly, to find out the factors make code mixing occurs. Thirdly, To find out the reason why do the customers use code mixing. This research was conducted from September 14th until September 15th 2020 in Hokben Sun Plaza. In this research, the researcher using research qualitative. Researcher explain the kinds of code mixing divided into 6 classifications by choosing theory from suwito (1985). The researcher collected the data by using unstructured interview and simple documentation like taking a voice recording. The result of this research showed the kinds of code mixing found in the words of data conversation between crew and customer and fellow crew, and find some factors make code mixing occurs in Hokben Restaurant.Keywords: Sosiolingustics, Code Mixing, Hokben Restaurant.

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying how the students of natural and social science majors write descriptive text writing based on the usage of process. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The sources of data were taken from natural and social science students’ descriptive text writing. The results of this research showed that the natural science and social science students used types of process differently in writing their descriptive text. The students from natural science used relational process as the dominant type of process in their description. From 150 types of process used in 13 texts, they use 104 relational processes, it’s 69.33%. They tend to use verbs such as ‘be/is/am/are as attributes and identifications, they also tend to use ‘have/has’ which refers to possession. On the other hand, the dominant type of process used in social science students’ descriptive text writing is existential process. From 107 types of process used in 13 texts, 50 (46.7%) of them are existential process. The findings of the study also showed that the different use of types of process from natural and social science students affected their way in describing object and their way in writing descriptive texts.Keywords: Descriptive, Writing, Process, Natral Science, Social Science

Abstract

The study was aimed to see whether teachers’ experiences are reflected in teaching descriptive text to grade VIII students of SMPN 2 Medan or not. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method through a collection of techniques used to specify, delineate, or describe naturally occurring phenomena without experimental manipulation. The data were gathered by administering interview to three English teachers with different years of experience and observing their teaching of descriptive text during a classroom session. The observation and interview result proved that the three English teachers did not reflect their teaching experience when teaching descriptive text to the students. The reason why the three English teach descriptive text in the ways they do varied from one to the other.Keywords: Experience, Descriptive Text, Qualitative Descriptive Research

Abstract

This study aims to develop English Reading Material for Grade Eleven of Islamic Students at SMA Nurul Islam Indonesia Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI IPA consisting of 30 students and one of the English teachers. The instrumentation for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After Analyzing the data, the researcher got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administrating interview to English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 30 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the Islamic 1 students of XI IPA need English reading materials which contain Islamic content. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. Then the procedure texts related to their background of knowledge. The products have been validated by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4.6 or 92% from English lecturer and 4.4 or 89% from English teacher. It means the developing materials are categorize as relevant or appropriate for grade eleven of Islamic students.Keywords: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Islamic students

Abstract

The problem of the study in this research is: how is the procedure for the Malam Bainai process at the Minangkabau community wedding ceremony and what is the meaning contained in the implementation of the Malam Bainai at the Minangkabau community wedding ceremony. The research design used is a qualitative descriptive research method by using Pierce’s theory. Then, the informants of this research are people who understand Minangkabau cultures, such as Masters of art and culture who graduated from the University of arts in Padang Panjang, overseas arts, and culture teachers from Padang Panjang, and people who are members of the Minangkabau community in Medan City. The results showed that the Malam Bainai procedure consisted of four series, namely Bamandi, Meniti kain kuniang, Malam Bainai, and Bakameh-kameh. The meaning of the Malam Bainai ceremony is carried out as a form of cultural heritage that has been carried out from generation to generation and as a form of releasing girls from their parents to become brides and companions in other people's lives.Keywords: Linguistics, Semiotics, Malam Bainai, Minangkabau Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the student’s perceptions towards the use of Google Classroom. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Aek Natas. The research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was thirty-one students of SMAN 1 Aek Natas grade X have been using Google Classroom for teaching English. The results shows that Google Classroom is being helped for the students for study during this pandemic. Online learning can not completely replace conventional learning in the class but this system needs to be continuously developed for more effective learning.Keywords: Students' perceptions, Google Classroom, English teaching.
