Abstract

Writing is one of skills in English and it’s important for students, also it is not an easy skill to master. As stated by Richards and Renandya (2002: 303), writing is the most difficult skill to master for second or foreign language students. Writing skills are placed in the last section after three skills namely listening, speaking, and reading. It can be said that students must apply everything they have in the previous three stages. This study aims to develop a writing assessment rubric for explanation text for eleventh grade, to assess student writing related to the availability of the 2013 Curriculum for English subjects in the school. This research is about how and why, which is the process of explanation text itself and at the same time can improve their writing skills. This research method uses research and development methods (R&D). It is hoped that by using reliable rubrics, teachers can easily assess the writing performance of their students who meet the requirements of the writing aspects.The expert gives some corrections and suggestions on the development writing assessment rubric. Based on the result of the writing assessment rubric, the average was 3,7 and the percentage was 93,7% that categorized in “Very Good” category. Keywords: Assessment Rubric, Students’ Explanation Text, Writing

Abstract

 The objective of this study was to find out whether  using Famous People Model in writing descriptive  can improve students’ achievement in writing descritive text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of consisted of 4 classes. Two classes were taken as the sample by using random sampling technique. The class X-1 was as experimental group and X-2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Famous People Model, otherwise control group was taught by using conventional technique. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that Famous People Model has a significant effect on students achievement in writing descriptive text. The result shows that the t-observed is higher than t-table (3.102 > 2.024 (α-0.05)) with the degree of freedom (n) = 20. Therefore,Famous People Model significantly affects on the students’ ability in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kadar tanin pada rotan di Hutan Penelitian Aek-Nauli Parapat Kabupaten Simalungun  berdasarkan ketinggian tempat yang berbeda. Penelitian dilaksanakan selama 3 bulan terhitung mulai bulan Februari 2016 Sampai April 2016. Populasi penelitian ini adalah keseluruhan  jenis Rotan yang terdapat di hutan penelitian Aek Nauli Parapat Kabupaten Simalungun Sumatera Utara sedangkan sampel dari penelitian ini adalah keseluruhan jenis Rotan  yang  berhasil ditemukan dilokasi penelitian tersebut. Penelitian dilakukan dengan survey eksplorasi yang didasarkan pada perbedaan ketinggian (1200 mdpl, 1400 mdpl, dan 1600 mdpl). Hasil penelitian didapatkan 3 jenis Rotan  yang terdiri dari Calamus rotang, Plectocomia elongata, Calamus caesius. Uji kadar tanin yang dilakukan pada sampel menunjukkan hasil positif (ada) 1 jenis rotan, yaitu Plectocomia elongate dan Calamus caesius, Calamus rotang tidak positif (tidak ada) menghasilkan senyawa tanin. Melalui pengukuran faktor fisika-kimia diperoleh kelembaban tanah rata-rata sebesar 4,9 %, pH tanah berkisar antara 6,5-6,8, suhu tanah 270 C-280 C, kelembaban udara rata-rata 91%, suhu udara minimum 230C, suhu udara maksimum 240 C, intensitas cahaya matahari 46,85 Candela. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with Speech Acts in HitamPutih Program on Trans 7 Television. The data were downloaded from internet on two episodes broadcasted in June 13th&14th, 2013. The utterances contained Speech Acts was identified and analyzed. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The findings show that there were five types of Speech Acts in HitamPutih Talk Show namely: Directive 194 utterances (55.42%), Representative 80 utterances (22.85%), Expressive 21 utterances (6%), Commissive 8 utterances (2.28%) and Declaration 7 utterances (2%). Directive was the type used in the program HitamPutih. There were 194 items or (55.42%) which make it the most dominant type of Speech Acts used by the host, DeddyCorbuzier. This study shows that Directive was existed in HitamPutih Program.   Keywords: Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Speech Acts.

Abstract

This study deals with rhetorical strategies used by governor candidates in the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017. The aims of this study are to (1) describe rhetorical strategies which are used by governor candidates in the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017, (2) analyze the realizations of rhetorical strategies, (3) reason the use of rhetorical strategies. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The source of data was the Jakarta Electoral Debate 2017. The data were collected by using documentary technique. Instrument for collecting the data was the documentary sheet. The results of the study show that the three rhetorical strategies, i.e. Logos, Ethos, Pathos, are found in the debates. The three realizations of rhetorical strategies are also found in the debates. Reasons for using rhetorical strategies are to acclaim, to attack, and to defend.   Keywords: Rhetorical Strategies, Governor Candidates, Jakarta Electoral Debate

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to conduct the formation in Pantun of Langkat Malay traditional wedding ceremony by using Sibarani’s theory. Formation itself is text, co-text, and context which aimed to know the purpose of an oral tradition. The method used in this paper was descriptive and qualitative. For collecting the data the researcher became an instrument by doing observation and unstructured interview. Analysis technique used which were transcribing, reading, comprehending, investigating, describing, and explaining. The findings of text showed theme in Pantun that uttered by telangkai contained gratitude, honor, tradition, persuasion, joke, hoping a kindness, signifying a peace, welcoming guest, enthusiastic, teasing which briefly supported by co-text and context. Co-text described paralinguistic, kinetic, proxemic, and material elements. Some context applied as follow; cultural context, social context, context of situation, and cultural context.Keywords: Text, Co-text, Context, Pantun, Langkat Malay Traditional Wedding Ceremony

Abstract

This study aimed to obtain a factual description of teacher’s readiness in the implementation of authentic assessment for attitude domain in elementary schools Tebingtinggi. The problems of this study were the lack of socialization and training provided to the teacher, the teachers were still not optimal in the process of implementing the assessment was still considered very difficult. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research. The fourth grade teachers at 3 different elementary schools, SD Negeri 163080, SD Negeri 163084 and SD Swasta Inti Nusantara Tebing Tinggi. Data collection techniques used in this research were observation, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis from interviews, observation and documentation showed that the readiness of teachers authentic assessment for attitude domain implementation was still not ready.

Abstract

Abstract: This study portrayed a profile of exemplary EYL teachers’ competence indicators of pedagogical and professional implementation and personal and social manifestation. The research involved seven subjects. The data were collected through interviews, observations, field-notes and documentary studies and they were analyzed by a snowballing procedure. The study found out that the subjects performed professional competences which classified them as exemplary EYL teachers at the elementary school. The findings also revealed that professional development along with personal and social competences contributed much to the teachers’ pedagogical competences. Key Words: competence, teacher’s competences, english for young learners (EYL), EYL teacher, elementary school Abstrak: Penelitian ini menggambarkan indikator kompetensi contoh profil guru EYL dalam implementasi pedagogis dan profesional dan perwujudan secara pribadi dan sosial. Penelitian ini melibatkan tujuh subjek. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara, observasi, catatan lapangan dan studi dokumentasi. Data kemudian dianalisis dengan metode snowballing. Studi ini menemukan bahwa subjek melakukan kompetensi profesional yang diklasifikasikan sebagai guru EYL di sekolah dasar yang perlu dicontoh. Temuan juga mengungkapkan bahwa pengembangan profesional bersama dengan kompetensi pribadi dan sosial menyumbang banyak untuk kompetensi pedagogis guru.Kata kunci: kompetensi, kompetensi guru, bahasa Inggris untuk pemula (EYL), guru EYL, SD

Abstract

There were many studies discussed on the product of translation. Meanwhile, few researcher lazy to watch the process of translation. This paper, therefore, investigated a study on the processes when a translator performed the translation. The cognitive process played an important role in it. The aims of the study are to describe the think aloud protocols as one of the assessment to explore the translation behaviours or strategies in translation and to analyze cognitive processes that occur in the mind of postgraduate students when they did the translation. This research is also necessary to know the difficulties faced by the students when conducting the process of it. The study that involved fifteen participants, resulted to some difficulties, namely in translating lingual word unit, lingual phrase unit, and lingual clause unit. The overcome strategies were refers to a dictionary, knowledge of the subject (guessing), and the attention of local context and content. It is suggested that, although the think-aloud assessment has limitations, but it is an appropriate instrument for looking into the mental process of a translator.

Abstract

This study addresses types of illocutionary acts in Jack Ma’s inspiring speech in his graduation at the University of Hongkong. The meaning or the function of an utterance in speech-acts can merely be analyzed based on the acts of illocution made by the speaker. In other words, the hearer will be able to give any responses to the utterances made by the speaker if he or she understands the intention of speaker’s utterances. The research is categorized as descriptive qualitative based on Moleong’s theory (2014:82). It aimed to find the types of illocutionary act performed by Jack Ma’s speech in his graduation at the University of Hongkong, to describe the intended forces of each type of illocutionary act performed in that speech, and to find out the context supported interpretation of meaning in illocutionary acts. The findings indicates that there are 7 types of illocutionary acts such : 0 (0%) for declarative, 58 (62 %) for assertive, 11 (12 %) for expressive, 3 (3 %) for directive, 11 (12 %) for commissive, 4 (4 %) for assertive expressive and 7 (7 %) for assertive directive. It means that most of dominant of illocutionary acts is assertive. And context supported the interpreting of meaning performed illocutionary acts can be mentioned through the participants, the setting or social context of interaction, the topic, and the function. All these explanations guided the audience to catch the truly meaning of a speaker.
