Abstract

This is an attempt to discover the effect of applying the Group Investigation Technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive texts. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the second (VIII) grade students of SMPS Dharma Patra Pangkalan Berandan. There were one- hundred and ninety students involved as the population. Which consists of five parallel classes, two classes out of five classes was chosen as the sample by using lottery technique namely experimental and control group. The result was class VIII-A consisted of 15 students became the experimental group and class VIII-B consisted of 15 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Group Investigation Technique while the control group was taught by do not using the treatment. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that the value of t-observed (5,85) is higher than the value of t-table (2.048) ( α = 0.05 ) with the degree of freedom (df) = 28. It means that there is a significant effect of applying Group Investigation Technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive texts. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop media in Teaching Writing Descriptive Text for grade VII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, analyzing data, designing media, validating by the experts, revising and final products. The subject of the study was grade VII of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 35 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result prove that the students need English media in teaching writing which can motivate the students to understand about the descriptive text. The product has been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the percentage was 93,6%. The product was categorized as “Excellent” media in teaching writing descriptive text. The result of the products was presentation that contain in audio-visual media to be used in mastering the descriptive text writing. Keywords : Prezi, Descriptive Text, Research and Development (R & D).

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of Think Pair Share technique on Grade VIII students’ reading comprehension. It was an experimental research. The population of this study were the students of SMP Negeri 5 Medan, which consisted of 60 students. The research is divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was reading comprehension test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied SPSS 17. From the result, it can be concluded that the experimental group’ score in posttest (M=54.33, SE=1.511). The paired sample correlation shows that the correlation is 0. 662. It means that it had strong correlation between pre-test and posttest in the experimental group. The calculation on effect size should be performed to find out how successful the treatment and how significant the improvement was and the findings indicated that using Think Pair Share significantly affected the students’ reading comprehension. So, English teachers were suggested to apply Think Pair Share in order to improve students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the errors usage on students’ procedure writing. It was conducted by using qualitative descriptive. The subject of this research was eighth (VIII) grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Jorlanghataran. The number of subjects was taken from two classes. It is VIII-8 and VIII-9 which consist of 60 students. The instrument for collecting data was writing procedure text. The result of the study showed that there are so many errors found on students’ procedure writing. The analysis showed that the most common type of errors made by the students is omission (45,2%). From the data analysis was found that the main causes of errors is Intralingual transfer (59,6%).

Abstract

TEACHERS’ ELICTATION TECHNIQUES IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM INTERACTION AT SMK NEGERI 13 MEDAN *Khairiana Fitri **Neni Afrida Sari Harahap **Johannes Jefria Gultom Abstract This research was dealt with elicitation techniques used by the teacher in English Classroom Interaction. The objectives of this study were (1) to identify the subcategory of elicitation techniques used by the teacher in English classroom interaction at SMKN 13 Medan (2) to find out the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques in English classroom interaction at SMKN 13 Medan. A descriptive qualitative design was used in this study. The data were collected by recording the utterances of teacher. The data were analyzed by data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing/verification. (1) There were 259 elicitations used by the teacher in the classroom interaction. The subcategories that have been found in teacher utterances are elicitation for information, elicitation for confirmation, elicitation for agreement, elicitation for commitment, elicitation for repetition, and elicitation for clarification. (2) For the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques. There were six reasons, they were lack of skill and knowledge of teacher, lack confidence of students in class participation, passive recipient of information, reluctant students, large class size, and low level of learners. Meanwhile, the short duration of class and late arrival of students in class were not the reasons which affect the use of elicitation techniques. Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the application of MindMapping Strategy improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Thisstudy was a classroom action research. The subject of this study was class VIII SMPSwasta HKBP Pardamean which consisted of 30 students. The study was conductedin two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of threemeetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (writing test) andqualitative data (observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet). Based on writing scores,students’ score kept improving in every evaluation and based on the observationsheet, and questionnaire sheet it was found that teaching and learning process ranwell. Students could enlarge their thinking process. The result of this study showedthat Mind Mapping Strategy improved the students’ achievement in writingdescriptive text.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the effect of applying Semantic Mapping Strategy on students’ speaking achievement. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the eight (VIII) grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sei Suka. The samples of the research were two classes which consisted of experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. Thirty one students were taken as the samples in each class. The experimental group was taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy, while the control group was taught without using Semantic Mapping Strategy. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of tobserved was 3,12 with the degree of freedom (df)=60 at the level of significance p(0,05) = 2,000. It means that tobserved was higher than t-table (3,12>2,000). The result of this study showed that Semantic Mapping Strategy was significantly affect on students’ speaking achievement.

Abstract

The study deals with teacher questions during teaching learning process in SMK Tunas Jaya Tanah Jawa. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of questions used classification of questions based on Richards and Lockhart, and to reveal the reasons of questions that English teacher asked in the classroom used Richards and Lockhart’s reasons why teacher asked questions. The design of the research was a descriptive-qualitative research. The data were the transcriptions of teaching learning process collected by recording the observation and interview. The result showed that teacher asked three types of questions; convergent questions, procedural questions and divergent questions. The reasons why teacher asked questions were (a) to check students’ understanding, (b) to encourage students to think and focus on the lesson, (c) to encourage students’ participation in a lesson, (d) to clarify what student has said, (e) to elicit particular structures and vocabulary items, and (f) to stimulate and maintain students’ interest. It could be concluded that teacher asked many questions during teaching learning process and it could be a good technique for classroom interactions but it would make students bored, if teacher didn’t prepare well all the questions. Teacher should be aware of asking question for the students to consider the question type, and the reasons why the question should be asked

Abstract

This study is an attempt to discover the effect of using video on students’achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimentalresearch design. The Population of this research was the tenth (X) grade studentsof SMAN 2 Pematangsiantar which consists of eleven parallel classes with thetotal number of students is 389. The samples of this research were taken byrandom sampling through lottery technique. The result was class X PMIA 2consisted of 30 students became the experimental group and class X PMIA 7consisted of 30 students became the control group. The experimental group wastaught by using Video while the control group was taught without using Video.The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed byusing t-test formula. The result shows that the value of t-observed (5.078) ishigher than the value of t-table (2.000) (α = 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df)= 58. It means that there is a significant effect of using Video on students’achievement in writing descriptive text. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) isaccepted.

Abstract

The aim of this study were to find out category shift types used in the translation of novel To Kill A Bird and to describe of how category shift is translated in the novel from English into Indonesian. This study were conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were words, phrases, and clauses in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird which is translated into Indonesian by Femmy Syahrianni. It was found that there were 280 data in the novel from English into Indonesian. The data analysis were taken by listing and bolding. Documentary sheets used as the instrument to collect the data. The data were analyzed based on Miles and Huberman (2014) by condensation which consists of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting and transforming and then data display by using table in order to get easy analyzing the data. The result of this study were (1) there were four types of category shifts found in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird namely; structure shifts (36.78%), class shift (27.14%), unit shift (32.5%) and intra-system shift (3.27%). (2) The process of category shifts in the translation novel by having modifier-head in source language changed into head-modifier in target language, adverb in source language changed into verb in target language, one unit in source language changed into some units in target language. and plural in source language changed into singular in target language.
