Abstract

This study deals with the way to improve students’ achievement in speaking particularly through Two Stay Two Stray Strategy. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of of the research was class X-AP SMK Swasta Harapan Danau Sijabut in Asahan Regency that consisted of 34 students. The research was conducted in two cycles consisted of three meetings in each cycle. The instruments of collecting data for quantitative data used Speaking Test and instrument for analysis of qualitative data used observation, interview and questionnaire sheet. Based on the speaking test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the test I the mean was 61,47, in the test II the mean was 67,41 and the test III the mean was 78,52. Based on observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching learning process run well and lively. Students were active and interest in speaking. The using of Two Stay Two Stray Strategy is significantly improved students’ achievement in speaking.

Abstract

The aim of this study are: 1) to design interactive learning media for writing skill by using Macromedia Flash 8, and 2) to investigate the eligibility product of interactive for writing skill by using Macromedia Flash 8. Research and development is used as the research method. This research took place at MAN 2 Model Medan. The product has validated by expert validations (material and media). The instrument for collecting data by using questionnaires with Likert scale 1-4. The data was analyzed based on expert validation to revise the product. The result shows that: 1) the material in interactive learning media for writing skill with the average 3.9 (Very eligible, no need revision), and 2) the interactive learning media is eligible, no need revision with average 3.2. Therefore, the product of interactive learning media is appropriate to use as interactive learning media in teaching learning English process.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT FOR GRADE X STUDENTS OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING STUDY PROGRAM AT SMK SWASTA CERDAS BANGSA *SARMEN DAMANIK ** Prof. Dr. Sumarsih, M.Pd ABSTRACT Damanik, Sarmen. Registration Number: 2132121048. Developing English Reading Materials in Descriptive Text for Tenth Grade Students of SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa. A Thesis. English Educational Program, State University of Medan, 2020. This study deals with the reading materials development for the first grade students at SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa. The research conducted by Research and Development (R & D). It was developed through six stages; 1) Gathering the data & information, 2) Analyzing the data, 3) Designing a new reading materials, 4) Validating by experts, 5) Revising a new reading materials and 6) Final product. It was conducted at SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa, the subject of this research was X grade students of Automotive Engineering Study program. The objectives of this study are to investigate the students’ need and to develop the appropriate reading materials for the students. The technique for collecting the data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 students. The interview was as qualitative data while the questionnaire was a quantitative data.The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which is contained the appropriate knowledge or topic with the Automotive Engineering Study program. The developed materials are descriptive text. The three topics of descriptive text have been developed, the topics are about Valentino Rossi, Motorcycle History Museum, and Sillicone Valley. The development of reading materials in descriptive texts are based on Hutchinson and Waters theory through 4 stages, such as; defining objectives, creating the framework, designing the model of reading materials and refining the model of reading materials. The new reading materials are validated by two experts, they are English lecturer and and English teacher. The average scores of validation are 4.3 from English lecturer and 4.2 from English teacher. It can be concluded that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for tenth grade students of Automotive Engineering Study program Program. Abstract

This study was carried out to discover students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text by using video. It was a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject was students of Grade X, State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 5 Binjai, which consisted of 42 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments used to collect the data were speaking tests as quantitative data and Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes as qualitative data. The results of the speaking tests showed that the students’ score improved in every test. The mean of the students’ score in Orientation test was 51.17, the mean of the students’ score in Cycle I was 69.05, and the mean in Cycle II was 80.31. The mean score in Cycle II was the highest, so it can be said that the students’ speaking competence improved from 51.17 to 80.31. Based on the Observation Sheet, Interview, Questionnaire, and Diary Notes, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. The findings of the study indicate that using Video significantly improved the students’ speaking competence. So, English teachers are suggested to use Video in order to improve the students’ speaking competence in reporting a procedure text.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the lexical density and grammatical intricacy of English reading texts in the textbook for the 1st grade of junior hih school to measure the difficulty of the text. The objectives of the study are to find out the lexical density and grammtical intricacy which formed in the reading texts of English in Focus Textbookwhich has the highest both of lexical density and grammatical intricacy. This study was conducted by descriptive method with qualitative research. The data of this research were the English reading texts of English in Focus Textbook for First Junior High School. The data were text analyzed by using Halliday’s theory. The result of this study; 1).Lexical density formed of the texts was high based on Halliday’s theory that the texts had more lexical item than grammatical item, Text 1 was 57.31%, Text 2 was 70.83%, Text 3 was 68.75%, Text 4 was 61.36%, Text 5 was 58.82%, Text 6 was 60.86%, Text 7 was 69.23%, Text 8 was 71.42%. Grammatical Intricacy formed of the texts was high based on Halliday’s theory that the texts had more complex clauses than simple clause, Text 1 was 7, Text 2 was 4, Text 3 was 2.16, Text 4 was 2, Text 5 was 1.08, Text 6 was 1.75, Text 7 was 2, Text 8 was 2. 2).Lexical density influences the difficulty of reading texts if it has higher proportion of lexical items than grammatical items. While grammaticcal intricacy also influences the difficulty of reading texts if it has higher proportion of complex clauses in comparison with simple clauses. 3).The length of the sentence did not influence the grammatical intricacy of the texts but the more complex clauses and content carrying lexical items could make the reader difficult to process the texts.

Abstract

The study was aimed to see whether teachers’ experiences are reflected in teaching descriptive text to grade VIII students of SMPN 2 Medan or not. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method through a collection of techniques used to specify, delineate, or describe naturally occurring phenomena without experimental manipulation. The data were gathered by administering interview to three English teachers with different years of experience and observing their teaching of descriptive text during a classroom session. The observation and interview result proved that the three English teachers did not reflect their teaching experience when teaching descriptive text to the students. The reason why the three English teach descriptive text in the ways they do varied from one to the other.Keywords: Experience, Descriptive Text, Qualitative Descriptive Research

Abstract

This study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement in writing explanation text through Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Method. This study try to find out to what extent using NHT could improve students in writing explanation text. Subject of the study this research, first grade students of SMA NEGERI 1 PEGAGAN HILIR, TIGABARU. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was writing test while the qualitative data were diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) Method. Based on the data analysis, the mean of the students score for the first test 52.26, for the second test 69.68, for the third test 79.24 and the last test 82.12. The conclusion is that the Numbered Heads Together (NHT) method can improve the students in writing Explanation text.

Abstract

This study deals with the lexical density of reading text of English textbook for senior high school. It was aimed to find out lexical density level in the reading text,how is the lexical density distributed across the texts and then why is the lexical density used in the textbook. This study was conducted by using qualitative research.The data of study were the 8 texts that classified by 4 genres in the Bahasa Inggris textbook for grade XI SMAN 2 Tebing Tingi. The data were analyzed by using Eggins (2004) theory. The result of this study: 1) The LD level of text was equal based on Eggins theory. 2) The distribution of lexical density in reading text in Bahasa Inggris textbook as follows: Text 1 entitle “ How to Make Orange Juice” was 0.37. Text 2 entitle “ How to plant Jasmine “ was 0.46. Text 3 entitle “ How to Make Cheese Toast” was 0.37. Text 4 entitle “ How to Make a Pizza” was 0.44. Text 5 entitle “ Earthquakes “ was 0.46. Text 6 entitle “ The Last “ was 0.32. Text 7 entitle "Life and Times of Ki Hajar Dewantara” was 0.38. Text 8 entitle“ Global Warming” was 0.47. 3) Although the reading texts in the bahasa inggris textbook had different genre in each texts but it didn’t influence lexical density of the text because the influencing of the high and low lexical density in the texts were the three points of experiential mode namely action, reconstraction and generalization.

Abstract

This research deals with developing writing materials about descriptive text through facebook group for eight grade junior high school. The research was conducted to examine the initial condition of students before using the descriptive text materials developed through FB and to develop the materials through FB for the teaching descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, developing materials and media, validating by expert, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was eight grade of SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting interview to English Teacher, and distributing questioner to eight grade consist of 26 students to get the students’ need. The interview and questioner result prove that the students need interesting materials about descriptive text and media. The developed writing materials was validated by expert which average score 3,5 show that the writing materials are valid and suitable to use for grade eight SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. The result of the product distributed to the students through Facebook.Key words: Development, Writing Materials, Facebook.

Abstract

This study was conducted to know the effect of applying Peer Review Strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. It was conducted by using experimental research method. This research design was conducted pre-test, post test in experimental and control group. The population of this research was the eight (VIII) grade students of SMP IT IQRA’ Medan. The sample of this research was taken by lottery technique. They were in class VIII-1 by experimental group and the class VIII-2 by control group. The experimental group was taught by using Peer Review Strategy while the control group was given no treatment. The instrument used to collect the data was writing essay test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that the value of t-observed was higher than the value of t-table. (3,55 > 2,05 (a = 0.05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 28. It means that there was a significant effect of applying Peer Review Strategy on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted.
