Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop English reading materials based on the students of Software Engineering needs for the eleventh grade students at SMKN 9 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials, validating, revising (final product). The subject of the study was grade eleventh of SMKN 9 Medan. The data were gathered by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to XI RPL 3 consists of 24 students to get the students’ need. To collect the data of the research, conducting interview to English teacher and two types of questionnaires were used as the instruments. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which are the average scores for the analytical exposition material (4.65 and 4.7) and for the explanation text (4.65 and 4.6) show that the reading materials are valid and suitable to use for the eleventh grade students of software engineering program. Based on the results of the expert judgment, the developed materials were considered appropriate, which was very good.Key words: Development, Reading Materials, Software Engineering.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method in reading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at MTS AMIN DARUSSALAM MEDAN. There were 2 classes chosen as the sample with 32 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group taught by using SQ3R method and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrument used to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test and post test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that t-test was higher than t-table ( 3,93> 2,00 ) at the level of significant 0,05 with degree of freedom (df) 60. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted which shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study attempted to improve students’ achievement in vocabulary by using Realia. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class VII-1 at SMP.N.17 Medan which consisted of 38 students. The research was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instrument for collecting quantitative data was a vocabulary test and the instruments for collecting qualitative data included diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview. Based on the vocabulary test, students’ score kept improving in every test and based on the diary notes, observation sheets, questionnaire sheets, and interview report, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in vocabulary. The result of the research showed that Realia significantly improved students’ achievement in vocabulary. Abstract

This study attempts to discover the effect of applying Personal Experiences Strategy on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA N 6 Padangsidimpuan which consists of 10 parallel classes with the total number of students is 64. The samples of this research were taken by random sampling through lottery technique. The result was class X1 consisted of 32 students became the experimental group and class X2 consisted of 32 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by Personal Experiences Strategy while the control group was taught by using Big group work strategy. The instrument was used to collect the data was writing narrative text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 4.25 with the degree of freedom (df) = 62 at the level significance 0.05. it means that t-observed was higher than t-table (4.25 > 1.997. The result of this study showed that teaching narrative text by using personal experiences strategy was higher than that by big group work.

Abstract

This research aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of electrical engineering study program at SMK Sinar Husni Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product.The subject of this study were students of class X-l2 of electrical engineering study program consisting of 38 students. The instrumentations for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 38 respondents to get the students’needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for electrical engineering study program. Thus, The materials were then developed through Contextual Teaching and Learning approach which implementation by REACT (relating, experiencing, applying, cooperating, and transferring) and developed with their study program and work life situation. The learning materials were developed into 6 units of speaking material. by two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,5 or 90% from English Lecturer and 4,4 or 87,6% from English teacher.It means the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for grade X students of electrical engineering study program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials,Contextual Teaching and Learning, Electrical Engineering Program

Abstract

This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraphthrough simultaneous roundtable strategy. This study was conducted by using classroomaction research. The subject of the research was class VIII-5 SMP N 2 Berastagiconsisting of 30 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and consisted ofseven meetings. The instruments for collecting data were writing tests as thequantitative data and diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet asqualitative data. Based on the writing score, students’ scores kept improving in everytest. In the first cycle test, the mean of writing score was 61,43. In the second cycle testthe mean of writing score was 75,13. Based on diary notes, observation sheet andquestionnaire sheet, it was found that students were actively involved in writingprocess. The result of the research showed that Simultaneous Roundtable Strategy canimprove students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of collocation in English Textbook forGrade X in The Senior High School. The objective of this study was to identify thetypes of collocation which used in the textbook and how it was used in the Englishtextbook. The source of the data was English Textbook for Grade X in The SeniorHigh School from Book of Matters Centre of Ministry of Education. The data werecollected after read whole textbook. The data took from ll genre in reading text. In thetextbook, there were 5 genre of reading text. They were Narrative, Recount,Descriptive, Procedure and News Item. The results of this study were 6 types ofcollocation which used in the etxtbook. They were Adjective and Nouns, Verbs andNouns, Noun + noun, Verbs and expression of preposition, Verbs and adverbs,Adverbs and adjectives. The most dominant type of collocation was Verb and Nounscollocation.

DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS OF PROCEDURE TEXT BASED ON SCHEME BASE APPROACH IN SMK SWASTA ERIA MEDAN *Dayanur ** Sumarsih ABSTRACT Dayanur. Registration Number: 2132121007. Developing English Reading Materials of Procedure Text based on Sheme base Approach in SMK Swasta Eria. A thesis. English Education Study Program, Medan State University, 2021. This study aimed to develop English reading material for students based on scheme base approach in vocational school. The study conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The respondent of this research was 31 students of Office Administration grade XI in SMKS ERIA Medan. The data was consisted of syllabus, lesson plan, and existing reading materials. Based on the data, the existing reading materials were not appropriate for students of office administration department because those were intended for general students. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview to students and English teacher. This aimed to collect the data and information about students‟ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showed the needs of students on English reading materials. Based on the need analysis and material evaluation, the new reading materials were developed by associating to contextual teaching and learning approach, students‟ need and their department. The genre of text was procedure text which told about the manual steps. After designing the product, the experts validated the product. And finally, the English reading materials for office administration students could be used. The developed reading materials were how to use LCD projector in an office meeting, how to print a document, how to use a scanner, how to use a photocopier, and sending a fax. The product had been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the mean score was 3,585 from 4. The product was categorized as “ Very Good and Relevant” reading materials for eleventh grade students of office administration program. Abstract

This study concerns with improving students vocabulary achievement in reading recount text through anagram technique. The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ achievement in vocabulary by applying anagram technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of SMP SWASTA PEMBANGUNAN GALANG totalling to 29 students. They were taught vocabulary by anagram technique. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle I test the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage of orientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%. The finding of the research showed that applying anagram technique significantly improved students’ vocabulary achievement. The qualitative data show that the students were more interested and motivated on vocabulary achievement through anagram. It is suggested that teachers should apply anagram technique as one of methods to improve students’ achievement in vocabulary.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effect of using SWELL Method on Students’ Achievement in Writing Procedure Text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the third grade of SMP NEGERI 2 SELESAI. The total number of the population was one hundred twenty in 4 classes. There were sixty students chosen as the sample using randomly by lottery technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely experimental group and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SWELL Method and control group was taught by using Demonstration Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t-table (2.26>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there is a significant effect of SWELL Method on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.
