Registration Number: 2132121048. Developing English Reading Materials in Descriptive Text for Tenth Grade Students of SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa. A Thesis. English Educational Program, State University of Medan, 2020. This study deals with the reading materials development for the first grade students at SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa. The research conducted by Research and Development (R & D). It was developed through six stages; 1) Gathering the data & information, 2) Analyzing the data, 3) Designing a new reading materials, 4) Validating by experts, 5) Revising a new reading materials and 6) Final product. It was conducted at SMK Swasta Cerdas Bangsa, the subject of this research was X grade students of Automotive Engineering Study program. The objectives of this study are to investigate the students’ need and to develop the appropriate reading materials for the students. The technique for collecting the data were gathered by administering interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 25 students. The interview was as qualitative data while the questionnaire was a quantitative data.The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which is contained the appropriate knowledge or topic with the Automotive Engineering Study program. The developed materials are descriptive text. The three topics of descriptive text have been developed, the topics are about Valentino Rossi, Motorcycle History Museum, and Sillicone Valley. The development of reading materials in descriptive texts are based on Hutchinson and Waters theory through 4 stages, such as; defining objectives, creating the framework, designing the model of reading materials and refining the model of reading materials. The new reading materials are validated by two experts, they are English lecturer and and English teacher. The average scores of validation are 4.3 from English lecturer and 4.2 from English teacher. It can be concluded that the developing materials categorized as relevant or appropriate for tenth grade students of Automotive Engineering Study program Program. A Thesis, English Educational Program, Faculty Language and Arts, State University of Medan, 2021. This study deals with teacher roles used in English classroom management. The objectives of this study were to explain the teacher’s role and analyze how the teacher realize their role in English classroom management. A descriptive qualitative design used in this study. The data collected by observing the teacher’s role in two classes of grade ten and interview the two English teachers at SMA Negeri 11 Medan. The data analyzed based on Marmoah & Denmar theory. The findings of this study showed the first teacher did not apply teacher’s role as a motivator and evaluator. The second teacher applied seven teacher’s roles completely in teaching and learning process. It can be concluded that generally teaching and learning process of English subject in SMA Negeri 11 Medan was achieve the learning objective and have effective learning. In addition, the two teachers applied the roles of teacher as learning resource, facilitator, good manager, demonstrator, and guide while one of them did not apply the role of teacher as motivator, and evaluator. DEVELOPING ENGLISH READING MATERIALS OF PROCEDURE TEXT BASED ON SCHEME BASE APPROACH IN SMK SWASTA ERIA MEDAN *Dayanur ** Sumarsih ABSTRACT Dayanur. Registration Number: 2132121007. Developing English Reading Materials of Procedure Text based on Sheme base Approach in SMK Swasta Eria. A thesis. English Education Study Program, Medan State University, 2021. This study aimed to develop English reading material for students based on scheme base approach in vocational school. The study conducted by using Research and Development (R&D). The respondent of this research was 31 students of Office Administration grade XI in SMKS ERIA Medan. The data was consisted of syllabus, lesson plan, and existing reading materials. Based on the data, the existing reading materials were not appropriate for students of office administration department because those were intended for general students. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview to students and English teacher. This aimed to collect the data and information about students‟ needs and learning needs. The need analysis showed the needs of students on English reading materials. Based on the need analysis and material evaluation, the new reading materials were developed by associating to contextual teaching and learning approach, students‟ need and their department. The genre of text was procedure text which told about the manual steps. After designing the product, the experts validated the product. And finally, the English reading materials for office administration students could be used. The developed reading materials were how to use LCD projector in an office meeting, how to print a document, how to use a scanner, how to use a photocopier, and sending a fax. The product had been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the mean score was 3,585 from 4. The product was categorized as “ Very Good and Relevant” reading materials for eleventh grade students of office administration program. REPETITION OF COLLOCATION IN THE TALK OF THE TENTH GRADE TEACHER IN SMA NEGERI 11 MEDAN *Sarah Cindy Cristin Tobing. **Prof. Dr. Sumarsih, M.Pd. **Dr. Meisuri, M.A. ABSTRACT Tobing, Sarah Cindy Cristin. Repetition of Collocation in The Talk of The Tenth Grade Teacher in SMA Negeri 11 Medan. English Educational Program, Medan State University, 2020. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of collocations that mostly used during the teaching and learing process, the patterns of repetition, and the function of repetition. This research was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative design. The subject of the study was the English teacher of the tenth grade in SMA Negeri 11 Medan. The data were collected by conducting an observation, voice/video recording, and interview. The result of the study showed that lexical collocation oocured dominantly (68%) and followed by the grammatical collocation (32%). Lexical collocation of verb + adverb was the type that mostly occured in teacher talk (TT). The teacher also tended to use the pattern of self-reptition to repeat the collocation in the class. Aside from assisting the students to catch meanings, another reason as to why the repetition was implemented in the class was because it helped the teacher to control the class, to give commands to the students, and also to encourage the students. English Education Study Program, Medan State University, 2020. In learning progress, question take an important part, questions as the bridge between student and teachim which is connecting both of them to make the atmosphere in the classroom more active and meaningfull. Question also have been used as a tool to evaluate the student knowledge.Teacher usually use examination to evaluate students skill especially in final examination. This research is focused on the importants of reading skill of higher order thinking skill. The objective of this research is to find empirical evidence of the distribution of thee higher order thinking skill based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy in reading qustions. The researcher used analysis method because the researcher identifies specified characteristics of the material in the examination paper. Furthemore, the data collected are qualitative data because the data are collected in the form of words, which are the reading questions. The reading question in school final examination used as data. The result of distribustion of highim order thinking obtains 10 of 23 reading question with 7 analyze, 3 Evaluate and 0 Create. Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the kinds of figure of speech and discover the existence of figure of speech that is delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive. The data were the utterances gathered from umpasa that are delivered by Hula-hula, boru, and dongan tubu of 3 Toba Batak saur matua ceremonies in Rantau prapat and Tarutung. The data analyzed by using theory of descriptive analysis. from identifying the data that are needed for this research, classifying the data based on the theory of figures of speech and analyzing the data based on the theories that were used. The findings are there were 7 out of 10 kinds of figure of speech were found in the umpasa of Toba Batak saur matua ceremony. The most dominant figure of speech in Toba Batak saur matua ceremony was simile. Toba Batak people tent to deliver umpasa through simile which compared between two dissimilar things by using the comparative term (like, as) and described to the first qualities of the second of invest the first with connotations inherent in the other. Keyword: Figurative Language, Toba Batak, Saur matua ceremony

Abstract

This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objective of this study is to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. Keywords: Language Use, Gender, Talk Show

Abstract

The research deals with translation shift in Garfield takes his licks a bilingual text. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses were translated from English into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) intra system shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class, change in ranks and change in number. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: Structure Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, Intra System Shift.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the pragmatics acquisition of five-years old Indonesian children in casual conversation. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative research were to: (1) find the type of the pragmatics acquired by a five-years-old child, (2) to find out the way of how do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in casual conversation, and (3) to find out the reason of why do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in this way. The data were obtained from three Indonesian boy children who lived in Batakness environment where most of their friends spoke in Batakness language. This study was located at lintongnihuta, Humbang Hasundutan regency. In collecting the data. this study applied documentation with audio visual recorder as the instrument of collecting the data. The technique of data analysis used in this study was descriptive technique, and the data were described trough the process of transcribing the data and reducing the data by the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and transforming the transcripts of the data, after that, displaying the data and at last drawing the conclusions. The finding indicates that the subject of this study had mastered pragmatics, were the types of pragmatics acquired are exchange structures, turn taking, repairs, and cohesion. While the most dominant pragmatics used was turn taking. The way of  five years-old Indonesian children acquire the pragmatics in casual conversation were by united the environment’s effect, culture, habits, mood, and their focus on their own mind, needs, and what they were thinking about. And the dominant affected by focusing to their mind only. Then based on the interview with their parents and other caregivers, it’s found that the reason of using pragmatics in highest frequency were because the children often focused to the things in their mind only.Keywords: Pragmatics, Acquisition, Indonesian Children, Casual Conversation

Abstract

This research deals with the conversational styles by male and female sellers in business transactions at traditional market “Pasar Sentosa Baru” Medan. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The subjects of 8 persons namely 4 male sellers and 4 female sellers were taken which they produced 20 conversations for each genders. The ages ranged from 30 to 60 years old. They come from various sellers, namely fish, chicken, vegetables, fruits, and spice. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, field notes, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The findings show that there were five types of conversational styles used by male and female sellers. In conversational styles used by male sellers; amount of talk (30%), interruption (26.7%), conversational support (21.7%), compliment (16.6%), and tentativeness (5%). In conversational styles used by female sellers; interruption (29%), amount of talk (23%), conversational support (24%), tentativeness (15%), and compliment (9%). In conversational styles in male sellers business transaction, the more dominant responses refer to talk of amount because they talk much in interaction in public context, while for female, the more dominant responses refer to interruption because the female sellers are taken as a violation and a sign of conversational dominance.Keywords: Conversational styles, Gender, Traditional Market.
