Abstract

Slang occurs in any language of a region especially when people communicate in informal situations. This study focuses on identifying the types of slang words used by Neel + Jordan on their conversation through a podcast. The data are taken from their podcast on Youtube entitled Australian Culture. This study was done in order to make the viewers of the podcast easier to understand the content. The method conducted is descriptive qualitative. Observation and note-taking techniques are used to collect the data. There are five types of slang as follows: fresh & creative, clipping, flippant, acronym, and imitative based on the theory used from Allan & Burridge (2006). The writer formed the data using a table and conducted a description afterwards in order to make the analysis clear and the readers easy to understand. The result of the study was that there were five types of slang found in the Neel + Jordan Podcast.

Abstract

This article investigates the Maxim Violation analysis employed by Emily, the main character in the movie. The data was taken from Emily in Paris Season 1 Movie. The goal of this research is to discover different types of maxim violations and figure out what motivates the main character to violate the maxim. The data was gathered using the observation approach, which contained steps such as downloading and observing the data, finding the script, and writing notes for the discussion that showed the violation of the maxim. The data were analyzed using a qualitative methodology. The study was comprehended using theory from Grice's maxim violation theory (1975). The results of the analysis of selected dialogue in the movie indicate that there are 28 data points in the film that include Maxim Violation. Quantity, quality, relevance, and manner can all be characterized as types of maxim violations. The reason that motivates the main character to violate the maxim was discovered in this film, which is supported by the context of the situation that occurs in Emily in Paris season 1 movie.

Abstract

This article aims to find out the types of flouting maxims in the Raya and The Last Dragon movie is. The researcher used the theory that proposed by Grice in his book (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxims in Raya and The Last Dragon movie. The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Through the findings of the analysis, there were 17 data found. Those are: Flouting Maxim of Quantity 6 data (35%), Flouting Maxim of Quality 3 data (17% ) Flouting Maxim of Relevance and Flouting Maxim of Manner rarely appeared with same frequently 4 data (24%). From those forms, Flouting Maxim of Quantity has the highest occurrences used among others.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the types of deixis found in the song lyric “Plastic Heart” by Miley Cyrus from Plastic Heart Album. This research applied for descriptive qualitative method and supported by simple quantitative calculate the percentage of each type of deixis. The observation methods were employed in this research to collect the data. Based on the result can be concluded that three main types of deixis are found in the song lyric, there are 56 data found of person deixis with a percentage of 61%. Next, 31 data found of time deixis with percentage 34% and last there is 4 data found of place deixis with percentage 5%. The most dominant data found in the song lyric is person deixis which refers to the speaker or the singer itself in the song. This research is expected to provide an understanding of deixis and the context that is conveyed by the speaker.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to determine the various types and functions of code switching. Poplack's (1980) theory defines three forms of code switching in evaluating the data: tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching. Moreover, the theory from Appel and Muysken (1987) distinguishes the six functions of code switching are: referential function, directive function, expressive function, phatic function, poetic function, and metalinguistic function. The data source was taken from Bunga Citra Lestari YouTube’s channel entitled Love Story #1 – BCL Sebelum dan Sesudah Ashraf was published on February 12th, 2021. The method that was used to collect the data is the qualitative method. This research found 79 data of code switching.  In analyzing the data, intra-sentential switching is commonly used by the participants in the video which found 50 (63,3%) data. Meanwhile, the metalinguistic function is dominantly used which found 32 (40,50%) data for the functions of code switching utterances by the participants. The result of this analysis because both of the speakers, Daniel Mananta and Bunga Citra Lestari are a bilingual person and they often switch the language into other languages because their society also has an acceptable use of English terms.

Abstract

This study concerned Indonesian – English code-mixing in Titan Tyra’s YouTube channel. This thesis aims (1) To find out the types of code-mixing used by Titan Tyra in YouTube channel. (2) To find out the reasons why she used code-mixing on her YouTube channel. The informal method was used to give clear description about the data collection this study uses the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to analyze the types and the reasons of the code-mixing. The results of this study show that all types and reasons of code-mixing as proposed by Hoffman (1991) were found: the types are Intra-sentential code-mixing, Intra-lexical code-mixing, and involving a change of pronunciation. The reasons of using code-mixing are talking about a particular topic, interjection, repetition used for clarification, being emphatic about something, and expressing group identity.

Abstract

The study focused on identifying the functions of interjections and translation strategies of interjections were found in the subtitle of My Little Pony movie. The data were collected by observation method and analyzed in descriptive qualitative method. The research used two theories, namely the categories of interjections proposed by Ameka (1992) and translation strategies of interjections proposed by Cuenca (2006). It is found that four functions of interjections applied, there are, 26 data of emotive interjection, 2 data of cognitive interjection, 14 data of conative interjection, and 7 data of phatic interjection. Furthermore, there were five translation strategies of interjections found in this research. There were 28 data of literal translation, 3 data of translation by using an interjection with different form but expressing the same meaning, 4 data of translation by an interjection with different meaning, 12 data of omission strategies, and 2 data of addition strategies. Literal translation was the most frequent strategy applied because the translator transferred the message from the source language into target language with the same meaning or expression and did not change the form of interjection.

Abstract

The study concerns on the translation of cultural terms in A Thousand Splendid Suns novel. It aims analyzing the types of cultural terms and translation technique found in A Thousand Splendid Suns novel. This qualitative research was done through a descriptive analysis based on Newmark’s theory and Molina and Albir theory to analyze the data. It was found that there are five categories cultural terms in this data that are social organization which has forty seven (47) data or 48,959%. Then, it followed by the material culture which has thirty two (32) data or 33,333%. The other that is ecological has eleven (11) data or 11,458%. The lowest were social culture which has three (3) data or 3,125% and gestures and habits has three (3) data or 3,125%. It can be concluded that social organization is the highest occurrence of the data the translation of cultural terms found in A Thousand Splendid Suns novel.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze the type of signs and meaning found in pictures related to Covid-19 post by World Health Organization (WHO) in their Instagram account. This study used observation method to collected the data that taken from Instagram Post by World Health Organization, afterward, to analyzing the data this study applied the qualitative method. This study were analyzed using theory of Semiotics by Saussure (1959) in order to find out verbal signs and Barthes (1964) theory of Denotation and Connotation to explain the reality. The data were presenting by using formal and informal method. The data finding of this study showed there are 8 verbal signs in both of data. Those type of signs consist of Connotation and Denotation.

Abstract

The title of this research is “BTS Speech: A Study of Deictic Usage in Deictic Expression”. In this research, the writer focuses on how the speaker uses deictic usage pronouns in speech. The speech BTS delivered at the famous UNICEF campaign in February 2018. The speech was about BTS going to tell young people around the world to love themselves with the #LoveYourself campaign. This study aims to identify and classify the types of analyzing the usage of deictic pronouns in BTS Speech. The data studied according to Levinson's (1983) understanding of the theory there are 2 types of deixis, namely: deictic usage and non-deictic usage. Deictic usage is divided into two, namely: Gestural usage and symbolic usage. The most common use of deixis pronouns is symbolic usage. Deixis can be interpreted as a pointer or pointing. The results of the study will show which utterances use deictic usage pronouns. The research will be presented with a qualitative descriptive research method. This research is expected that readers or students can understand the speaker's utterances by paying attention to the use of the pronoun deixis.
