<![CDATA[Kemampuan dwibahasa saat ini memang sangat menantang yang ditandai dengan tidak banyaknya mahasiswa dan alumni jurusan Sastra Inggris yang berani mengambil pekerjaan sebagai juru bahasa dan sepatutnya kemampuan ini diasah lebih dalam sebab kemampuan ini yang akan membawa para pemelajar jurusan Sastra Inggris merajut profesi menjadi seorang juru bahasa baik itu terikat dalam sebuah institusi maupun sebagai pekerja lepas. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mencukupi kebutuhan serta meningkatkan kompetensi mahasiswa dan alumni Fakultas Bahasa Asing Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar yang juga termasuk kategori masyarakat dalam mengambil peluang berprofesi sebagai juru bahasa. Pelatihan dibagi menjadi 2 gelombang dari pertengahan bulan Maret sampai Mei (8 minggu). Pelatihan dilakukan secara intensif yang diikuti oleh 10 orang termasuk mahasiswa dan alumni dengan menggunakan teknik menyimak/mendengarkan (listening), meniru (shadowing), menguraikan kembali dalam bentuk berbeda (paraphrasing), dan yang terakhir adalah whispering atau menerjemahkan dalam waktu yang bersamaan dengan pembicara bahasa sumber. Keempat teknik ini diklaim mampu meningkatkan kemampuan seorang juru bahasa khususnya kemampuan kognitif. Pelatihan ini didukung oleh Rumah Harapan Disabilitas Graha Nawasena kota Denpasar sebagai tempat pelaksanaan serta 1orang penutur asli dari Inggris sebagai narasumber. Selama kurang lebih 2 bulan kegiatan pelatihan juru bahasa ini dilakukan guna mencari regenerasi para juru bahasa pemula yang selanjutnya akan mandiri mendapatkan jam terbang sendiri sampai ke tahap juru bahasa professional. Peserta yang mengikuti pelatihan ini pun mendapatkan manfaat dari setiap sesi latihan serta merasa terbantu oleh penggunaan teknik-teknik yang sudah dipraktekan bersama.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims i). to find out the representative speech acts used in Queen Elizabeth II’s speech entitled Queen Urges ‘Self-Discipline and Resolve’ In Corona Virus Speech, ii). to analyse the meaning behind the utterance of Queen Elizabeth II’s speech entitled Queen Urges ‘Self-Discipline and Resolve’ In Corona Virus Speech. The analysis of the data uses qualitative method as the study presented descriptively according to theory of speech acts proposed by Searle (1976) to classify the representative speech acts and theory of contextual meaning proposed by Yule (1996) to analyse the meaning behind the utterances. The informal method is applied in presenting the result of the analysis. The result of this study shows that there are 20 of 28 utterances that identified as representative speech acts used in Queen Elizabeth II’s speech which means the speaker used representative the most in her speech.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to find out the behind meaning or messages of the semiotic signs that were found in the four movie posters of Despicable Me. The data of this study is downloaded from https://id.pinterest.com, an online application (that can be downloaded in the play store) that provide services for people to exploring, searching or sharing images. To discover the behind messages of the semiotic signs in the movie posters, this study uses the theory of meaning by Barthes (1977) and the theory of color meaning by Wierzbicka (1996) as a supporting theory. The method used to analyze the data on this research is the qualitative research method. In the end, the result of this study reveals, all the behind messages of the semiotic sign found in the four posters are represent the movie by giving more context about the story, the theme, and the character in the movie.]]>

<![CDATA[The importance of a tour guide competence and professionalism is the rational of this community service program.The focus of this program is to increase the competence of local tour guides in English by being able to design tour itinerary. This activity was done in Tista Village that is located in Kerambitan District, Tabanan Regency, Bali. The purpose of the activity is to help tourism actors especially local tour guides in Tista Village to enhance their English as one of the competency demands. Community Based Research (CBR) approach was implemented that prioritizes community needs and allows space for local wisdom as knowledge and solutions for the community. The service program was carried out using several methods, namely the lecturing method, question and answer method as well as discussion, as well as demonstration and simulation methods. Providing added value for local tour guides, the activities also include designing tour packages and practicing explaining them in English. The application of role play activities creates a more active and attractive learning atmosphere and has succeeded in increasing the participants' self-confidence as local tour guides. Through training activities in the community service program, the participants are able to understand and practice the English language used in explaining tour itinerary and packages.]]>

<![CDATA[The idiomatic expressions is a common phenomenon in language use as a communication tool between humans. The use of idiomatic expressions can be presented in the dialogue and expressed in a literary work, such as in a song. It led the researcher to study further 1) the types of idiomatic expressions and 2) the meanings presented in the idiomatic expressions of 6 songs in "Positions" album by Ariana Grande. The researcher used qualitative research techniques combined with observation methods.Meanwhile, to analyze the data, the researcher used McCarthy & O'Dell's(2010) theory to specify the type of expression and Leech's (1981) theory to describe the meaning presented in the idiomatic expressions. The result discovered 18 data that belong to idiom expressions, with details: fixed statements (14), trinomials (3), and prepositional phrases (1). Each idiom expression has its specific meaning, which aims to enable the audience to understand the true meaning. According to Leech (1981), all the meaning presented in the idiom expressions belongs to thematic meaning.]]>

<![CDATA[This study concern with analyzed the research entitled An Analysis of Directives Speech Act Found in Little Women Movie Script. This research concerned with identifying the directives speech act used by the characters and how often the types of directives speech act occurred and which types are most frequent appeared in the movie script. This research utilized qualitative method, which is the data were achieved by read the movie script attentively. And also, to present the percentages of result in numerical form, the analysis used quantitative method. Four types of directives speech act were discovered in the utterance of the characters in the Little Women movie script as a result of this analysis. Those are: suggest, order, command, request.]]>

<![CDATA[This research aims to give further information about the visual and verbal signs contained in the video advertisement. Advertisement is the way to attract people's attention in promoting or selling the product and service. This study's main focus concerns the verbal sign and visual sign and their meanings that appeared in a video of Hyundai advertisement, which is Positive Energy Challenge. The descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study to convey the hidden meaning found in the verbal and visual signs in the video advertisement. The data were taken from the video of Positive Energy Challenge downloaded from YouTube. The study used the observation method in collecting the data through the note-taking technique. Regarding the analysis, there are two main theories used in this study. The first theory of semiotics by Ferdinand de Saussure (1983) is to find out the verbal sign and visual signs. The second is the theory of meaning by Barthes (1968) to analyze the meaning of the verbal sign and visual sign and supported by the theory of color terms proposed by Wierzbicka (1996). The result of the study shows that 5 verbal signs and 4 visual signs contained in the video advertisement have a positive meaning and can attract the attention of audiences.]]>

<![CDATA[There are two objectives of the study the first one is to identify the main character development in the “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie. the second is to analyze characterization of the main character in “Bohemian Rhapsody” movie. The data of this study were taken from the movie entitled Bohemian Rhapsody. The data source in this study was take from the movie in the movie was analyzed descriptively based on the theory How To Analize Fiction proposed by William Kenney (1956). The main character development was analyzed into two categorizes which is simple(flat) character and complex(round) characters. The characterization of the main character was analyzed into three categorize which is physiological, sociological, and psychological dimension of the main characterization. The characterization of Freddie Mercury over all is that he is a kind person, humble, gentle and romantic person but in the middle of the story he changed into a bad person, ego and unfriendly person which make him a complex(round) character.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aims to explain the contextual meaning found in the lyrics of Michael Buble using the theory of Lyons (1995) and to explain the context of the situation to support the analysis of meaning in the lyrics of Michael Buble using the theory by Halliday and Hasan (1985). This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The result showed there are four contextual meanings found; these contextual meanings grouped in 2 or (50%) words, 1 or (25%) phrases, and 1 or (25%) clauses. The e contextual meaning consists of informal language and figurative language, which is analyzed based on the context of the situation, showing that the field or the topic of each song is about love between young adults, Michael Buble, and her story about love and her child. The tenor of the participant of each song has similarities using figurative language, idioms, and informal language. The mode of each song is the same in that all of them are written text but can be read if those songs are sung.]]>

<![CDATA[Metaphor provides emotions as an important role in literary works. Especially for personal emotional experiences in a modern song lyric. This research highlights the use of concrete-to-abstract metaphor to represent emotional experiences in a song lyric. While most previous studies only focus on classifying the types of metaphor. This study fills the void by analyzing how concrete-to-abstract metaphors are used in a modern song lyric to express personal emotion. This study aims to learn deep understanding about figurative language by analyzing the concrete-to-abstract metaphors that are found in Ariana Grande song lyrics. This study used descriptive-qualitative methods to analyze the data based on theory that was used in semantics. The data were collected from three songs in Ariana Grande’s album entitled Eternal Sunshine. Data analysis utilized Knickerbocker and Renninger (1963) figurative language theory for the metaphor analysis and Stephen Ullman (1964) for the metaphor types analysis. The study shows lyrics using concrete-to-abstract metaphor. In addition, these findings can expand the understanding of the song writer’s characteristics. It is hoped that this study can be referenced in the study of music, language, literature, and enrich further understanding and appreciation about figurative language and metaphor in various modern music.]]>
