Abstract

Kampus Merdeka is a policy initiated by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture that allows students to develop interdisciplinary skills, one of which is through the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program. In this final report, the author collaborated with Luar Kotak Audiovisual to develop an independent project in the form of a fictional film script titled RERANTING SENJA. This final project discusses the process of creating a fictional film script entitled Reranting Senja, which highlights themes of self-recovery after loss, emotional pressure, and identity exploration. The story centers on the main character, Raka, a photographer experiencing an existential crisis following the death of his father and the emotional strain in his relationship with his partner, Laras. The project adopts the Eight-Sequence Structure (Elizabeth Lutters) as the narrative framework. This structure is used to shape the emotional transitions of the character gradually and dynamically, from the initial set-up, internal conflict, to a resolution that touches both psychological and spiritual aspects. The creative process began with the exploration of themes such as grief and relational tension, which were visualized through elements like photography, silent spaces, and symbols of familial memory. The scriptwriting adopts a character-driven approach, where the narrative development is shaped by the protagonist’s internal conflicts. Elements such as reflective dialogues, still visuals, and dramatic rhythm are used to deepen the atmosphere and evoke emotional responses from the audience. The final result is a fictional script with a duration of approximately 90 minutes, consisting of 28 major scenes that represent the transformative chapters of Raka’s journey. Through Reranting Senja, the author attempts to portray that healing is not about returning to who we once were, but about becoming someone new. This work aims to reflect on mental health issues and the importance of healthy relationships in one’s life, while also contributing to the development of more psychologically and emotionally nuanced screenplay writing.

Abstract

This research explores the construction of elderly character identities in the short film "Sepi di Ujung Hari." Using Carl Plantinga’s theory, the study examines how cinematographic techniques, storytelling, and direction shape audience perception. Through script analysis, cinematography review, and directorial study, findings reveal that close-up shots, lighting contrast, and framing effectively convey emotions and psychological depth. The narrative structure further strengthens audience empathy by depicting the internal struggles of elderly individuals. Additionally, directorial choices, such as actor direction and blocking, significantly enhance authenticity. This study provides valuable insights for filmmakers in constructing engaging elderly characters and contributes to broader discussions on elderly representation in cinema.

Abstract

This final project report examines the application of the Humanist Direction directing approach in the creation of a short drama film entitled Kala Mentari Berlalu. Kala Mentari Berlalu is inspired by the growing phenomenon of land selling among Balinese communities, which affects not only economic conditions but also cultural values, identity, and emotional attachment to ancestral land. The creative process follows three main stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. The results indicate that the Humanist Direction approach effectively conveys inner character conflicts without excessive dramatization, while clearly delivering a social message about land as cultural heritage, living space, and identity. This film is expected to function as both a reflective medium for audiences and an academic reference for humanist-based film directing practices.

Abstract

The internship program is part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative, which aims to connect academic learning with professional industry practice. The author completed an internship at PT. Boklaa Bali Film, a company engaged in film production and creative media content. The internship focused on the role of the art department in the production of the fictional short film Dara Dalam Belenggu. The internship activities were carried out through observation, interviews, active participation, and direct documentation during the pre-production, production, and post-production stages. Through this process, the author gained knowledge regarding the workflow and responsibilities of the art department, as well as strategies for addressing visual and technical challenges in the field. These challenges included adapting set designs to the narrative concept, selecting appropriate props, and managing color schemes and visual textures to support the emotional atmosphere of each scene. The application of semiotic elements also contributed to strengthening the storytelling and visual meaning of the film. In addition, the internship provided skill development in creating set design sketches, arranging spatial layouts, and collaborating with other departments such as cinematography, lighting, and costume. From a technological perspective, the author learned to use design and visualization software, including SketchUp and Coohom, to support artistic planning and set design development in accordance with the film’s narrative needs. The internship process was analyzed using a descriptive approach to examine the relationship between theoretical knowledge obtained in academic studies and its application in professional practice. The results of this internship enhanced the author’s technical competencies in production design and increased awareness of the importance of interdepartmental collaboration in film production, contributing to better preparation for entering the creative industry.

Abstract

The short film Kala Mentari Berlalu addresses the issue of the sale of rice field land in Bali through a child’s perspective, employing a slow-burn cinematographic approach. This research/creative project aims to analyze the role of the Director of Photography in shaping visual rhythm, emotional resonance, and the transformation of visual style from realism to surrealism. The method applied is practice-based research, encompassing stages of conceptualization, visual design, production, and evaluation. The results indicate that the slow-burn approach is effective in gradually building the audience’s emotional engagement through long shot durations, minimalist camera movement, and subtle lighting. This film is expected to contribute to the development of fictional film cinematography practices with a reflective approach.

Abstract

The NGOPI (Ngobrolin Orang Penuh Inspirasi) variety show is designed as an entertainment and educational program produced and broadcast via live streaming on the YouTube channel "Pande Argy". This research is a creation study (practice) using a descriptive-qualitative approach through production documentation, field observations, and post-broadcast evaluation. The production process includes pre-production (production book, rundown, PPM), production (live multicam), and post-production (evaluation & archiving). The results indicate success in building a warm and communicative segment format, but faced technical obstacles such as delayed broadcast starts and audio problems that affected the initial quality of the broadcast. Practical recommendations include increasing technical preparation time, strict audio checking protocols, and adding a short rehearsal before broadcast. This work contributes in the form of a practical guide for live streaming variety show production and learning materials for the development of similar programs.

Abstract

Film is an audio-visual medium that possesses the power to convey meaning through moving images; however, strictly relying on verbal dialogue or verbalism remains a common issue in practice. The creation of the short fiction film Dara dalam Belenggu addresses the psychological issue of body anxiety in adolescents, demanding a specific visual approach to depict internal conflict without explicit verbal explanation. This article discusses the application of Cinematic Language by the cinematographer as a narrative solution to visualize the isolation and mental pressure experienced by the protagonist, Anari. The creation method focuses on Shot Design utilizing Negative Space and the application of lighting with a Progressive Contrast Ratio. The results demonstrate that the use of tight, restrictive framing (claustrophobic) and the shift in light contrast ratio from flat to high contrast successfully represent the emotional escalation and the character's feeling of being "shackled" symbolically. Through this approach, visual elements effectively function as the primary storyteller, building the atmosphere and character emotion..

Abstract

The short film Tak Kembali Lagi is a fictional drama-romance work that explores the dynamics of a relationship breakdown through a non-verbal emotional approach. This work is based on the idea that conflicts in relationships do not always emerge through explicit verbal confrontation, but rather develop gradually through silence, emotional distance, and routines that lose their meaning. Therefore, cinematography is positioned as the primary visual language in conveying the characters’ inner states and relational dynamics. This article examines the creative process of Tak Kembali Lagi with a focus on the role of the Director of Photography (DOP) in designing and implementing visual aesthetics that support emotional storytelling. A realist approach is employed as the aesthetic foundation through the application of cinematographic techniques such as long takes, natural lighting, negative space composition, and frame-in-frame. The creation method consists of concept exploration, pre-production, production, and post-production stages. The results indicate that cinematography plays a significant role in communicating non-verbal emotions and enhancing the audience’s emotional experience without reliance on dialogue.
