Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether teaching speaking by using Think Pair Share technique improved students’ speaking skill. This research was conducted at the second grade students of SMP Negeri 14 Banda Aceh. The design of this study was quantitative research. In speaking class, the common problem faced by the students is difficulty in expressing ideas. Through this technique students enter the stage of thinking, pairing, and sharing process. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. The instrument of this study was oral test. The result of the test showed that by using speaking assessment which is proposed by Brown (2004). The result of the test was analyzed by using t-test. The calculation result showed that t-score was higher than t-table (3.66 1.68). The result of this study revealed that there was improvement on students’ speaking after taught by using think pair share technique which the mean score of experimental class is 86.4 while the mean score of control class is 72.1. By implementing Think Pair Share, the students are motivated to do the speaking activity during this technique. This method is assumed to give the students an opportunity to practice the target language. It keeps students more active in cooperation and makes them more confident in the class.

Abstract

The objective of this qualitative study was to find out students’ perceptions toward teacher’s way in reading comprehension. The subjects of this study were 28 second grade students chosen by using purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by conducting interview and distributing questionnaire which were designed based on Likert Scale. The data of questionnaire were analyzed by using formula suggested by Sudijono (2010). The result of this study showed that most students gave positive response toward teacher’s way in teaching and learning reading comprehension process. There were only 6 students who have negative response that teacher’s ways in teaching reading comprehension which can not help, motivate and attract them in learning many reasons namely; they did not get explanation before the class begins, they did not aware of class properly and they were not excited in learning English. The classroom circumstances were not good that can make them not focus to study appropriately. Briefly, the teacher’s ways in teaching process can help, motivate, and attract them in learning English particularly the materials given related to their daily life and simple ways and detailed explanation that can ease the students grasping the lesson properly.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating empirical data on the role of the English teachers in guiding the students to win the English competition in the form of qualitative study. The study was carried out at SMPN 19 Percontohan Banda Aceh in February 2016. The objective of this study was to identify the roles the English teachers. The roles of the teacher were adapted from Harden and Crosby those roles include information provider, model, facilitator, assessor, planner, and resource material creator. The sources of the data were from informants and classroom observation and the data were collected through observation and interview. In analysing the data, the writer used interactive model analysis including reducing the data, presenting the data, and drawing conclusion.  The results of this study indicate that the roles of the English teacher of Percontohan Junior High School play a big contribution on students’ success in winning the English contest competition. Besides, this school provided extracurricular clubs which help students to improve and increase their skill.

Abstract

In curriculum 2013, students are expected to use English in oral communications related to the skill pictures are frequently use teaching. Descriptive is a text that often use in speaking. Unfortunately, student lack of vocabulary, no ideas, and not enough information to describing something in detail; based on the problems, teachers’ try to solve it in classroom activity. One of them is media picture that used by teacher to attract student’s attention and motivations. This study was descriptive qualitative. To find the data the researcher ask  teachers’ view’ on the impact of media picture in improving students speaking ability; by using interview and recorded.  The researcher found that positive view of teachers’ related to pictures. In addition, pictures are easy to obtain, colorful is better to attract students’ attentions. It was give many contributions in field of education.

Abstract

Reading is considered as one of the most important skills in learning English as a foreign Language. Furthermore, it is important for the students to comprehend the text that they read and aware of the strategies they use in the reading process. Nevertheless, the students may have to deal with the problems when they read in English especially an academic text. In this case, it is necessary to find out about the students’ awareness and discover the use of reading strategies in reading process. This study aimed to reveal the students metacognitive awareness and the metacognitive reading strategies that are frequently used. In this study, quantitative research method was used through the implementation of Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaire by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002).  The questionnaires were distributed to thirty students of a Critical Reading Class in Study Program of English Education, Syiah Kuala University. The results indicated that the students have high awareness of metacognitive reading strategies and use Problem Solving Reading Strategies (PROB) with high frequency.

Abstract

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving and processing information. It means the information is included in speaking, people can get information about something they look for by speaking or communicating. However, learning English as a foreign language in fact is still a problematic thing for Indonesian students. This study was aimed at investigating the teacher’s and students’ efforts in overcoming the speaking problems at SMA Negeri 12 Banda Aceh. The research is intended to find out the speaking problems that the teacher’s and students’ faced through interview and document analysis. In order to investigate the efforts of the teacher and students in overcoming speaking problems in this study, the researcher uses qualitative study. The data were analyzed in accordance with Ali (2000) for the data of interview and Miles and Huberman (1984) for the data of document analysis. From the result of interview shows that there were 5 efforts (taking English course, reading English books, memorizing vocabularies, speaking English, and learning English in school) made by students in solving speaking problems and teacher’s effort was in increasing students vocabularies. Meanwhile, the result of document analysis shows that, the students got low score in speaking.

Abstract

This study was a quantitative research about the implementing of Role, Audience, Format, and Topic (RAFT) strategy used in teaching writing descriptive text. The participant of this study was the students from second grade of Junior High School: SMP 10 which divided into the experimental group and the control group. They were chosen by using simple random sampling. The reason for conducting this study was due to the fact that students’ writing skill was still low. Moreover, the design used in this study was true experiment with pre-test-post-test control group design. The data was collected through pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The findings showed that mean of post-test of experimental class (=62.35) was higher than mean of post-test of control class (=44.3). The result of t-score of experimental class (=9.16) was higher than t-score of control class (=4.87) with the level of significance (=0.05). Hence, it can be concluded that Role, Audience, Format, and Topic (RAFT) can improve the students’ writing skill in descriptive text.

Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the important skills in English that should be mastered by learners as a basic medium to communicate or interact with each other. However, the students often face difficulties in speaking. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to investigate the problems of speaking faced by senior high school students in SMA Negeri 1 Sabang and also to find out the efforts done by the students in overcoming their problems. The subject of this study consists of 30 students selected randomly from all of the second year grade students in SMA Negeri 1 Sabang. The method used is descriptive qualitative which is the data collections are questionnaire and interview. After finding out the result, the writer described the questionnaire’s results in form of graphics, while the interview’s results are described in a narration form. The result of the study shows that all of the students faced the speaking difficulties, but mostly the constraints are different one another. They also have done efforts to cope with the problems.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners at Jasmine Education Center. Those problems were gathered from classroom observation and interviewed the teachers.  In order to investigate the teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners, the researcher used qualitative study to gather the data in this research. The researcher observed the problems found on two English teachers at Jasmine Education Center. The researcher followed the observation guide from Bryne. Additionally, an interview was intended to find out the teachers’ answers in order to know teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners. The interview guide was taken from Kayi The classroom observation showed that the problems found related to class management which were response towards learners and proper environment in teaching and learning process. The answers of the interviews, the researcher found that the teachers’ problems in time prediction in teaching, the way the teacher commented students’ mistakes and lack of ability in analyzing students’ difficulties in learning. In conclusion, the researcher successfully found the problems on the teachers in teaching speaking to young learners in Jasmine Education Center.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate whether the use of stay and stray technique improved students writing skill in recount text. This study was conducted at State Junior High School 13 (SMPN 13) Banda Aceh. The study used pre-experimental of one group pre-test – post-test design. The sample of this study was class VIII-5 with 21 students, which consists of 13 male and 8 female. The research instrument used in this study was the written test. For pre-test, the students were asked to write a recount text with the topic “memorable day” which consists of 70 words. For the post-test, they were asked to write a recount text with the topic “holiday” which consists of 70 words. The data was collected from the pre-test and post-test result. The data was analyzed by using t-test and statistical formula to prove the hypothesis. The result showed that the students’ mean score in writing result of post-test is better than pre-test, which is 81.3 67. Based on the hypothesis, Ha is accepted since t-test is higher than t-value at the level of significant 0.05 (8.75 2.086). It proves that the use of stay and stray can improve the students’ writing skill in recount text.
