International Journal of Research on English Teaching and Applied Linguistics (IJRETAL) provides a forum for disseminating information and views which enables practitioners of and researchers in EAP to keep current with developments in their field and to contribute to its continued updating. IJRETAL publishes articles, book reviews, conference reports, and academic exchanges concerning the linguistic, sociolinguistic, and psycholinguistic description of English as it is used for the purposes of academic study and scholarly exchange. Abstract

Code-mixing or code-switching in English teaching and learning used in EFL classroom, especially to enhance understanding skill in English. Code-mixing and code-switching in teaching process will make language learning more meaningful and effective (Liu, 2008). Most studies of code-mixing and code-switching easily found in oral communication, such as in daily communication or formal situation. A lot of research on code-mixing and code-switching were not mention the specific process of those codes in learning process (Kim, 2006; Marzona, 2009; Saputro, 2013; Siregar and Sumarsih, 2014; Ansar, 2017; Oladosu, 2011; Mustain, 2011; Siskawati, 2021). The other gaps are most of the research sites were in junior high school and senior high school and others from television, newspaper, magazine, television program, etc. Then other different is they used teacher, students and group of society as the sample of research. In this research, lecturer of Department of English Education became sample of the research and university as site of the research. Objective of the research is to find out kind of code-switching uttered by the lecturer in teaching process at Department of English Education and the factors influencing code-switching. Method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of the research are two lecturers of Department of English Education. The instrument consists of documentation of descriptive observation (by joining class group platform) and list of interviews on August 2021. In analyzing the data, the researcher observed the learning process through online platform, recorded the lecturer utterance, transcribed the recording, classified the data into kinds of code-switching used by the lecturer based on Romaine’s theory (1995), then calculated the percentage of each kind of code-switching. The researcher analyzed the factor why the lecturer used code-switching in teaching process based on the recording of interview and draw a conclusion by using Holme’s theory (1992). The result showed there are two types of code-switching used by the lecturer, namely inter-sentential switching (57,5%), intrasentential switching (42,5%), and there was not tag-switching. The data of interview showed the reason of lecturer used code-switching in teaching process because of the participant, setting or social context, topic, and function.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze students’ errors in using simple present tense especially in the use of verb be and verb in writing descriptive text. The writer focuses on one of error classification by Dulay namely misformation. The research methodology was descriptive qualitative method. The informants of this research were the eighth grade students of VIII A which consisted of 32 students in SMP Hang Tuah Manado the technique of analyzing the data was evaluated with error analysis. The data were derived from test instrument which conducted with the following procedures of error analysis. The first procedure was collecting the sample of students to provide the data obtained by giving a test containing of simple present tense (verb be and verb), the second procedure was identifying the error based on the test, the third was describing the error, the fourth was explaining the error and the last evaluating the error. The result of this research indicate that the total errorscommittedly 32 students were 329 out of 655 items with 46.84%. The use of verb be and verb in simple present tense that contains the most error is verb with 169 by47.98%. It is followed by the use verb be with 160 frequency and percentage of error like 45.70%.

Abstract

This research was aimed at reinforcing student’s reading achievement by using the Readers Theater at the eleventh grade of SMAN 13 Bone. The research used the classroom action research with consisted of two cycles. The research was carried during six weeks at beginning on July 14th – August 18th 2020. The subject of this research was one class of the eleventh grades of SMAN 13 Bone. The data analyzes of the research were qualitative and quantitative. The research findings showed in the qualitative data, the students were motivated, confident and felt entertaining in learning reading. On other hand, in the quantitative data, the students mean score improved. The mean score in both Cycle I and Cycle II were 74.75 and 82.38. Therefore, the rate percentage based on the indicator achievement in both Cycle I and Cycle II running to enhance where the result was 37.6% to 78.2%. Both the qualitative and quantitative findings of this research showed there were reinforcing the students’ reading achievement by using the Readers Theater in classroom action research.

Abstract

This research was to find out students’ difficulties in pronouncing vowels, particularly, in singing Maher Zain song entitled “I believe”. In order to achieve the objectives, this research was conducted through qualitative study with case study design. The subject of this research was the eight-grade students of MTs.S NU Batahan in academic year 2021/2022 that consists of 90 students. The subjects were obtained through purposive sampling. The data of students’ difficulties in pronouncing vowels as well as the reason were attained through pronunciation test, interview and observation. Based on the result of observation, interview, and test, it was found that: 1) the difficulties that faced by students in pronouncing vowel are lack of ability in pronouncing diphthongs [iə] [eə][uə][ei][ᴅi][oi] [əu] [ᴅu]. the students often pronounce consonant “r” clearly instead of long vowels [ə:],[ᴅ:] [ɔ:]. They found it difficult to pronoun the word that consist of double consonant.

Abstract

This paper discusses about the use of WhatsApp application as a learning media in teaching writing at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Bone academic year 2020/2021. The study aimed to find out the teacher implementation of using the WhatsApp application in teaching writing at the eleventh grade of SMAN 2 Bone. In addition, also to find students' perceptions in using the WhatsApp application in teaching writing at the eleventh grade of SMAN 2 Bone. This research includes qualitative research with descriptive qualitative. Sampling in this research using purposive sampling technique, where the sampling technique was to took one teacher and ten students. The data was collecting by observation and interview. This research researcher analyzed data by reduction, display and drawing conclusions/verification. The result of the research that the teacher implementation used of WhatsApp application in teaching writing was carried out by utilizing the features of the application, however the use of the WhatsApp application was not optimal because it was recommended for teacher to make learning variations to attract students’ interest in learning. According to students the used of this application can help in collecting assignments easily.

Abstract

Conducting speech contest in the college belongs to learning process in developing language skill. It is a kind of public speaking as realization of communicative competence in teaching and learning process. It conveys the message delivered to the audience. Message must be prepared in written form before it is performed . then the teacher must guide the students in constructing the text in delivering the message. Speech was performed has to fulfill the structure of organization and supplementary components. One of the strategic in delivering good speech is rethorical language. Rethorical languge consist of suppoting language developed in the speech for example hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, repetition, irony, metonymies and rethorical question. This study conducted the the reseach to determine the importance speech in the teaching and learning proses. This study analysed the structure of the text. Moreover this study also revealed the rethorical language of the winner of speech competition held in IAIN Kudus. It was conducted using descriptive qualitative method in which the data anlysis used content anaysis. Based the analysis ,It was found that there were 9 items of rethorical language from the speech text that consist of 5 metaphors and 4 rethorical questions.

Abstract

Reinforcement is any response both in verbal and non verbal which modift students’ behavior in order to give feedback on their behavior either as a support or correction (Uzer Usman, 2005). This study focuses on investigating the kinds of reinforcement employed by English teacher at Junior High School 17 Kota Jambi class VIII. Researcher used qualitative method. The researcher also took 2 teachers who teaching in VIII class of Junior High School 17 Kota Jambi as the subject of the study. Techniques of collecting the data were interview and observation. In supporting the data was the observation of 2 English teachers. The result of research showed that the teachers gave both of verbal and non-verbal reinforcement during teaching English in class, such as Verbal reinforcement: Word reinforcement and Sentence reinforcement. Also Nonverbal reinforcement: gesture, proximity, activity and token/symbol. It also proved that giving kinds of reinforcement create good athmosphere into the class.
