Abstract

The level of reading comprehension questions in the textbook, particularly essay items, is thought to be important because previous research has shown that they can improve students' critical thinking skills in reading and help students learn English. The goal of this study was to look at the level of questions in an English course reading for high school seniors' reading comprehension questions. Anderson's taxonomy, which was used to analyze the level of reading comprehension questions, divides thinking skills into two categories: low order thinking skills (remembering, understanding, and applying) and high order thinking skills (remembering, understanding, and applying) (analyzing, evaluating, creating). The data were gathered and then calculated into percentages and frequencies that corresponded to each level of thinking within the questions. It appears that 77% of questions emphasize low-level questions, while 23% emphasize high-level questions (high order thinking skills). Furthermore, one of the low order thinking skills, comprehension, dominates the questions in the English reading material. As a result, the reading comprehension questions in the Bahasa Inggris English reading material for senior high school grade twelfth are generally classified as low level questions. As a result, teachers must devise questions that elicit students' higher order thinking skills.

Abstract

English teacher applies certain strategies in teaching reading comprehension to achieve the  objective of learning. Covid-19 pandemic has changed the ways of teaching from face to face  to online learning. This study is intended to investigate strategies the teacher used, to know the  problems faced by the teacher in implementing strategies, and to know how the teacher solves  the problems in implementing strategies on teaching reading comprehension during the covid19 pandemic at junior high school. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted at SMP  2 Manyaran, Central Java. The subject is an English teacher. Observation and interview were  applied to collect the data. Miles and Huberman’s interactive model is used to analyze the data.  The results of this research show that the teacher applies five strategies to teach reading  comprehension during the pandemic covid-19 namely, strategy of identifying the purpose in  reading, skimming the text for main ideas, scanning the text for specific information, analyzing  vocabulary, and implementing L-R-D (Listen-Read-Discuss) strategy. The teacher encounters  several problems in implementing the strategies because the students fail to identify the purpose  of the text, face difficulty to skim the text and analyzing vocabulary. To overcome the problems,  the teacher makes several efforts such as giving more exercises and texts and conducting  discussions. The online learning during the covid-19 pandemic challenges the English teacher  to navigate the students to find the sources of learning using the technologies.

Abstract

ESL and EFL students consider writing as challenging in both cognitive and affective aspects. In ideal circumstances, they may suffer from difficulties during the writing process, including anxiety or even tension. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic condition has made the teaching and learning writing more complicated due to limited time and space to meet, to discuss, to collaborate, and to give as well as take feedbacks for their writing. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the types of writing anxiety experienced by EFL students in online Creative Writing class during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia context. The research utilizes a quantitative method, specifically a survey technique. The online survey is administered to 124 participants of English Education Department at the fourth semester. To assess the levels and types of writing anxiety, the Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) established by Cheng (2004) was utilized in this study. The SLWAI was the first reliable instrument for assessing writing anxiety, particularly in a second or foreign language context. The results of this study show that the most common type of participants' writing anxiety is Avoidance Behavior (66.13%) then followed by Cognitive Anxiety (20,97%), and Somatic Anxiety (12.90%) as the minor type. The Avoidance Behavior type includes behavioral components of anxiety, such as the avoidance of writing. In conclusion, students of Avoidance Behavior type with have a normal level of nervousness since they seek to avoid writing situations. This study suggests that school teachers be more prepared to create online writing classroom atmosphere.

Abstract

This research was done because there were some problems in students’ writing, especially in parts of speech mastery. The parts of speech as a basic of grammar seem to be necessary in the process of language learning. If the students understand this, the students may construct sentence easily and the students may understand the differences between the words. Relate to this condition, the researchers wanted to investigate the correlation between parts of speech mastery and writing achievement at 11th students of MAN 4 AGAM in Academic Years 2020/2021. The design of this research was correlation research. The population of this research was all students at XI Grade of MAN 4 AGAM in academic years 2020/2021 which consist of 4 classes. The sample was 39 students taken by purposive sampling technique. The instruments of this research were test and documentation for collecting writing score of the students. To analyze the data, the researchers used the SPSS version 20 for windows. In analyzing the data, the researchers used Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to search and to find the correlation between two variables. The researchers found that the coefficient of correlation between students’ mastery in parts of speech and writing achievement at the 11th students of MAN 4 AGAM was 0,376. The correlation was positive and significant. It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Thus, there was positive correlation between students’ parts of speech mastery and writing achievement at the 11th grade students of MAN 4 AGAM.

The data were collected using self-regulation measurement questionnaires. The questionnaires distributed to the students were adopted from ADPI of (1989) about self-regulation. The number of questionnaires is 28 statements consist of three aspects, namely, cognition, behavior and motivation. Moreover, the indicators consisting of seven aspects to measure, that is to say: 1) Rehearsal Strategy, 2) elaboration Strategy, 3) Self-Testing, 4) Assignment Prepare Organization, 5) Time Management, 6) Schedule Planning, 7) Learning atmosphere. The research was conducted at SMKIT DARUL FIKRI North Bengkulu. The researcher found that the results of this study showed a statistically significant effect of the Flipped Classroom Model on self-regulation learning. The increase in student self-regulation was seen in the post-test average score of the experimental class of 95.03, higher than the post-test average value of the control class of 75.68. This found proof that the flipped classroom model had a significant effect on students' self-regulation learning.

Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, learning has shifted from offline to online, affecting pupils' learning resilience and the complexity of learning obstacles. As a result, the focus of this study is on English students' resilience and the obstacles they experience during distance learning. This study used qualitative methodologies and included 20 English students who were purposefully chosen as participants. They were questioned in accordance with the study's objectives. An interactive model was used to analyse the interview data. The data suggest that in remote learning, students' self-control is lacking. They are under psychological duress. Their physical state was deteriorating, and several of them were experiencing headaches. They are mentally bored and unable to concentrate, and they cannot enjoy learning due to a lack of social interaction. Furthermore, students encounter issues connected to internet signals, budgeting to meet internet demands, and difficulty in locating learning resources during remote learning, all of which are classified as examples of poor technical competence.
