Abstract

Pratiwi, (2020) An Analysis of Using Duolingo in Improving Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of 10th Grade at SMA YADIKA Bandar Lampung SMA YADIKA Bandar Lampung is one of the many schools in Bandar Lampung, researchers found several problems during observation. Some students said that they liked learning English but they found it difficult to express their skills due to lack of vocabulary, and the learning techniques used were still difficult to apply with this phenomenon. Teachers should use a lot of media, but in reality, the teacher only focuses on textbooks and manuals, teachers must be able to make students more eager to learn English and not make students stress when learning English. In this study, researchers used qualitative methods, precisely descriptive qualitative. The purpose of this study was to obtain evidence about how to use the Duolingo application in students' vocabulary mastery. The data source of this research is a video documentation of the learning process. The text is taken from interviews with students and students' opinions by distributing a list of questions. The results showed that the use of Duolingo Application as a Media in mastering the vocabulary of tenth-grade students at SMA YADIKA Bandar Lampung, it can be concluded that Duolingo Application has had a positive influence, this can be seen from the increased motivation, and students' Vocabulary Mastery; and the Duolingo Application has strengths namely Learning Through Technology, Language Courses, Duolingo Application Content, and Free registration and then its weaknesses, there are disadvantages of the Duolingo Application namely the Internet, Translations, and Features. So, it can be concluded that the Duolingo Application directly has a positive effect on tenth graders at Bandar Lampung YADIKA High School in vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Figurative language is a non-literal meaning of sentences or words in order to make attractive languages in written text based on the theory of Aristotle Therefore, this research aims to analyze what kinds of figurative language in Halsey’s selected song which are Colors, The Feeling, Without Me, Haunting, Ghost, Walls Could Talk, and Nightmare. Moreover, the contextual meaning of the selected song’s lyrics is analyzed based on the theory of Halliday. Contextual meaning has three types which are field, tenor, and mode by observing through reading the lyrics from genius.com. The Field and Mode of the songs refer to the culture of the composer lived in, and Tenor is symbol of participation of life objects. The result is in classified and percentage the data. Thus, it concluded and calculated that the seven selected songs of Halsey have 2 items or 13% of allegory, 1 or 6% of conceit, 5 or 31% of hyperbole, 4 or 25% of irony, 2 or 13% of litotes, 8 or 20% of metaphor, 2 or 13% of onomatopoeia, 4 or 25% of personification, 6 or 38% of rhetorical question, 11 or 69% of simile, and 3 or 9% of symbol. The result of this study will be able to give contribution to the readers who are interested in learning and understanding or interpreting those lyrics.

Abstract

There are 3 types of turn taking strategies, namely taking the turn, holding the turn and yielding the turn. The purpose of this study is to answer the turn taking used in the classroom with the teacher and students as the participants. This study uses a qualitative approach that analyzes the results of data captured using a video recorder. After recording the data, we do the transcription of the participant conversation based on the recorder. The transcript is based on the theory from Jefferson. Then, to analyze what type of turn taking used by the participants we used Stenstrom theory. Based on the findings in this study, it was concluded that there were several types of turn taking strategies that were not found due to circumstance and timing which were not suitable for use, including 'metacomment' and 'giving up' strategy. From this research it is found that each individual has an original character that builds a conversation with a unique pattern.

Abstract

This article research is about to see the use of English storybook, to describe how storybook is being read in the learning process. The method used is classroom activity especially in student’s responses. The data collected through observation and interview. The observation is about the learning process between teacher and students in the use of reading storybook on children’s vocabulary mastery and the interview is about the teacher’s point of view about the use of reading storybook on children’s vocabulary mastery. The research used descriptive analysis. The process to analyze the data is by observing the student and teacher learning process in the class when the teacher reading storybook through learning process recording done. There are five aspects used to know the student’s responses in the classroom; academic aspects, aspects of thoughts, skill aspects, attitude aspects, and works of habit. The research findings show that children’s storybook can increase children’s vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to reveal the language need for hotel staffs in developing English skills based on needs analysis. The participants of this study are three males and two females’ senior staffs. The interview as the instrument to get primary data. The result of this study indicates that speaking and listening are the major need of the staffs. The staffs mostly need speaking and listening skill. Speaking is the most frequently used oral communication to communicate with guests. Speaking also the language functions needed were in greeting, offering menu, asking for the customer's needs or orders, confirmation, dealing with billing, apologizing or dealing with complaining, etc. In addition, some problems are found in listening like listening to accents and dialects. The staffs realize that the accent, the dialect, and the intonation of the guests can have a massive impact of their communication. Therefore, listening is also very needed in their work because listening skill is also needed by the staffs since speaking and listening are interrelated skills. Based on the findings, one suggestion was proposed: to prepare a language training program to improve the English language skills of the staff.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the study about language in a society. In learning about the language in society, there is a phenomenon called code mixing. In this study we focus on the reason of doing code mixing. It is to find the reasons of code mixing occur at English Department Universitas Bandar Lampung. This study uses qualitative research design aiming to analyze the reason of using code mixing. The results were gained from observation and interview. Observation is aimed to find out the words uttered to be classified into reasons. The interview goal is to get more information from the students. The result shows that some respondents tend to mix the language because they feel comfortable in doing this. They cannot express some words in Indonesian. To sum up, the code mixing occurs unintentionally and spontaneously
