Abstract

Fishery activities in the North Java sea are dominated by small pelagic fisheries that have an important role in fisheries development in Indonesia. Although the national potential of small pelagic fish has not been optimally utilized, in some areas the water utilization rate has exceeded the sustainable potential. The rate of exploitation is a key parameter in describing the utilization rate of small pelagic fish resources in water. This study aims to know the biological characteristics and rate of exploitation in some species of fish that became the main catch on pelagic fisheries in the waters of North Java. Six species of small pelagic fishes (bigeye scad, rainbow sardine, short mackerel, yellow-striped scad, yellowtail scad, and fringscale sardinella) caught in the waters of Northern Java have been overexploited. In general, the biological characteristics of each fish have shown that most small pelagic fish caught have not reached the size of the first gonad mature. Also, mackerel, tuna, and tembang are categorized as potentially high risk of catching, presumably from the fish size parameter and the number of operated fishing gear.

Abstract

Abstract

Tidal flood has become a serious problem in several coastal areas in Indonesia, particularly in Probolinggo, East Java Province - Indonesia. The study of tidal flood in the coastal area of Probolinggo was conducted by processing and analyzing oceanographical and meteorological data to asses the possibility and to compare its variability between the West and East seasons. Data is used for this study consist of tidal and wind data from Stamet II Perak Surabaya (7 years from 2004 - 2011); rainfall data from BMKG Juanda Surabaya (9 years from 2002 - 2011); and Probolinggo topography data from SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission - http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/). Tidal flood occurrence possibility was determined by comparing the sea level heights with the topography of the study area. the meteorological data were analyzed to compare its variability during West and East seasons. Results show that tidal flood may occur at several points on the coast of Probolinggo while the high tide occurs especially during the spring tide since the sea level was higher (0.73 m) than the topography of the coastal area of Probolinggo (<0.5 m by average). The condition becomes worse during the East season due to the existence of strong wind in the direction that contributes to generating a high wave in the coastal.

Abstract

Abstract

Climate variability affects the properties of marine sediments. One of the sediment properties affected by climate is the grain size. This study is aimed to test the relation between sediment grain size and climate variability using sediment core GM01-2010-TJ22 that was acquired off Muara Gembong, which is part of Citarum river mouth. The samples were acquired in 2010 onboard RV. Geomarin I by Marine Geological Institute (MGI). Grain size analysis was conducted by Mastersizer 2000. The mean grain size is presented in time series for the 2001-2010 period. Then, the grain size sediment sample was correlated statistically with the seasonal (monsoon), annual, and interannual (El Niño/La Niña and Dipole Mode) phenomena. Data verification was conducted using secondary data of sea surface temperature from satellite images near the sediment sampling location and rainfall data in Bekasi. The verification result shows an increase in precipitation rate downriver of Citarum River followed by the decrease of sea surface temperature and larger grain size. The results using statistical test show that change of sediment sample`s grain size in Muara Gembong have significant correlation with Multivariate of ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) Index (MEI), Ocean Niño Index (ONI), Dipole Mode Index (DMI) and Australian Monsoon Index (AUSMI). This result shows that sediment grain size can potentially be used to identify climate variability in Jakarta Bay.

Abstract

The mangroves in Tomini Gulf have been exploited for chiefly conversion of mangrove areas into shrimp cultivation and extraction of mangrove wood for various purposes. In this study, interpretation to available map and satellite images and ground check were conducted to describe intertidal environment conditions and general processes of coastal dynamic. At local scale, physiographic factors were used to classify mangrove sub-habitats. A total of 159 sample points were selected to observe structure of vegetation, and the revised two ways classification of Specht was applied to classify structural classification of vegetation. The criterion of mangrove disturbance was developed to classify disturbance level. Interview and field check were conducted to assess the successfulness of implemented rehabilitation programs. Results indicated that there were obvious changes in mangrove vegetation over much the intertidal environments, and these might influence the future development and regeneration of the mangroves. While most rehabilitation programs were unsuccessful, mangrove exploitations still continued. If a sustainable management plan is not developed, the degradation will continue and spread, and the mangrove will lose its ecological functions.

Abstract

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems have many benefits including protect the coast from strong waves and currents and are important in maintaining the ecological system in these waters as habitat, spawning grounds, shelter and food sources for marine biota such as ascidians, sponge, echinoderms, mollusks, and fish. The diversity of reef fishes on the east coast of Biak Island is one of the important resources used as a source of income or food source by residents who earn a living as fishermen. This study aims to analyze the relationship between coral communities and coral reef fish communities on the east coast of Biak Island, Biak Numfor Regency. Observations were done by diving using SCUBA equipment. Observation of the condition of the coral reefs used the PIT (Point Intercept Transect) method and coral reef fish worked by the UVC (Underwater Visual Census) method. Data analysis was running by the Spearman test analysis. The results showed that changes in coral community cover affect reef fish communities. This study concludes that there is an association between coral communities and coral reef fish communities that have a positive linear relationship.

Abstract

Mangroves have a major role as carbon absorption and stock. However, this potential cannot be maximized, due to the high level of mangrove damage. The research question is the extent of the ability of mangroves to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and store it in the form of biomass. The purpose of this study was to determine the absorption ability and carbon stock of various types of mangove. The research location was chosen in Pejarakan village, Buleleng Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia as a case study. The method used is non-destructive to obtain diameter data at the height of mangrove trees, by collecting garbage and sediment samples manually on the floor of mangrove forests and to motivate the Government and local communities to restore mangrove forests. The results showed that the high density types of Sonneratia alba turned out to have the ability to absorb and store carbon, compared to other mangrove species. The results showed that S. alba is estimated to have the ability to absorb 57.60 tons of CO2 ha-1 which is equivalent to 15.71 tons C ha-1. While the lowest value is the Osbornia octodonta with the lowest density value. S. alba's ability to store carbon is 5.56 tons of CO2 ha-1 or equivalent to 1.52 tons C ha-1. The conclusion is that S. alba has the highest ability to absorb and store carbon.
