Abstract

ABSTRACT Oral health and nutrition problems in children cannot be separated. Both share the same risk factors. The high prevalence of malnutrition and Early childhood caries (ECC) in developing countries, especially in Indonesia, still needs attention. This study aims to analyze the relationship between ECC and the nutritional status of children aged five years in Indonesia based on the 2018 Riskesdas data. The study used a cross-sectional study using secondary data from Riskesdas 2018. A sample of 701 children aged five years was subjected to clinical examinations and questionnaires. ECC as the independent variable and other risk factors; self-reported oral health, gender, mother's education level, father's employment status, family economic status, children's dietary practices, and utilization of health facilities were analyzed against nutritional status based on weight/height categories converted by Z-score. Results showed that the chi-square test showed a significant correlation between ECC, maternal education level, family economic status and dietary practices at risk of children on nutritional status (p-value <0.05). Multinomial logistic regression test proved a significant correlation between ECC and wasting (OR = 1.352, 95% CI: 0.989 – 2.589). ECC is not correlated with obesity. The conclusion is ECC can cause wasting in children. Meanwhile, several risk factors for nutritional problems and dental caries were similar. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p235-256

Abstract

ABSTRACT Ceramics is a dental material used often because of its relatively good strength and aesthetic properties. Ceramics such as zirconia, alumina, and silica have different characteristics and have been synthesized using a bottom-up method separately. Recently, many studies have used chitosan solution to help synthesize nanometer-sized ceramic materials processed using the bottom-up method. This study aims to produce ZrO2-A12O3-SiO2 nanoparticle ceramics, which were synthesized simultaneously using the bottom-up method, and to see the effect of volume concentration of chitosan solution on the resulting ZrO2-A12O3-SiO2 ceramic particles. The composition ratio of ZrO2:Al2O3:SiO2 used is 3:1:1 with a concentration of 0.05M and a total volume of 500ml. The chitosan solution was added with a volume percentage of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively, and was named samples A, B, C, D, and E. The XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) characterization of the five samples showed nano-sized particles, which were 87 nm, 85 nm, 81 nm, 76 ran, and 76 nm. SEM characterization results show that sample A's particle distribution is not very visible; the particle distribution is only seen in samples B, C, D, and E, while the best particle distribution is seen in sample C. This study concludes that the optimal volume concentration of adding chitosan solution to produce nano-sized ZrO2-A12O3-SiO2 ceramics with good particle distribution is 10% by volume percentage. Abstract

ABSTRACT Caries are the most common case in every individual, including children who are still at an early age. Caries in primary teeth can occur in the early period of tooth eruption, which begins with the presence of white spot lesions. Dental caries are known as Early Childhood Caries (ECC) at an early age. ECC is used for caries in primary teeth up to 71 months. Many factors trigger the occurrence of ECC. Early treatment is very important to prevent comprehensive damage. Usually, the operator will face conditions that are not conducive to treatment. Young children generally will behave uncooperatively, have very high mobility, cry, and have difficulty opening their mouths, so it will be difficult for the operator to give treatment. One of the most therapy is dental restoration. The treatment approach will depend on the severity of the case; treatment can be in the form of non-operative therapy, dental restoration, or the last stage extraction if the teeth cannot be maintained. This case report will discuss the treatment of primary tooth cavity lesions without pulp involvement in young children through Interim therapeutic Restoration (ITR) and strategies that need to be implemented to support the success of treatment and prevent the damage from worsening. The result showed that ITR wa successfully performed in young children with cooperative behavior to prevent more extensive tooth decay. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p267-278

Abstract

ABSTRACT The temporomandibular joint is called temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and it can be characterized by pain, limited mouth opening, masticatory disorders, joint sounds (clicking or tapping sound), crepitus, tinnitus, and persistent headache. The causes of temporomandibular joint disorders are multifactorial. The most common occurrences of these disorders are tooth loss, bad habits are bruxism, chewing on one side, and leaning on the chin. This study aimed to determine the relationship between one-sided chewing habits and the incidence of temporomandibular joint disorders in students of the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry, batch 2020. This research was an analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test with 245 research subjects from the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry, batch 2020. This study used a questionnaire in the form of a g-form which was adapted from the AAOP questionnaire and distributed to all students of Jenderal Achmad Yani University Batch 2020. The results of this study found that 168 students (88.89%) have the habit of chewing on one side and the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders with a value of p = 0.021. It can be concluded that in this study, there is a relationship between one-sided chewing habits and symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p279-302

Abstract

ABSTRACT The pH value and salivary flow rate are important factors in maintaining the balance of the oral cavity and affect the health of the teeth and mouth. When we chew foods high in water, fibre, and vitamin C, such as grapes (Vitis vinifera) and strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa), the value of these two elements can change due to stimulation. This study aims to evaluate pH levels and salivary flow rate fluctuation before and after chewing grapes in contrast to strawberries. The research method was a quasi-experimental study; forty-two research participants from Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani students. They were divided into two groups: grape and strawberries. The experiment was divided into two parts: before and after chewing the fruit. The salivary flow rate was assessed through visual screening, and salivary pH was measured using a pH meter. Data were analyzed by t-test (p<0.05). The result shows that the mean pH value and salivary flow rate increased after chewing grapes and strawberries. Compared with before chewing fruit, this increase was statistically different (p=0.000) in the two groups. Meanwhile, when the mean difference was insignificant. Chewing fruit that contains water, fibre, vitamin C, and a sour taste can increase salivary secretion, which follows the buffer system to increase salivary pH. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p303-316

Abstract

ABSTRACT Orthodontic treatment with removable orthodontic appliances requires the patient's commitment to use the appliance in the mouth at a certain time. It can lead to specific changes in the mouth, such as a decrease in the level of acidity or pH of the mouth, which may be associated with increased biofilm accumulation. The acidity level of saliva in the mouth is an important factor in several oral problems, such as dental caries and periodontal disease. The use of mouthwash is still one of the simple ways that are widely used to overcome these problems. Among the many types of mouthwash on the market, sorbitol mouthwash is an option that can be used to prevent changes in the acidity level of saliva from reaching a critical value of < 5.5 and endangering the oral health of orthodontic patients. This study aims to determine the change in salivary pH of patients in orthodontic treatment with removable appliances before and after immersion with sorbitol mouthwash. The research method was an experimental laboratory study conducted with pre-test and post-test designs involving 33 samples divided into three groups, each consisting of 11 samples. Immersion time is divided into three categories, namely 15, 30, and 60 seconds. A pH indicator measures the level of saliva acidity. The results show that there are different changes in pH in each period of immersion. The conclusion was that immersion in sorbitol mouthwash resulted in changes in the pH level of saliva in removable orthodontic appliances, and the sufficient soaking time is 15 seconds. Abstract

ABSTRACT Diastema is a gap between adjacent teeth that occur physiologically from the teeth eruption. However, diastema between the maxillary central incisors in an adult can be an aesthetic problem and sometimes impair speech. Diastema treatment with low or enlarged superior labial frenulum includes frenectomy, orthodontic treatment, veneers, crown, and bridge or resin-based composite direct restorations. This case report will discuss the rehabilitation of diastema in an aesthetic zone of maxillary central incisors due to low frenulum attachment. It was done by a minimally invasive approach using direct composite restoration, completed within several hours after the study model was analyzed, and much less expensive than other forms of treatment. The protocol involved model analysis, smile design, mock-up, silicon index creation, and composite selection. Patient cooperation and understanding of the limitations are critical to long-term treatment success. The direct composite resin is a fast, simple method yet durable to achieve good improvement of small diastema in the aesthetic zone. And stable after three years. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p329-342

Abstract

ABSTRACT Lung carcinoma is cancer that develops from the abnormal proliferation of lung epithelial cells. Lung carcinoma has two forms: Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (NSCLC) and Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (SCLC). NSCLC makes up 85% of lung carcinomas cases. EGFR overexpression is often seen in NSCLC. This research aims to discuss and provide information about the patient's characteristics, smoking status, functional status, clinical stage, histopathological diagnosis, and EGFR test of NSCLC. This research is a literature study that collects, manages, uses and reviews research data from scientific journals, previous research manuscripts, and textbooks. The literature review results were that most patients with NSCLC were found in the 55–65 age group. NSCLC can happen to both genders. NSCLC was found in smokers and non-smokers. The patient's functional status was mostly "very dependent". The clinical stage of NSCLC patients is often found in stages III and IV. The most common histopathological diagnosis of NSCLC was adenocarcinoma. EGFR results can be positive or negative; most occur in the adenocarcinoma subtype. EGFR overexpression in NSCLC occurs due to somatic mutations in the tyrosine kinase domain, causing continuous signal transduction and phosphorylation. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p343-354

Abstract

ABSTRACT Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums that occurs in response to plaque bacteria that become more easily accumulated and difficult to clean in the gum area. The Red betel plant (Piper crocatum) and green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) are plant species from the Piperaceae family empirically used as antibacterial in gingivitis patients due to the presence of secondary metabolite compounds used as medicine. This study aims to determine the macroscopic description and the content of qualitative phytochemical compounds in red betel leaf and green betel leaf. The research method of this study was a laboratory experiment. The red and green betel leaves from Manoko Lembang, West Java, were examined for macroscopic images in color, smell, taste, and leaf size. A betel leaf qualitative phytochemical examination of flavonoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, saponins, and quinones. The results of the macroscopic analysis showed that the red betel leaf was green and silver with red grooves, the aromatic smell of betel, bitter taste, and the average leaf size was 3x5 cm. The green betel leaf was green, had a distinctive smell of betel slightly bitter taste accompanied by spicy, and the average leaf size was 2x4 cm. Qualitative phytochemical examination showed that red and green betel leaves contain compounds containing alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, saponins, and quinones. It is necessary to examine the quantity of quantitative phytochemical components, so their potential as a gingivitis herbal medicine is clear. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p355-364

Abstract

ABSTRACT Blind people have limitations in receiving dental and oral health information. It can facilitate the occurrence of caries. Blind people have limitations in performing various activities that require vision assistance, such as maintaining oral and dental hygiene when brushing their teeth, so blind people often experience multiple problems with their teeth, one of which is caries. This study aimed to determine the caries index in blind children in SLBN A Cimahi City and SLBN A Bandung City. The study used a cross-sectional design and consecutive sampling. The number of samples was 21 blind children. The study's results on blind children aged 6-12 showed a very low to moderate caries index. The def-t index in children with low vision blindness has moderate criteria; in children with total blind blindness, it has low standards. Children with low vision and total blind have the same DMF-T index, which is low. The def-t index in SLBN A Citeureup Cimahi City has low criteria, while SLBN A Padjadjaran Bandung City has a def-t index with moderate standards. SLBN A Citeureup Cimahi City and SLBN, A Padjadjaran Bandung City, have the same DMF-T index, which is low. Parents, teachers, caregivers, and health workers need to pay more attention to the dental and oral health of blind children. DOI : 10.54052/jhds.v2n2.p365-374
