Abstract

Background: Supplier selection in the perishable agroindustry, such as for mushrooms, is a complex and strategic process. It significantly impacts supply chain performance owing to the perishability and quality sensitivity of the products involved. Traditionally, decision-making methods in this area often lack preliminary validation, resulting in suboptimal supplier choice.Purpose: This study aims to integrate bibliometric analysis and multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches, particularly the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), to develop a robust data-driven model for supplier selection in the mushroom agroindustry.Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review using the PRISMA framework and bibliometric analysis of Scopus-indexed articles identified the most relevant MCDM methods. A case study approach involving expert judgment was used to evaluate mushroom suppliers based on the following five criteria: quality, price, delivery, service, and product suitability.Findings/Result: A bibliometric review confirmed that AHP, TOPSIS, and fuzzy logic are the most frequently applied methods. AHP was selected for its strengths in handling both qualitative and quantitative data and validating decision consistency. The results showed that Supplier A had the highest overall score (0.389), followed by Supplier C (0.345) and Supplier B (0.266), with a consistency ratio (CR) below 0.10, validating the assessments. Conclusion: Integrating bibliometric analysis with MCDM methods offers a more objective and evidence-based approach to supplier selection. The developed model enhances decision accuracy, supports strategic sourcing, and ensures quality and timeliness in highly perishable product supply chains.Originality/value (State of the art): This study pioneers the direct integration of bibliometric insights into an MCDM-based decision-making framework applied in a real-world agroindustry context. The methodology is replicable and adaptable across various industries facing similar supplier evaluation challenges. Keywords: supplier selection, multi-criteria decision making, analytic hierarchy process, bibliometrics

Abstract

Background: The Binekas Cooperative, a palm sugar producer cooperative in the Sukabumi Regency, faces an increasing demand for sustainable products that require enhanced economic, environmental, and social performance.Purpose: This study aims to identify cooperative and smallholder profiles, existing business models, and internal and external factors, and formulate strategies for developing a sustainable cooperative business model.Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and literature reviews, from May to August 2024. Analytical methods include situational analysis, Circular Business Model Canvas (CBMC), SOAR analysis (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results), IFAS-EFAS, and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).Findings/Result: The study found that the Binekas Cooperative has a simple organizational structure with strong community roots. Internal and external factors were mapped using CBMC and SOAR to generate four strategic options: expansion of capital access, green productivity optimization, business process standardization, and product diversification through digitalization. Using AHP, the top strategic priority identified was expanding access to capital through inclusive partnerships with member farmers. Conclusion: The cooperative's priority strategy is to expand capital access by strengthening inclusive partnerships with smallholders, who play a key role in governance, and developing a strong, dynamic organizational structure.Originality/value (State of the art): This study shows that the CBMC framework can encourage cooperatives to be adaptive by involving stakeholders under sustainability principles, strengthening governance, enhancing economic activities through social capital within communities, and promoting environmentally friendly production processes. Abstract

Background: Fisheries play a crucial role in food security and livelihoods in coastal communities. However, inefficient value chains hinder optimal economic returns for small-scale fishers. Analyzing the value chain of island mackerel (Rastrelliger faughni) in the Lagonoy Gulf helps to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.Purpose: This study aimed to assess the value chain of island mackerel in selected coastal municipalities around the Lagonoy Gulf, Philippines, to understand its structure, dynamics, and socioeconomic implications.Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a case study approach using primary data (surveys, interviews, focus groups with fishers, traders, and local officials) and secondary data. It involved a total of 114 respondents, including 100 fisherfolks representing the target population, 10 participants in focused group discussions (FGDs), and four key informant interviews (KIIs) with fishery experts selected from the local government and barangay officials, including a municipal agriculturist, an agriculture technologist in the fisheries sector, and a Department of Agriculture officer. The value chain analysis framework was used to map the actors, flows, and margins.Findings/Results: The study revealed key actors, such as fishers, consolidators, retailers, and processors. Price disparity and limited infrastructure were identified as major constraints. The value chain analysis showed that fishermen earned the highest average net profit, earning 95.30% during the peak season and 59.65% during the lean season. Retailers earned 15.19% during peak and 9.11% in lean seasons, whereas processors’ profit margins varied by product, with seasoned dried buraws reaching up to 57.91% in the peak season and 63.02% in the lean season. Retailer processors showed strong profitability, with margins of 82.84% (peak) and 77.33% (lean).  Recommendations include strengthening fisher cooperatives, improving cold-storage access, and enhancing market linkages. Conclusion: The value chain of island mackerel in the Gulf of Lagonoy has the potential for economic improvement. However, inefficiencies and limited support hinder performance. A more coordinated approach among stakeholders can significantly enhance the outcomes.Originality/value (state-of-the-art): This study provides a comprehensive local-scale value chain analysis of island mackerels in the Philippines. This study provides practical insights for fishery development, particularly in coastal community contexts. Keywords: island mackerel, value chain, fisheries, coastal municipalities, Lagonoy Gulf

Abstract

Background: As one of the world’s largest coffee exporters, Indonesia has significantly increased its coffee export value. The rapidly growing global coffee market, with China being one of the largest, shows a promising potential. Nonetheless, Indonesia is facing stiff competition from other coffee-exporting countries.Purpose: This study analyzes the dynamics of Indonesia's coffee competitiveness in the Chinese market and the factors affecting coffee exports to the Chinese market.Design/methodology/approach: This research uses RCA, EPD, X-Model and Gravity models as analytical tools. Findings/Results: The RCA analysis shows that Indonesia has a comparative advantage during the two research periods, while the EPD analysis finds that Indonesia has successfully improved its competitive position from lagging to rising in the second period. In addition, the X-Model analysis shows that China had a lower potential market for Indonesia in the first period. However, this market becomes optimistic in the next period, so there is much potential to continue increasing coffee exports to this country. In addition, gravity model analysis shows that factors such as the real GDP of exporting countries and China's real GDP affect coffee exports to the Chinese market. Conclusion: Indonesia's competitiveness has improved in the Chinese market, and the economic growth of exporters and China is essential in driving coffee exports to the Chinese market.Originality/value (state of the art): This study explicitly highlights China's fast-growing non-traditional coffee market, which currently shows high growth rates in coffee consumption. Abstract

Background: The industrial sector depends on a sustainable supply chain, which requires an organization to integrate (trade off) social, technological, economic, and environmental factors. One industry that applies the triple bottom line concept is palm oil. The palm oil industry is believed to have two drawbacks: harm to the environment, and social welfare. Sustainable supply chains have the potential to increase social welfare, reduce environmental impact, and increase profitability.  Purpose:  This study aims to enhance the understanding and implementation of sustainability in the palm oil supply  chain through three key objectives: (1) mapping current sustainability practices and performance across all supply chain actors; (2) analyzing limitations and inconsistencies in existing sustainability measurement methods, particularly in addressing the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) dimensions; and (3) developing standardized, practical, and theoretically grounded Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support consistent and transparent sustainability evaluation. Design/methodology/approach: The Matrix of Crossed Impact Multiplications Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) method was employed. This approach makes the strength of the correlation between the variables and secret to a more methodical and targeted solution more evident. Data were collected through surveys and in-depth interviews with 16 respondents, including managers, sustainability officers, and operational staff, across the palm oil supply chain. The research was conducted between August and December 2023 in North Sumatra, Indonesia, specifically in PTPN III and the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK Sei Mangkei). Conclusion: Based on the Matrix of Direct Influences (MDI) and the Matrix of Indirect Influences (MII), important variables significantly affect other variables. A MICMAC analysis was conducted to determine the critical elements in the sustainability of the palm oil industry supply chain. This analysis serves as the basis for the variables of industrial productivity, financial performance, access to price information, level of industry employee education, and availability of infrastructure.Originality/value (State of the art):  This study employs the Matrix of Crossed Impact Multiplications Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) method to identify key triple bottom-line indicators for implementing sustainable supply chains. Because Many sustainability studies focus on descriptive analysis or case comparisons, few apply a modeling approach that shows inter-variable influence and causal mapping, which enhances strategic decision making and improves the practical applicability of sustainability frameworks. Keywords: MICMAC method, sustainability, supply chain, palm industry
