This study was conducted in October-November 2017. The study population of this study is the students of class X who wear the fixed orthodontic appliance. Data analysis used chi-square. Respondents of fixed orthodontic appliance users orthodontic toothbrush are 60,5 %. Respondents of fixed orthodontic appliance users had a healthy gingival status is 57,9 %. The result of statistical analysis obtained significant value = 0,029<0,05. The type of toothbrush used has a correlation with the status of the gingiva on the students of a fixed orthodontic appliance.

Abstract

Knowledge of dental and oral health includes 4 items: maintaining healthy teeth and mouth, consuming the right foods, avoiding bad habits, and using fluorine. The fixed orthodontics consist of a bracket attached to the tooth and used for a long time, so the tooth is very difficult to clean and often has gingival inflammation or gingivitis. To determine the relationship between dental and oral health knowledge with gingival status on fixed orthodontic users in private dental clinics. The type of research used was observational with cross sectional design. Sampling technique is by purposive sampling. The study time lasted from October to November 2017 at a private dental clinic. The instrument of this research is questionnaire and format of examination of gingival status. Data were analyzed using Kendall Tau Correlation test. The level of knowledge of respondents with high category is 75%, gingival status of respondents with healthy category is 60% and the number of respondents who have high knowledge with healthy gingival status is 71.1%. The result of statistical test using correlation test of Kendall Tau known significance value (p) 0.003 then the value is smaller than ? = 0,05 (p <0,05). Oral and dental knowledge is associated with gingival status in fixed orthodontic patients.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment may lead to environmental changes in the oral cavity that may occur in a number of users of the orthodontic appliance, such as changes in bacterial concentration, salivary buffering capacity, salivary acidity (pH) and salivary flow rate. Xylitol stimulates salivary flow and helps restore saliva acid/base balance because it cannot be converted to acid by oral bacteria. To identify the difference in salivary pH before and after chewing xylitol gum in the users of fixed orthodontic appliance. This research is quasi-experimental with one group pretest-posttest design. Samples were students of SMA Kolombo Sleman who used a fixed orthodontic appliance. Data were analyzed using a Wilcoxon test. The salivary pH of the users of a fixed orthodontic appliance before chewing xylitol gum mostly belonged to acid criterion (43.8%), and the base criterion (34.3%). After chewing xylitol gum, the salivary pH of the users of fixed orthodontic appliance mostly belonged to a neutral criterion (78.1%). The results of the Wilcoxon test showed that the salivary pH before and after chewing gum xylitol in the users of fixed orthodontic appliance had a P value of 0.027 <? 0.05. There is a significant difference in salivary pH before and after chewing xylitol gum in users of fixed orthodontic appliance.

Abstract

Teeth had very important roles and functions so that someone with poor knowledge on tooth function might have poor oral health. The poor condition of the oral cavity might cause tooth loss and if not replaced with denture would disturb the functions and activities of the oral cavity, as well as influencing nutritional status. Determining the relation between knowledge on tooth function and nutritional status of elderly people with partial tooth loss in Mamasa Sub-district, West Sulawesi. This was an observational analytical study with Cross-Sectional design performed on September–November 2017. The research variables were knowledge on tooth function and nutritional status. The total sample was 64 people. Sampling used stratified random sampling technique. Data collection used questionnaire, body height measurement tool, and body weight scale. Data analysis used Kendall-Tau test. Most of the respondents’ knowledge on tooth function was high and most of the nutritional status of the elderly people were poor. The result of analysis test showed significance value of p=0,285 in male respondents and p=0,971 in female respondents (p>0,05), showing no significant relationship between knowledge on tooth function and nutritional status of elderly people with partial tooth loss. There was no relation between knowledge on tooth function and nutritional status of elderly people with partial tooth loss.

Abstract

This booklet is a small book (half quarto) and thin, no more than 30 pieces of back and forth that contains about writing and drawing. The term booklet comes from books and leaflets meaning that booklet media is combination of leaflets and books with small formats (sizes) such as leaflets, it’s just how presentation is much shorter than the book. Children with mental disabilities are individuals who experience obstacles or delays in mental development far below the average so that it has difficulty to learn, communicate, and socialize as well as self care, especially brushing teeth. Booklet that contains how to care for teeth, especially how to brush your teeth can be a guidline for treating teeth in children with mental disabilities in SLB and availability is still very minimal even can be said none at all so that a teacher is still very wide open and still allow the media booklet to be developed. Availability of booklets in SLB Class 1 Yogyakarta City as a media as well as guide for mentally handicapped children to guide tooth care by brushing teeth. Research methods to achieve to goal of Quasi Experiments with fishbone diagram design. Pre-Post Test with control design. The population in this study are mentally disabled children in SLB Class 1 Yogyakarta City. Results from the examination were recorded in the OHIS format, than collected and analyzed using a T-Test statistic test. Using parametric statistic test Paired Sample T-Test there is a significant difference of OHIS score after using booklet p value < 0,05 so it can be stated that booklet can influence in dental and mouth care (OHIS score) children with mental disabilities SLB Class 1 Yogyakarta City

Abstract

Long-term smoking effects can cause a decrease in salivary pH to be more acidic. To investigate the correlation of smoking habit and salivary pH on smoker students in the South Kalimantan Student Dormitory in Yogyakarta. This research is an analytical survey with a cross-sectional design, sampling was done by purposive sampling method and the sample used was 39 smoking students who have smoked with a minimum period of 1 year. The results were analyzed using Kendall-Tau correlation test with SPSS program. Smoking habits in the student smokers are included in heavy smoking habits (61.5%), whereas saliva pH was mostly included in the acid salivary pH criteria (64.1%). Results of cross-tabulation as many as 56.4% of smoker students have a heavy smoking habit with acid salivary pH. The test of statistical analysis obtained significance value (p) of 0.000 with Kendall-Tau correlation coefficient of -0.727. The p-value (0.000) < 0.05, meaning that the results showed a significant relationship between smoking habit and salivary pH. There is a significant correlation between smoking habit and salivary pH on smoker students in the South Kalimantan Student Dormitory in Yogyakarta.
