Joseph Bingham (1668−1723) was one of the defenders of Reformed Orthodoxy in the Church of England. In his time, he was known as a patristic scholar whose magnum opus, titled Origines Ecclesiasticae, or The Antiquities of the Christian Church, stood as a testimony of his superb studies. This massive work of ten volumes was published between 1708 and 1722. Entangled in a Trinitarian controversy at Oxford University in his younger years, he spent the rest of his life proofing his orthodoxy through his patristic studies and publication. This article focuses on Bingham’s use of the writings of the church fathers in his defense of the theological beliefs and practices of infant baptism in the Church of England. By defending the orthodoxy of the Church of England—by way of its alignment with the church fathers—he indirectly positioned himself in the same line of orthodoxy and therefore purging himself of the tarnished reputation during the height of the Trinitarian controversy at Oxford.

This paper examines the relationship between apologetics and preaching in three sermons by the apostles Peter and Paul, and finds that, for the apostles, apologetics and preaching are not separate disciplines but inseparable and interdependent components of gospel ministry and the life of the church. Taking apostolic preaching as paradigmatic for ministry and Christian life today, this paper argues for a retrieval of this organic understanding, on the one hand, of apologetics that aims toward and follows the structure of gospel proclamation, and, on the other, of preaching which features vindication of the whole of counsel of God against unbelief in its various forms.

This article examines John Calvin’s (1509–1564) method of biblical interpretation. It first considers his approach in the context of the history of interpretation and then examines two examples of his method of interpretation of Psalm 2 and Acts 20:17–38. It will be suggested that Calvin’s approach can enrich the renewal of interest in theological interpretation in the academy and the church. Although some traits of Calvin’s interpretation resemble modern approaches, this essay confirms the shift in Calvin studies that classify his method as a type of precritical interpretation—in particular, Calvin’s concern for application, his use of the analogy of faith, and his integration of exegesis and doctrine.

Doing theology and constructing Christian dogmatics always rely on the good use of reason and logical and critical thinking. Analytic theology is an intellectual movement in the twenty-first century that emphasizes the significance of employing tools from analytic philosophy and modern logic in doing theology. However, analytic theology in general has not been successful in producing theological works which adhere to the rules and standards in the science of theology. This paper discusses an “analytic”-theological model from the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century tradition called Reformed scholasticism, and lists some excellent characteristics from it. By providing a historical and analytical survey of the primary and secondary sources related to Reformed scholasticism, this author demonstrates how the Reformed scholastic theological tradition that is confessional, systematic, dialogical, catholic, contextual, and educative inspires contemporary and future theologians to keep on constructing Christian dogmatics that is rational but not rationalistic, open-minded but not compromising truth, and interdisciplinary yet integrative.

From the perspective of historical theology, the perception of history is an example of the importance of studying history. Narratives that are widely circulated and believed by many people do not necessarily have historical facts. Research to find and carefully examine historical facts can make one revise previously held perceptions of history. Historical theology research is no less important in the theology field than other branches of theology, such as biblical, systematics, and practical theology. From research on concepts, events, and characters in church history, Christians and the church today can understand the causes of various mistakes that have occurred in the past so that they can avoid making similar mistakes. In addition, we can also strive to develop Christian teachings and practices that are faithful to the Bible to answer the challenges of the times. Although not all of them fall into the category of historical theology, the articles in this edition are examples of efforts to explore theology and theological methods using a historical theological approach.

Does Reformed theology necessarily imply vehement objections to natural theology? Do the Reformed Christians need to despise the natural theology at all? This article argues that "the book of nature" will establish the historical-theological foundation for appreciating the general revelation in the creation and affirming natural theology. In order to get the argument, it will summarize the historical overview of liber naturae in Christianity and the Reformed tradition. Subsequently, the Reformed Evangelical perspective is a tool of theological arguments in responding to the objections to natural theology. Following the Reformed theology and Evangelicalism, the book of nature should be read in the spectacles of the Holy Scripture. Natural theology is also affirmed as a preparatory step in the gospel proclamation.

This article explains how the ‘nature of the church, which is mission’ affects the activities of the church and the continuity of church life in the world. This goal is achieved by using a descriptive-comparative method, through an analysis and comparison of the thoughts of Lesslie Newbigin and Johan Herman Bavinck regarding the church and mission. This article shows that the activity and continuity of church life are closely related to church identity.
