Abstract

Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning is a major book in existential psychology, which offers a deep understanding of the human search for meaning during suffering. In this article, I will delve into how and where contemporary psychological practices are greatly impacted by Frankl's logotherapy. The paper commences with an analysis of Frankl’s life and his work within the historical context showing how the experiences he went through in Nazi concentration camps influenced his theoretical perceptions. Furthermore, it looks at some principles of logotherapy such as personal voids and desire for meaning in order to discuss their role in treating trauma and building up people’s resistance power. Lastly, it underscores logotherapy’s amalgamation with other therapeutic modalities, its influence on positive psychology as well as its wider applications within healthcare systems and schools among others. This paper provides a detailed examination of Frankl’s principles that remain very useful in promoting mental healthiness and self-improvement thus affirming how meaningfulness can be used to respond to human pain.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the types of language styles used by Lara Jean Covey and the social factors that influence her to use different language styles in Sofia Alvarez’s Film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. This research is a content analysis. The source of data was the transcript of the film. Data were analyzed based on the five language styles adopted from Martin Joos’ (1976) and Francis’ (1965) theories. Holmes’ (2001) theory was used to analyze the social factors that influence Lara Jean Covey in using different language styles. The findings showed three types of language styles used by Lara Jean Covey. The three language styles were the consultative style, intimate style, and casual style. The most dominant language style used by Lara Jean Covey in the film is casual style. She tended to use a casual style to make the atmosphere more relaxed. Then, four social factors influencing Lara Jean in using different language styles are participants, setting, topic, and function.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how hidden meanings are conveyed in memes and the type of meme studied is a meme with the Virgin vs. Chad template and other similar template memes namely Swole Doge vs. Cheems on the official meme site and Know Your Meme's official Instagram account. By using descriptive qualitative methods, this research aims to analyze the meaning of denotation and connotation attached to several data. Researchers found 10 memes that use the template Virgin vs. Chad and 10 memes that use the Swole Doge vs. Cheems. The results of the analysis show that the denotational meaning in these memes shows figures that have been arranged and edited as creatively as possible by the creator without describing any further meaning, just figures and text written without context, while the connotative meaning in these memes describe the hidden meanings of the meme, such as how the meme template functions, the role of the figures displayed, and the written text has an implied meaning, whether it is the opinion of the meme maker, public opinion, facts in the field, even there are exaggerated opinions and even false information.

Abstract

This study analyzed the conversational implicatures in the conversation between the English teacher and the students during an English class session in one of the classrooms at SMP Negeri 9 Pontianak. The purposes of this study were to identify the types of conversational implicatures used by the English teacher and the students, and also to describe the implied meaning of the conversational implicatures used by the English teacher and the students during one English class session in the classroom. This study focused on analyzing the conversation using Paul Grice’s theory of conversational implicature. The results of this study demonstrated the usage of two different types of conversational implicature by both the teacher and the students: generalized and particularized. The analysis also demonstrated that the implied meanings derived from these conversational implicatures conveyed a variety of communicative purposes beyond the literal meaning of the words spoken. These included informing, requesting, ordering, confirming, and expressing ignorance.

Abstract

A broader transformation took place in the literary fields, mostly in terms of the protagonists' internal conflicts and psychological issues in the 20th century, which can be clearly seen in the works of prominent writers like D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce. This research article explores the psychological issues and internal conflicts of the protagonists of Sons and Lovers, Mrs. Dalloway, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The main characters of these novels suffer from extreme identity and existential crises. Employing Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic frameworks alongside modernist narrative techniques, the study elucidates how the subconscious mind and the human psyche are intricately rendered in the portrayal of the protagonists. The most prominent writers of this period, for instance, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce, largely use fragmented narratives to draw out the inner turmoil and obsessive-compulsive symptoms of the main characters in their novels. Focusing on conjugal relations, love, emotion, passion, psychological conflict, class conflict, and middle-class sentiment of the people of this period with a qualitative discussion, the paper finds that the Industrial Revolution and scientific development functioned as catalysts to transform the human psychology of this period.

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to investigate the use of lexical bundles in the inaugural speeches of Democratic and Republican presidents in the United States in order to identify linguistic differences associated with lexical bundles. Drawing on Biber et al. (2004) framework, the study used AntConc software (version 3.5.9; Anthony, 2020) to analyse the lexical bundles used in the speeches. The study found that noun phrase (NP) fragments were the common structural pattern in all speeches. Democratic presidents tended to use NP + of phrase fragments, whereas Republican presidents used prepositional phrase (PP) + of fragments. In terms of the functional classification, both political parties showed a strong priority for referential expressions. These findings point to different linguistic styles associated with each political party, influencing their communication styles in public discourse. Future research is encouraged to look into how linguistic patterns influence political communication and persuasive strategies.

Abstract

Technology has significantly influenced student learning and empowered them to cope with modern learning strategies. Technology will work if the implementation is done well, where students use digital tools to aid learning rather than become dependent on them. This paper is anchored by a qualitative library-research design to review the challenges and opportunities in English language teaching in terms of integrating research digital tools, content-based, classroom management, and cultural and social differences. Content-Based Instruction (CBI) is better for teaching English as a second language than other traditional conventional methods. Even though there are some challenges like financial limits and cultural barriers, CBI is very flexible and practical, and will be a nice way to learn, creativity, and participation. Furthermore, interactive techniques such as role-playing, debate exercises, and peer tutoring create an immersive learning environment, letting students learn by application instead of memorization. However, some challenges remain due to several factors such as large class size and limited resources. The government advocates for the accessibility of knowledge for everyone, particularly for the underprivileged, which allows all individuals to have equal access to English language education regardless of social and cultural status.
LIMINAL SPACE IN WILLIAM BLAKE'S POETRY Olasode, Chikodi Adeola

Abstract

“Thresholds" between different states of consciousness, states of being, or fully cognitive and perceptive states are the essence of many poems by William Blake. This paper discusses how liminality is used by Blake to break limits and express the experience of change. Based on the close readings of the selected examples from Blake’s opus—‘Songs of Innocence and of Experience’—as well as his prophetic books, it is possible to define certain characteristics of the liminal space in his work. The liminal exploration of Blake's poetry possesses the quality of traversing those boundaries and questioning the societal conditions surrounding the event or, at the very least, taking the revisit of innocence by the experience into a different space designated for imagining further with respect to human existence. It should also be noted that there is a duality of the body and a duality of the spirit in Blake's works; they are Blake's pronouncements of a totality both outside the physical and the spiritual.  Through his questioning of set norms, Blake empowers readers to reexamine their understanding of morality, spirituality, and identity and encourages their reincorporation into actual change.

Abstract

This paper analyzes midlife crisis and conflict, and their impact on familial relationships in John Updike's short story "Separating". Updike portrays the disintegration of a marriage through the portrayal of Richard and Joan Maple, a middle-aged couple, as they confront the emotional complexities which their impending separation imposes on their family dynamics. By intertwining both internal and external conflicts, Updike addresses love’s erosion, personal dissatisfaction, and societal transformation. Richard's inner conflicts—his struggle to accept the inevitability of the divorce, his emotional detachment, and his ambivalence toward his role as a father—reflect broader cultural and emotional shifts in mid-20th-century America, particularly the evolving perceptions of marriage and family structures. Employing a qualitative method, this research article examines how midlife crisis and conflict are represented in Updike's "Separating" within the sociocultural context of the time. This study, however, continues to make a significant contribution to world literature, offering future researchers valuable insights, ideas, and viewpoint on the writer and his works.
