Abstract

The increasing problem of plastic waste and public awareness of environmental sustainability have encouraged the growth of creative industries based on recycling. One player in this industry is PASTE LAB Yogyakarta, which processes plastic waste into various eco-design products that have both functional and economic value. This study aims to analyze the production practices of eco-design products made from recycled plastic waste at PASTE LAB Yogyakarta from the perspectives of eco-design, circular economy, social transformation, and the community concept. The theories used include Eco-Design Theory, Circular Economy Theory, Social Transformation Theory, and Community Concept. The research uses an ethnographic method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The results show that PASTE LAB processes types of plastic waste such as HDPE, PP, LDPE, and PS into furniture, interior decorations, and accessories through production processes based on recycling. The practice reflects the application of eco-design and circular economy principles because waste is reprocessed into materials and useful products. In addition, environmental education activities and the provision of drop boxes also encourage community involvement in waste management. However, PASTE LAB still faces challenges such as limited raw materials, production technology, capital, and industry competition

Abstract

Sleep disturbance carries a substantial global burden, and insomnia stands out as the most prevalent manifestation, affecting between one-third and one-half of the adult population. Women bear a disproportionately greater burden, largely owing to cyclical reproductive hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is hypothesized to impair sleep via three converging pathways: reduced luteal-phase serotonin synthesis, aberrant allopregnanolone modulation of GABA-A receptors, and circadian pacemaker disruption. A cross-sectional observational study enrolled 62 female employees from two financial-sector companies in Jakarta during September–October 2018. Instruments included a sociodemographic questionnaire, a validated PMS severity scale, and the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Fisher exact test was used for bivariate analysis (p < 0.05). Young adults aged 18–35 years comprised 85.5% of participants. Premenstrual symptoms were universal; 92.7% reported mild-to-moderate and 7.3% severe-to-very-severe intensity. ISI-defined insomnia was detected in 48.4% of participants. Neither age (p = 1.000) nor PMS severity (p = 0.189) reached statistical significance; however, the odds ratio for insomnia in the severe PMS subgroup was 4.77 (95% CI: 0.49–46.3). No significant associations were demonstrated, most likely because an underpowered severe-PMS subgroup precluded reliable detection. The magnitude of the odds ratio signals a clinically meaningful trend warranting prospective investigation with objective sleep measurement and systematic confounder control.

Abstract

Packaging serves not only as product protection but also as a visual communication medium that represents local cultural identity. This study aims to examine how cultural representation is realized through the development of graphic and structural packaging design in the Aneka Rasa and Aneka Buah editions of Dodol Picnic Garut using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic framework. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through visual observation, documentation, and literature review. Data were analyzed using Peirce's triadic semiotic model, consisting of representamen, object, and interpretant, to identify the cultural meanings embedded in graphic and structural packaging elements. The findings reveal that Garut's cultural identity is communicated through the integration of color, illustrations, typography, logos, materials, packaging form, transparent windows, carrying handles, and opening systems as a unified system of signs. This study demonstrates that the integration of graphic and structural packaging design effectively represents the geographical, gastronomic, historical, and tourism identities of Garut, thereby extending the application of Peirce's semiotics in packaging design research.
