Abstract

Social support is a crucial pillar in psychological recovery and an individual's ability to establish social interactions. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine illustrates how forms of social support can catalyze changes in the main character's behavior and mental health. However, previous research on Taylor's classifications of social support in novels remains very limited. The objective of this research was to identify and analyze the reflection of the three types of social support in the novel Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman and describe the role of each in plot and character development. The approach in this study is Genetic Structuralism integrated with Social Support Theory. Data were collected in the form of dialog quotations, narratives, and descriptions that reflected social support, then classified according to Taylor's theory. The findings of the study showed that emotional support was most prominent, followed by informational support and instrumental support. Emotional support provides Eleanor with the empathy and understanding needed to rebuild her sense of self, while informational and informational and instrumental supports offer practical guidance and tangible assistance that empower her recovery. Together, these social supports drive Eleanor's healing and willingness to engage socially. The structuralist genetic approach reveals the author's personal perspectives on loneliness and kindness that emerge as foundational themes, illustrating how interpersonal connections are essential for personal transformation and social reintegration. This study highlights how literature reflects psychological realities and suggests that portraying social support can deepen understanding in both literary and psychological fields, encouraging writers to emphasize everyday kindness in character recovery.

Abstract

Grammatical deviation serves as a crucial stylistic tool in contemporary music lyrics, yet its strategic use by female pop artists to convey authenticity and emotion remains underexplored. This study addresses that gap by analyzing grammatical deviations in Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS (2023) album through Leech’s (1969) framework. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the researcher examined all twelve songs, identifying, classifying, and interpreting deviations in structure and form. The findings reveal 50 instances of grammatical deviation categorized into omission, morphological deviation, informal contractions, verb tense/aspect deviation, lexical deviation, and repetition. Omission emerged as the most frequent type, reflecting the artist’s conversational tone and rhythmic compression, while morphological deviations and contractions highlight spoken authenticity. Less frequent yet impactful deviations, such as taboo words and repetition, intensify emotional expression and rhythm. Overall, the study concludes that grammatical deviations in GUTS are deliberate stylistic choices rather than linguistic errors, enhancing Rodrigo’s identity, relatability, and emotional realism. These findings contribute to linguistic stylistics by demonstrating how contemporary female pop artists creatively manipulate grammar to express individuality and connect with modern audiences.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of summarizing strategies in improving students’ writing ability. Students at SMA N 1 Lembean Timur continue to experience low writing proficiency, which is marked by limited English vocabulary and weak sentence construction skills. This quantitative study employed a pre-experimental design using a single-group pre-test and post-test format. Purposive sampling was used to select 20 out of 60 eleventh-grade students at SMA N 1 Lembean Timur as the research sample. The study was conducted over two weeks in May 2023. An expository writing test was used as the research instrument, requiring students to write a short expository paragraph that was evaluated based on content, organization, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics. To determine the significance of the improvement, the data were analyzed using gain scores and a t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance, with the mean pre-test score increasing from 57.50 to 74.00 in the post-test. A statistically significant difference was indicated by the significance value, which was less than 0.05 (p = 0.000 < 0.05). As a result, the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was accepted. These findings demonstrate that summarizing strategies effectively enhance students’ writing abilities and should be appropriately applied in classroom instruction to improve students’ learning outcomes.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an essential aspect of learning English; therefore, appropriate learning strategies are needed to help students improve their understanding and effective use of vocabulary. In practice, the implementation of these strategies is inseparable from various challenges, making it important to examine how teachers apply vocabulary-learning strategies, the obstacles they encounter, and the efforts they make to overcome them. This study examines the strategies employed by teachers to improve students’ vocabulary, identifies the obstacles they face, and explains the methods used to address these challenges. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this study, which was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano during the 2024/2025 academic year. The participants were two English teachers, and the data were collected through interviews and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that teachers use strategies such as translation, drills, memorization, singing, and games. The obstacles identified include limited instructional time, low student motivation, a lack of learning media, and variations in students’ language proficiency. To overcome these challenges, teachers adapt their strategies, create simple learning resources, and apply engaging instructional methods. In conclusion, effective teaching strategies play a crucial role in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. This research aims to provide guidance for teachers and researchers in developing more effective vocabulary-learning approaches. In addition, the findings offer practical insights that can support educators and schools in designing vocabulary instruction that is more responsive to students’ needs and classroom conditions.

Abstract

Deixis has an important role in communication by allowing speakers and listeners to locate referents, events, and actions within a specific context. In real life interactions, deictic expressions help participants identify who is involved, when events occur, and where actions take place, thereby ensuring clarity and coherence in discourse. Similarly, in staged or fictional conversations, such as cinematic dialogue or film, deixis is essential for expressing social relationships, emotional states, and character identities. Through the use of deictic forms, speakers convey not only the literal meaning of their utterances but also pragmatic and interpersonal nuances that shape audience understanding and engagement within the narrative. The aims of this study were to identify the types of deixis found in Lilo & Stitch (2025) and to analyze their pragmatic strategies in conveying emotional and social meanings in the utterances of the main characters, Lilo and Stitch. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using the documentation method to collect data from the film’s transcript. The data were analyzed using Levinson’s model of deixis, which includes personal, spatial, temporal, discourse, and social categories. The results showed that personal deixis was the most frequently used type, functioning to express personal identity, emotional closeness, and character relationships. Spatial and temporal deixis provided contextual anchoring of events, while discourse deixis maintained narrative coherence and thematic progression. Social deixis appeared less frequently but indicated respect, intimacy, and family hierarchy among characters. Overall, deixis in Lilo & Stitch (2025) served not only as a linguistic reference system but also as a pragmatic strategy that reflected belonging, empathy, and cross-species communication. The findings implied that cinematic dialogue can be an effective medium for studying pragmatic meaning, offering insights for linguistic studies and language education.

Abstract

The Little Prince is a well-known children’s literary work that conveys deep philosophical messages through simple language. Understanding how meaning is expressed beyond literal words is important to reveal the emotional, cultural, and social values reflected in the story. This study aims to analyze the emotional, cultural, and social connotations found in The Little Prince using Leech’s (1981) theory of connotative meaning. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using document analysis. The data were obtained from selected expressions in the novel and analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s (2014) qualitative data analysis model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that emotional connotations reveal feelings of love, regret, sadness, and attachment; cultural connotations highlight the contrast between children’s imaginative perspectives and adults’ logical thinking; and social connotations emphasize responsibility and meaningful relationships. In conclusion, connotative meaning plays an essential role in expressing the novel’s philosophical messages. These findings contribute to semantic studies and can support the teaching of linguistic and literary interpretation by helping students understand deeper meanings in literary texts.

Abstract

As a popular young adult novel, All the Bright Places frequently portrays characters who often violate Grice’s maxim violation when dealing with sensitive and emotional situations. Analyzing these maxim violations is important because it facilitates a more comprehensive understanding of the author’s intentional construction of dialogue to reveal pragmatic meanings, particularly maxim violations within the Cooperative Principle. This study aims to analyze violations of Grice’s Cooperative Principle in the novel All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, focusing on dialogues between Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from dialogues between the two main characters in the novel All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven and are collected through documentation and note-taking techniques. The data are analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle and interpreted using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. The findings show that these maxim violations are used as communication strategies to avoid discussing sensitive topics, maintain personal boundaries, and manage social interaction dynamics. Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory is applied to explain the reasons behind these violations, such as efforts to protect face and avoid emotional conflicts. These findings contribute to the development of pragmatic theory and enrich literary studies, especially on how maxim violations deepen characterization and enhance narrative complexity. This study is expected to benefit students, educators, and researchers in linguistics, pragmatics, and literature.
