Abstract

The aims of the research are to find out ontological metaphors in Shakespeare’s proverbs, and to interpret the meaning of those metaphors. The data are taken from the book entitled Shakespeare proverbs inscribed by Mary Cowden Clarke. This research is a qualitative research. In collecting the data, the documentation technique is used in this research. The steps that the researchers have taken in order to collect the data are: reading the Shakespeare proverbs book, marking the proverbs that identified as ontological metaphor, interpreting the meaning of those metaphors. The data are categorized analysed based on George Lakoff and Mark Johnson theory. In analysing the data, the three steps conducted by Miles and Huberman are used in this research, they are: data reduction, data display and data verification/conclusion. The result from this research shows that there are 44 proverbs in Shakespeare Proverb book that contained ontological metaphors. This research is suggested to be a reference for the readers and the other researchers in order learning and interpreting metaphorical expressions in proverbs or the other literature works Keywords: Metaphorical Expression, Proverb

Abstract

This research is mainly to find out the causes of conflict which is reflected in Brown's novel entitled Beauty and the Beast through characters named Belle and the ugly prince. In conducting his research, the authors use qualitative research because the data collected is in the form of words, not numbers. An objective approach is used in analyzing the data. The results of this study found that there are very valuable lessons and knowledge, especially those related to the love relationship between two characters who come from different backgrounds. It is also stated that Belle was finally able to fall in love with the Ugly Prince even though she knew that the prince was not like humans in general. Although there are the differences between them, however in the end the two of them can be together forever because of the power of Belle's love that can break the curse on the ugly prince. Abstract

This study aims to determine the reading comprehension of SMP BEREA Tondano eighth-grade students who use the choral reading approach, as well as the reading comprehension of SMP BEREA Tondano second-grade students who do not use the choral reading technique. Those who are taught using a choral reading technique have superior reading comprehension than those who are taught using a non-choral reading strategy. The research method is experimental, with one experimental and control class using the pre-test and post-test procedure. The population for this study is 20 students from the second class of SMP BEREA Tondano in the year 2020. The findings of this study suggest that students who employ the choral reading approach get higher reading comprehension scores than those who do not. Abstract

The purpose of the research paper, "Enhancing Students' Reading Comprehension Through the Scanning Technique," was to look at the usage of scanning techniques in improving students' reading comprehension at SMP Berea Tondano. This study included twenty-eight eighth-grade pupils. The research approach used was classroom action research. The information was acquired from a variety of sources, including observations at each cycle meeting and a questionnaire. The average scores in cycle two (Y1 = 18,5) were higher than in cycle one (Y1 = 5,95), according to the findings of this study. Furthermore, according to the results of the students' survey, 77 percent of students chose "agree" and 33 percent chose "very agree" to employ scanning approach in comprehending narative texts. This research is expected to aid in the teaching of English. Furthermore, it is advised that future scholars look at the usage of scanning techniques in other books. Abstract

This research aimed at finding out whether the use of songs could increase the students’ mastery of vocabulary or not. In conducting this research, quantitative research was used. The subject of this study was one class of the second grade at SMP Anugrah Tondano that consist of 20 students. The instrument of collecting data was in the form pre-test and post-test. The tests were in the form fill in test with missing words. The result of this research showed that the mean scores in the post-test was higher (70,5) than those of pre-test (40). it could be concluded that, the use of song was effective to increase students’ vocabulary mastery because it could be stimulated students in learning and encourage them to be able to memorize the word. Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the moral values found in Lady Gaga’s selected songs. This research is a qualitative research since the data gathered are in the form of words rather than numbers. In analyze the data; the writer used objective approach because the data were taken only from the work itself, the study only focused on moral values found only in Lady Gaga’s selected song lyrics. The result show that There are four songs that full contain moral values. Born This Way morally tells about originality that needs to be sustained by human. Til It Hapens To You is a song to express the pain of women who become the victims of violation and sexual assault, Grigio Girls is composed to describe the mental strenth of female friends who got cancer and how they keep sustaining their life and Angel Down is about abuse of teenager, comes from the experience when a teenager was shot by neighbour, implying there is no care and protection to teens in their period of growth to future maturity, Til It Hapens To You is mainly about social moral that women needs to appreciated and respected, Grigio Girls delivers individual moral that tells that each individual needs to be strong and brave to face even hardest phase in life in this case cancer as acute disease, and Angel Down conveys social moral value with its concern to teenangers that needs to be given special attention in family and society. Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the E-learning method can be effective in optimizing students' reading comprehension of descriptive text with WhatsApp Application. This research was conducted in class X MIA 1 SMA Negeri 1 Buko in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used one group-pretest-postest design of research with the data analysis were the frequency distribution of scores, mean and standard deviation. The questions from the pretest and posttest used the type of multiple choice questions with questions about the descriptive text. From this result, it was found that the mean of posttest Y = 7.8 with standard deviation Sy = 0.79 was higher than mean score at pretest X = 5.33 with standard deviation Sx = 0.89. It means that students' reading comprehension in descriptive text was higher after treatment at posttest than pretest. So the researcher concluded that the application of the E-learning method through WhatsApp application was effective in optimizing students' reading comprehension of descriptive text. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan bentuk alih kode dan campur serta faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya alih kode dan campur kode dalam interaksi mahasiswa Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Negeri Manado. Di samping itu, penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengembangkan perangkat pola pembinaan pemakaian bahasa Melayu Manado sebagai alat komunikasi mahasiswa. Urgensi secara teoretis penelitian ini adalah dapat memberikan sumbangan pemikiran dalam memperkaya kajian linguistik di bidang sosiolinguistik yang berkaitan dengan alih kode dan campur kode, dapat menambah pengetahuan dan wawasan tentang bagaimana berinterkasi dan bertindak tutur dengan baik. Secara praktis adalah dapat menjadi bahan perbandingan dalam pembelajaran bahasa-bahasa yang diajarkan di FBS Unima, juga sebagai bahan informasi bagi dosen bahasa yang mengajar sosiolinguistik terlebih khusus alih kode dan campur kode, dan faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya alih kode dan campur kode. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) wujud atau bentuk alih kode dalam interaksi/percakapan melalui telepon mahasiswa FBS Unima adalah: alih kode intern atau alih kode dalam bahasa sendiri; dan alih kode ekstern atau alih kode dari bahasa sendiri ke dalam bahasa asing; (2) faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya alih kode dalam interaksi/percakapan melalui telepon mahasiswa FBS Unima adalah: penutur, lawan tutur, perubahan situasi tutur, perubahan dari formal ke informal atau sebaliknya, dan perubahan topik pembicaraan; (3) wujud atau bentuk campur kode dalam interaksi/percakapan melalui telepon mahasiswa FBS Unima adalah: penyisipan unsur dalam bentuk kata, penyisipan unsur yang berwujud frasa, penyisipan unsur yang berwujud baster, penyisipan unsur yang berwujud pengulangan kata, dan penyisipan unsur berwujud klausa; dan (4) faktor-faktor penyebab terjadinya campur kode dalam interaksi/percakapan melalui telepon mahasiswa FBS Unima adalah: faktor kebahasaan, faktor kebiasaan, faktor tidak ada ungkapan yang tepat dalam bahasa yang sedang dipakai, faktor latar belakang sikap penutur, dan (5) faktor topik pembicaraan.

Abstract

This investigation focuses on Agnez Mo's statements. The researchers employ the descriptive approach to conduct this study. Researchers employ the documentation approach to obtain data. Hoffman's theory, included intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and pronunciation modification, is used to examine the data. After evaluating the video, the researchers come up with a total of 87 data. The most common category is intra-sentential, which accounts for 73 % of all data, followed by intra-lexical, which accounts for 14 % of all data, and finally, change pronunciation, which accounts for just 1 % of all data. Agnez Mo employs code-mixing for four reasons, according to the researchers: talking about a specific issue, being enthusiastic about something, interjection, and displaying group identification. The majority of the evidence shows that the parts of speech are nouns.

Abstract

The research analyzes recognation and laudation for Face Saving Act suggested by Leech (1993) dan Yule (1996). The goal of the of the analysis is to give a description of the intention of the speaker or speaker meaning when giving recognation and laudation all at once. This study analyzes whether the laud is used to avoid threats to one's self-image or vice versa. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data analyzed by using pragmatic approach. The speakers, Professor Slughorn, Mrs. Weasley, and Ron Weasley used utterances catrgorized as Recognation and Laudation for Face Saving Act to reveal that recognation and laudation can be used to avoid possible threats to one's self-image. Those utterances of Recognation and Laudation for Face Saving Acti spoken by Professor Slughorn, Mrs. Weasley, Ron Weasley and Harry Potter are used to change the positive self-image from the perceived negative self-image thought by the hearer in this conversation.
