Abstract

This study describes the impact of patriarchal culture on the main character in the short story The Yellow Wallpaper. The concept of patriarchy reflects a social system in which dominance and privilege are primarily held by men, thus bringing significant implications to women's lives. Through narrative analysis, this research reveals the dominance of the main character, John, as the main control in the narrator's life and the excessive focus on domestic life that inhibits women's freedom. This research uses descriptive qualitative methodology with Spradley's data analysis technique, grounded in Walby's patriarchy theory, to identify patriarchal elements in the story and analyze their impact. The results show that patriarchal culture creates limitations on women's freedom and autonomy, detailing the suppression of individual freedom, reliance on male authority, distrust of women's experiences, and restrictions of gender stereotypes. Overall, this short story provides a clear picture of the negative impact patriarchal structures have had on women's lives over the years. Abstract

This article discussed the form of speech acts and language politeness in interaction among residents by focusing on the speeches containing the words "izin (permission)" and "mohon izin (I beg your permission)". Not only for asking permission, these words are used in various speech acts. The data for this study were taken from written conversations among residents through WhatsApp group application. The data were collected using documentation and interview. Then, the data were analyzed using the pragmatic equivalent method. The results of data analysis showed that the words "izin" and "mohon izin" were used in various speech acts, namely assertive, directive, commissive, declarative, and expressive. These words were the embodiment of negative politeness strategies by trying as little as possible to violate the negative face of the interlocutor. The forms of speech in junior and senior resident interactions used a combination of positive politeness strategies and negative politeness strategies. The use of these words was due to the desire to speak politely and to follow the prevailing customs. This study implied the importance of speaking politely in accordance with the customs or conventions that apply to certain communities.Keywords: pragmatics, politeness, residents, speech acts

Abstract

This study aims to identify the strategies of drilling and creative tasks used by a teacher and how the teacher applies these strategies to motivate students to speak in class. A qualitative research design was used to answer this study's questions. To collect the data, this study used interviews and classroom observations as the instruments. The participant in this study was one of the English language teachers in SMK Sehat Insan Perjuangan Mojoagung Jombang, where the teacher has been teaching for five years. The results indicated that the teacher used drilling and creative tasks with songs booming on TikTok and other social media related to materials containing moral values to motivate students to speak in class. The use of drilling as a teaching strategy was presented by asking students to say the words that had been spoken by the teacher repeatedly. While the creative task as a teaching strategy was depicted by the given stimulus in the form of a task, the students were asked to present the task result in front of the class, and the other were asked to respond. The results show that using drilling and creative tasks as learning strategies can make students more active in speaking, and this was evidenced by those who were usually just silent and passive in the speaking class getting increased confidence, improved fluency, and a greater willingness to get involved in the class.

Abstract

This research focuses on revealing the form, logical meaning, and role of conjunctions from the discourse of presidential candidate Anies Bawedan towards the results of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. The focus of this research is done  by using a discourse analysis approach through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics, especially on conjunctions. The conjunction theory used belongs to Martin and Rose in Wiratno. The paradigm of this research is qualitative research because the nature of reality of this research is plural and constructed holistically based on its context. The data in this study were collected using purposive sampling technique. The method used in this research is the listening method (accessing and watching a video on YouTube entitled “Pesan Anies Baswedan Usai Kalah Quick Count, Minta Pendukung Relawan Lawan Kecurangan" uploaded on the MerdekaDotCom YouTube channel), with a follow-up technique, namely the note-taking technique by transcribing Anies Baswedan's oral speech in the video. The data analysis procedure of this research uses the discourse analysis model through description, interpretation, and ends with explanation. The results of this study show that 1) the external conjunction of addition is more often used by Anies Baswedan to expand events (ideology), 2) the internal conjunction that Anies often uses is the internal conjunction of inferential consequence to conclude the logic built previously. Abstract

Congklak is a local culture that can be utilized as BIPA teaching material. There needs to be research on BIPA teaching materials regarding the game of congklak with local wisdom content that can be integrated with religious moderation. Therefore, researchers are interested in conducting research related to the traditional game of congklak which is associated with the principles of religious moderation in BIPA learning conducted at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta.  This research aims to examine the utilization of traditional games based on local wisdom and religious moderation as teaching materials. This research method uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data in this study are local wisdom-based materials using the traditional game of congklak with data sources in the form of documents and several references relevant to the research. The results showed that the conventional congklak game could be used as a fun and effective teaching material for BIPA learning because, in addition to being used as an introduction to Indonesian culture.
