Abstract

; "> In the time of war, people usually migrate from troubled places to the safe and sound cities, promising a better life. However, the position of cities as a promising space is questionable. It is due to the close relation between city utopia andcolonial city. In fact, there are indications of colonial continuation through industrialization which ends up to domination inmany aspects; economy, social, and cultural. One of postcolonial novels written by a diaspora writer, Khaled Hosseini, takesup a theme of migration from a city (Kabul) in a troubled country, Afghanistan, to a city (Fremont) in a more stable country,America. Sara Upstone’s method of reading on spatial politics in postcolonial novels is used here to read how Fremont isconstructed in the novel and the spatial respond occurred. The analysis showed that Khaled Hosseini’s construction uponFremont is that utopia is denied from the beginning of the novel. Fremont becomes oppressive space and yet, it offers possibilitiesfor spatial responds such as displacement and carnivalisation to occur. These are strategies used by those who are subjected tooppression in the city space. Keywords: City space, postcolonial, spatial respond.

Abstract

This study tries to reveal the backlash contained in Habiburrahman El Shirazy’s novel, Cinta Suci Zahrana. The novel is mostly viewed as promoting feminist values in which the main character is fighting for her dream in education. However, it carries backlash, which is defined as a counter assault toward woman’s progress. In Faludi’s theory, backlash, taking form in myth constructed by patriarchal culture, is used to spread believes that progress women made cause only misery. It is trying to put woman back to inferiority by showing that what they are trying to achieve can make them suffer. This sudy investigates whether the ideas containing backlash appear in Habiburrahman’s Cinta Suci Zahrana. By using qualitative methods and deconstruction reading, this study reveals a discourse that seems to be about women’s struggle, yet carries backlash which takes a form of consequences of the struggle. The result shows that there are backlash ideas taking form as consequences the main character, Zahrana, has to suffer because of her persistence in pursuing her study. Revealing the backlash and how it is presented, this study offers different point of view, not from religious context but limiting the discussion in cultural context. The result is expected to promote critical reading and becomes a contribution to research about backlash.

Abstract

The demand for domestication and localization of children’s literature compels translators to not only translate the texts but also transadapt them. Significant problems arise when the texts have to fit the cultures and religions of the target users. This qualitative study attempts to address this issue. Gathering teachers of Taman Pendidikan Al Qur’an (TPQ) or Qur’an study club for Muslim children in the Greater Boyolali area of Indonesia, children’s literature translators, and TPQ students in a Focus Group Discussion, we investigated the strategies of transadapting fables in English into Bahasa Indonesia with Islamic values as the core teaching along with the impacts ensued. Through the FGD constructed based on the purification strategy by Klingberg (1986), translation as adaptation and selection by Gengshen (2003), children picturebook translation by Oittinen (2000), narrative connectedness by Christman (2004), proairetic decoding by Nikolajeva (2010), and skopos by Reiss and Vermeer (2014), paratextualization, insertion, and bleaching strategies are constructed. Paratextualization adds clickable religious comments on the digital versions of the fables. Insertion adds religious lessons within the text. Bleaching refines any expressions considered unfit for the target religious values. These strategies trigger an impact called drifting. To reveal the extent of faithfulness, we constructed a drifting-level assessment. This assessment enables translators to reveal whether a transadapted children’s literature is still on track, slipped, or out of track. The study finding is expected to fill up the theoretical absence of transadaptation strategies and drifting level assessment. Its practical nature also brings benefits for children’s literature translators and TPQ teachers.

Abstract

Abstract

This study describes the impact of patriarchal culture on the main character in the short story The Yellow Wallpaper. The concept of patriarchy reflects a social system in which dominance and privilege are primarily held by men, thus bringing significant implications to women's lives. Through narrative analysis, this research reveals the dominance of the main character, John, as the main control in the narrator's life and the excessive focus on domestic life that inhibits women's freedom. This research uses descriptive qualitative methodology with Spradley's data analysis technique, grounded in Walby's patriarchy theory, to identify patriarchal elements in the story and analyze their impact. The results show that patriarchal culture creates limitations on women's freedom and autonomy, detailing the suppression of individual freedom, reliance on male authority, distrust of women's experiences, and restrictions of gender stereotypes. Overall, this short story provides a clear picture of the negative impact patriarchal structures have had on women's lives over the years. Abstract

The article studied mother church-daughter church selfness and otherness with respect to American identity and new religious movements (NRMs). It examined the coexistence of the American self and Burundi internal other in the construal of mission in Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) global movement. The research material object was The Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal. Center-periphery shifts were explored in one English hymn and its Kirundi translation. Against the backdrop of social constructionism, a descriptive qualitative method based on Kristeva’s theory of signifying process and notion of herethics was used. The theory was supplemented by the notions of social semiotic by Halliday and ethical filter by House. The primary data sources included the hymns “Here Am I, Send Me” and “Nimwumv’ijwi rya Yesu”. Secondary data sources included books and articles pertaining to the topic at hand. The research advances transnational American studies by applying social constructionism to explore the translation of American religious texts outside the United States. It was found that a peripheral other anchored on Burundi SDA tradition was intercalated in the construction of American self-missional identity. The alterity decontextualized the missionary reality and social relations from hegemonic and nationalistic beliefs. Additionally, the translational marginal representation destabilized the taints of mythic innocence and manifest destiny and minimized elements suggesting transcendentalism and capitalism.

Abstract

The development of information technology has led an era called post truth, when a particular viewpoint is published, accepted as true, and causes other alternative truths to be rejected. It is important for digital citizen to be aware of the existence of such phenomena. This research aims at revealing the perspective of university students semester 6 at English Letters program, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta on post truth phenomenon emerging though social media as reflected in two films, Missing and Don’t Look Up. Using reader response approach and McIntire’s theory about post truth, the finding shows that students can generally notice post truth phenomenon in the society and are able to analyse how post truth are circulated. From the last steps of the research, it can be seen that more than half of the students demonstrated a critical and neutral stance, while the rest showed indifference, arguing that they did not know the person involved in the news. Meanwhile, most students showed greater concern and critical thinking when responding to the global issue presented in Don’t Look Up. This indicates that, in general, students demonstrated the necessary attitude—being critical and evaluative of the narratives circulating in the digital platforms.
