Andalas International Journal of Socio-Humanities (AIJOSH)
Andalas International Journal of Socio-Humanities (AIJOSH) is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian Masyarakat (LPPM) Universitas Andalas, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. It invites original articles on various issues within marginal life in socio-humanities perspectives, which include but are not limited to the disciplines of philosophy, literature, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, history, cultural studies, philology, the arts, and library and information science focusing on Indonesian studies and research. AIJOSH seeks to publish a balanced mix of high-quality theoretical or empirical research articles, case studies, review papers, comparative studies, exploratory papers, and book reviews. All accepted manuscripts will be published online. AIJOSH invites original articles on various issues within marginal life in socio-humanities perspective, which include but are not limited to philosophy, literature, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, history, cultural studies, philology, and arts, such as: (1) Marginal movements and minority struggles; (2) Endanger languages; (3) Minority languages and culture; (4) Education in minorities and marginalized communities and groups; (5) Isolated communities and groups; (6) Social and political repression; (7) Race, gender, and discrimination; (8) Political exclusion.

<![CDATA[Doenia Baroe Magazine (1930) is a press media of Peranakan Chinese that contains a lot of literature from various genre. The purpose of this study is to explain themes, forms and orientation of Peranakan Chinese’s literature, so that might explain author’s idea of literary works.Literature from Doenia Baroe Magazine has become the overview of history of literature that written by Peranakan Chinese that use historical methodology. Chinese literature in Doenia Baroe Magazine are influenced by the identity tendency as Chinese people which brings out rendering literary works. Literature from Doenia Baroe Magazine are adaptive to the modernity of colonial environment without needed to remove their ancestral heritage. Literary works in Doenia Baru Magazine has various genres such as short story, feuilleton and poem that implicitly show the author’s new world. Peranakan Chinese’s literature has not just become the social reflection but also implies political identity of the era.The result of this study, the beginning of chinese’s literature is relevant with mentality of the era that affects the author’s idea.]]>

<![CDATA[The ASEAN Charter itself has been recently effective on 15th December 2008 after going through the ratification of the ASEAN state members that have ratified a charter that makes the regional bloc into an "legal" institution (Legal Personality) for the first time. As we know the relationship among ten ASEAN state members does not always work smoothly. Sometimes disputes arise also where the most frequently occurring case is concerned to the regional border or annexation of Malaysia-Singapore about the regional annexation of Batu Pateh, Thailand-Cambodia border as a seizure and the other border areas. Particularly in the sea region a dispute is often occurred among ASEAN state members since at some certain marine areas it is still not yet clear about the borders of its territory. This has resulted in overlapping claims among these countries. It influences the fishing areas where the fishing boats and fishermen would be considered illegal fishing when crossing the boundaries of sea claimed by a country. Though the sea areas are not yet clear about the ownership. Eventually it became a dispute among ASEAN state members. Hence, it takes ways of resolving disputes among ASEAN state members. In this case, the ASEAN Charter contains the methods for settling disputes among ASEAN state members. Indonesia itself is one of ASEAN state members which has sea border with some ASEAN state members which also have sea dispute. Therefore, Indonesia also participated and signed the agreement and will also be bound at later by the ways set out in the ASEAN Charter.]]>

<![CDATA[Language usage has functions to express ideas, and simultaneously can promote the speakers’ identities and social status. Identity markers such as race, gender, class and ethnicity have important roles to choose language used. This paper explores the correspondence between language, identity and social status as exposed in a classic film entitled “Guess who’s coming to dinner tonight” released in 1967. The utterance of the characters in the movie will be analyzed in order to illustrate the vital role of language as a part of promoting the speaker's identity and social status. The study also emphasizes language choice, such as specific vocabulary, and share attitude when discussing a sensitive topic. As a finding, there are significant points that language use inevitably promotes the speakers' social identity due to their academic backgrounds and beliefs.]]>

<![CDATA[The Malayonesian cosmological doctrines highlighted here are based on the study of the five Malay inscriptions dated 5th century to 14th century A.D, a traditional Malay folklore on cosmology compiled by Abdullah (1984), and a well known best seller Malay manuscript entitled Taj al-Muluk edited by Syaikh Ismail al-Asyi (1893). We find that the Malayonesian cosmology changes as the people change their religion successively from Hindu to Buddha and to Islam as such that their cosmology became a syncretism of Hindu-Buddha cosmology and Islamic cosmology (after 13th century A.D). But in the second part of the 20th century, the Muslims through out the world began to rediscover their cosmology in relation to a much more pure Islamic cosmology. As a result, a substantial portion of Malayonesians become dualistic or syncretic in their cosmology. Then toward the end of the 20th century came a very powerfull Western cosmology invaded the Muslims thought through economics and malitarism as such that their belief in Islamic cosmology has to accommodate the Western cosmology as well and hence the syncretic Hindu-Buddha-Islamic cosmology became less prominent. A new relativistic dualism, namely a parallel recognition in both the Islamic and the Western cosmologies appeared in Malayonesian cosmology.]]>

<![CDATA[The current article discuss short description of language and ecology, or ecolingusitcs in regard to the language and social change. The article discuss the concept of ecolingustics and some approach to the study. Then, we discuss how the change of ecology and ecosystem affect the language, especially regarding language vitality. The paper also provide some examples of agricultural lexicon that rarely used due to the change of agricultural system. There some aspect that affect the language change, including language contact, environment change, language standardization, and the attitude of the speaker.]]>
