Abstract

One of the problems in developing Nyawai plants is the attack of snail pests Achatina fulica (Ferussac, 1821) at seedling level of the plants. Plant damage caused by these pests is quite large and causes seedling death. One of the control efforts that can be done is utilizing biomaterials which have molluscicidal properties (can kill mollusks). This study aimed to determine the toxicity of some extracts of biomaterial to control Achatina fulica (Ferussac, 1821) pests. The research was conducted on a laboratory scale. The study used a factorial random design with 3 replications. The treatment consisted of four biomaterials namely sembung (Blumea balsamifera), gadung (Discorea hispida), tuba (Derris eliptica and betel nut (Areca catechu) with each concentration of 10.25.50 g/l. Each concentration used 4 snails as a test sample. The parameters observed were snail mortality, and Lethal Concentration (LC50 and LC95). The results showed that the gadung tuber extract had the highest toxicity as indicated by mortality of 75 % and the lowest LC95 value of 80.63 g/l. While the lowest toxicity is betel nut with mortality of 49.75 % and the highest LC95 value is 567.75 g/l. The Toxicity of tuba, pinang, and sembung are highest on 50 g/l concentration, excepted the gadung extract. In gadung extract, the highest toxicity was obtained on 10 g/l concentration. However, the application was consideration to the attack intensity of Achatina fulica (Ferussac, 1821) because the toxicity effect of biomaterial pesticide was slower than chemical molluscicide.Keywords: Achatina fulica (Ferussac, 1821), biomaterial, concentration, toxicity

Abstract

Most of  non timber forest product (NTFP) utilization taken from natural forests which decrease on productivity annually, including tengkawang producer species which taken from West Kalimantan natural forests. This condition needs an effort to preserve those species from natural population utilization through plantation forest development that require spesific strategy. This study was part of breeding strategy of shorea species producing tengkawang which aimed to species identify and seedling growth evaluation used genetic material from 2 (two) population from West Kalimantan. The research was arranged in 2 (two) steps, i.e.1) species identification used morphology characteristic difference, and 2) seedling growth evaluation (height,diameter,sturdiness). Seedling growth evaluation was arranged in RCBD, with 5 plot (combination of species and source population), contained 25 seedlings and 4 replications (blocks). The result showed that seedlings of shorea species producing tengkawang, i.e. S.stenoptera,  S.macrophylla, and S.gysbertsiana can be different from its stipulae morphology characteristic. Growth of 10 months shorea species producing tengkawang seedlings were significantly different on height and sturdiness. Seedlings height were 67,19 – 88,79 cm, seedlings diameter 9,65 – 10,33 mm and sturdiness 7 – 9,21 in range. The best seedling growth was S.stenoptera and S.macrophylla from Gunung Bunga, West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Langusei (Ficus minahassae (Teysm.et.Vr.) Miq) is one of the endemic flora of Sulawesi which existence is increasingly threatened. Attempts to maintain the existence of Ficus minahassae species by understanding the cultivation techniques of the langusei species, especially regarding the appropriate germination techniques, need to be addressed. This study aims to determine the level of fruit maturity and the appropriate extraction treatment for the germination of langusei seeds. The experimental design used in this study was a complete randomization design which is arranged in a factorial pattern. The first factor is the classification of the level of seed maturity based on fruit color categories: 1) Orange-brown fruit, 2) Orange-reddish fruit, 3) Red fruit, and 4) Red-black fruit, while the second factor is the fruit extraction treatment which consists of: 1) Extraction with dry wind treatment for 24 hours, 2) Extraction with drying treatment for 12 hours, and 3) Extraction with water treatment for 24 hours. The results showed that the fruit maturity level and the appropriate extraction treatment to produce optimal langusei seed germination were in the orange-brown and orange-reddish fruit (mature fruits prior to ripening) which was soaked in water for 24 hours.

Abstract

The estimation of genetic parameters for stem diameter and plant height of ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri T. et B.) was conducted in a progeny trial in Bondowoso, East Java at the age of 5,5 years. The trial was arranged in an incomplete block design, which comprised of 49 families from three provenances (Batanghari, Berau and Kutai Kertanegara) with 4 replications and single tree plot. Families of Batanghari provenance showed the best growth of stem diameter and plant height compared with another provenance. There was significant difference in plant height between families within provenance, whereas stem diameter was not significantly different both of between provenance as well as between families within one provenance. Non-genetic or environmental factors provide considerable influence on plant growth in the progeny test of ironwood until the age of 5.5 years; it was indicated by the residual variance component. Individual heritability for plant height was considered as high (0.37) and stem diameter was considered as moderate (0.26). There was a strong genetic correlation between the stem diameter and plant height (0.95). This information is very important for future genetic improvement of ironwood.

Abstract

Social Forestry at Java island or known as IPHPS (Permit for the Utilization of Social Forestry) is part of the agrarian reform of the forestry sector which expected to solve tenurial problems and improve forest governance. The successful implementation of this program could not be separated of the roles of stakeholder involved. This study aimed to 1) identified stakeholders and their roles in the implementation of IPHPS, and 2) analyzed the relationships between stakeholders in the implementation of IPHPS. This research was conducted in the KPH Telawa area of Boyolali Regency, Central Java. This research uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data collection was done by observation, interviews, and literature studies. Data were analyzed based on the research objectives at stakeholder analysis conducted by identifying stakeholders and their roles as well as the relationships between them in the implementation of IPHPS. They involved in the implementation of IPHPS at the Telawa KPH included Perhutani (KPH) Telawa, KTH IPHPS holders (Wonomakmur 1, Wonomakmur 2, Wonolestari 1, and Wonolestari 2) LMDH Participants PHBM, BPKH IX, BPDASHL Pemali Jratun, Field Companion, BDK Kadipaten, Forestry Foundation, NGO Rejo Semut Ireng, PSKL, LHK Office of Central Java Province, BPSKL Jabalnusra, Forest Development Financing Center Public Service Agency (P3H-BLU). Each of the above stakeholders has their respective strengths and interests. This affects the pattern of relations between the stakeholders which in turn will determine the results of the program. A good relationship will support the successful implementation of the program while a bad relationship can hamper the implementation of the program.Keywords: analysis, stakeholders, implementation, social forestry

Abstract

Indonesia is estimated to have 14,5 million hectares of karst areas. The characteristic of karst vegetation is specific, one of which is the dominance of small trees. With all of the potency, their vegetation acts as a significant carbon sequester and store it in biomass. This study aims to estimate and discuss biomass estimation in the karst forest within the Nature Recreational Park of Beriat, a protected area in South Sorong, West Papua. A total of 28 plots were made in the forest using the purposive random sampling method. Tree biomass (DBH ≥10 cm) was estimated using five different allometric equations. The results showed that the biomass was estimated at ca. 264 Mg ha-1 (95 % CI: 135-454 Mg ha-1). While small trees (DBH 10 – 30 cm) only contribute 30 % of the total biomass, about 38 % of the biomass is the contribution of large trees (DBH >50 cm), where Pometia pinnata contributes ca. 39 % of the biomass at plot-level. The use of various allometric equations results in different biomass estimates and biases with deviations ranged from -14.78 % to +17.02 % compared to the reference equation. Therefore, the selection of allometric equations used must be considered carefully to reduce uncertainties in biomass estimation.Keywords: allometric model, carbon, climate change, REDD+, specific wood density

Abstract

Red Jabon is priority species that projected to be developed in plantation forests of North Minahasa Regency. Red Jabon is can adapt well various environmental conditions. The natural habitat of the red Jabon in North Sulawesi region was known in North Bolaang Mongondow. This study aimed to compare the growth of red jabon at the age of  1 year in North Minahasa Regency and North Bolaang Mongondow. The experiment was conducted in two (2) locations i.e. in Talawaan Village (North Minahasa Regency) and Nunuka Village (North Bolaang Mongondow). Two independent samples t test was conducted to determine the differences in height and diameter growth parameters at two test sites.The results showed that there was no difference in the growth of red Jabon between North Minahasa and North Bolaang Mongondow. The average height and diameter of red Jabon in North Minahasa Regency is at 215.84 cm and 4.34 cm, while the same parameters of North Bolaang Mongondow amounted to 231.79 cm and 4.14 cm. The development efforts on the plantations of red Jabon North Minahasa Regency need to be improved because of the environmental conditions in this region is very suitable for the growth of red Jabon.

Abstract

Utilization of seeds storage results in decreased plant productivity. The increase can be used by treating seeds before planting through the technique of invigoration. This purpose of the study is to assess the effectiveness of invigoration methods using polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) and ultrafine bubbles (UFB) to improve viability and vigor of sengon seeds (Falcataria moluccana). Seed agieng using 96 % ethanol was carried out to obtain the diversity of seedlot viability as the materials for testing the effectiveness of invigoration treatments. A complete random design was used to test the effectiveness of 5 invigoration treatments, i.e., seed without invigoration treatment, soaking in PEG 6000 -0.8 MPa, soaking in PEG 6000 -1.2 Mpa, soaking in UFB water injected by environmental air, and soaking in UFB water injected by oxygen 99 %, with soaking time is 24 hours for each treatment. Seed agieng resulted three classes of seed viability, i.e. 62 % (initial seed), 83 % (seed agieng for 30 minutes) and 57 % (seed agieng for 60 minutes). In the condition of seed germination before treatment (DBA) 57 % and DBA 62 %, invigoration treatments were significantly affected on seed germination capacity, but not significantly different in DBA 83 %. The soaking treatment of UFB injected by oxigen 99 % was able to improve the germination parameters (germination capacity, germination rate, and vigor index) on the sengon seeds with DBA 57 %. For seeds with DBA 62 %, the soaking treatment in UFB injected by environmental air was provided the best germination capacity, T50, and vigor index. The treatment of UFB injected by oxygen 99 % was more effective to improve the seed with very low viability and vigor (DBA 57 %). In general, improving of seed viability and vigor is more effective by using UFB than PEG 6000.Keywords: deterioration, Falcataria moluccana, invigoration, PEG 6000, UFB, viability, vigor

Abstract

The aims of this study was to identify the species and describe the morpohology of roosting tree used by sampiri colonies. The research was conducted form February to May 2014. Direct observation and recording morphology characteristic of the roosting tree were used as methodology. Data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively and then displayed in the form of images and tables. There were six sampiri colonies  using different roost trees. The roost trees were gehe (Pometia corriacea Radkl), binsar (Ficus variegata Blume), lawean (Sterculia sp.), dominated by gehe.

Abstract

Maleo birds (Macrocephalon maleo) generally have habitats in forests near hot springs, but in East Luwu Regency their habitat is found on the shores of Lake Towuti. It is suspected that the habitat of maleo birds at the site has different characteristics. This study aims to identify the vegetation characteristics of maleo bird habitat in the sleeping area and tread where to lay eggs. Vegetation analysis was carried out by purposive sampling with a plot size of 20 m x 20 m in the sleeping area, and 5 m x 5 m in the laying site where the egg-laying was located. The data collected are the name of the type, diameter, the individual number of trees, poles, stakes, and seedlings. The results showed that in sleeping areas, macadamia hildebrandii trees have the highest INP values. Macadamia hildebrandii fruit is thought to be one of [1]the feeds for Maleo birds. In egg-laying habitats, Imperata cylindrica has the highest INP compared to other types. On the tread of the egg-laying nests can be seen maleo birds eating grass grains. There are differences in ecological index [2]values found in sleeping habitats, namely H'= 2.24 (medium), Dmg= 3.02 (low), and E= 0.81 (high). However, in egg-laying habitats, the Ecological Index values found were H'= 0.62 (low), Dmg= 0.93 (low) and E= 0.30 (low). The discovery of maleo birds in Lake Towuti TWA makes the area one of the remaining in situ habitats in South Sulawesi and can be a consideration for the government to maintain and preserve it.Keyword: Lake Towuti, composition, vegetation, habitat, maleo birds
