IBDA`: Jurnal Kajian Islam dan Budaya focuses on the study of Islamic culture that developed in society, as well as the culture that developed in Muslim societies. The scope of the study includes: a) Beliefs system in Islam, b) Ideas of Muslim scholars, c) Ritual system in Islam, d) Islamic institutions and organizations, e) Traditions or customs in Islamic society, and f) Literature and Islamic arts. IBDA`: Jurnal Kajian Islam dan Budaya aims to build a comprehensive understanding of Islamic norms in religious texts and their realization in social life. If the author comes from Indonesia, please submit articles in Indonesian. After the article has accepted to publish by the Ibda Journal Editorial Board, the writer of the article must be willing to follow the rules for translating the article into English with the translator specified by the Ibda Journal.

Abstract

This article describes the boarding school culture which focuseson the relation among Islamic scholar, students at Muslim school, andkitab kuning. The data colleting method which is used in this researchare observation, interview and documentation. This article shows thatthe soul of Islamic boarding school is the Islamic scholar and the supportingfactors are students and kitab kuning. This combination is inseparable.The Islamic scholar responds the modernity by teaching that holybooks in some levels based on the students’ ability.

Abstract

This article shows the unique tradition at Islamic boarding schoolwhich is always interesting to dicuss. Many prominent people were bornand come from boarding schools. Meanwhile, nowadays there are somecritiques toward this institution related to its polarization. It could beunderstood as a way to face the social changes and modernisation. Thiscondition, influence its existence, dynamics, and institution’s role. Bydoing a library research about pesantren history, the writer beleives thatpesantren would be able to survive without losing its identity.

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes in]tegrity of school and boardingschool cultural system. The data is collected using observation, interviewand observation. In Gontor Boarding School, the students studyseveral subjects which are combined with religious knowledge. The boardingschool itself designs the learning system as a tool by giving someobligation to the students.

Abstract

Locality is the closest entity toward the society. Moreover in Indonesia,this problem should be located as the stepping stone to view howthe people live, their need, and the reason why do they live in such way.This existence relates each other forming a civil society. This article discussesthe relationship between religion and society as an important factorwhich influences much on the Islamic scholars’ position and all theiractivities in the society. In traditional Javanese society, the Islamic scholarsare more positioned as having a strategic social function in a society.

Abstract

Science dichotomy in the Islam is a long-standing theory and practice.If we read the history, Muslim authors excel in various fields of science.Therefore emerge the spirit of reform of Islamic education, includingthe education system of pesantren. Without mastering science andtechnology, Muslims will remain marginalized in the dynamics of modernsociety. By bringing science, technology, and information to the world ofpesantren, negative impacts can be fixed. When the third "ruler" was heldby the faithful, it is hoped the friendly and peaceful world.

Abstract

Democracy here is not democratization as governance system,but democracy as spirit confession to the plural reality, including in Islamicstudies. Truly, undeniable that indoctrination approach have to beused in Islamic studies because with this approach Islamic values whichhave been believed the truth can be inculcated, so that every Moslem canlive as according to this values. It doesn’t mean that democratic approachmodel which emphasize at the process and reasoning cannot be appliedin Islamic studies. Herewith, Islamic studies traditions will always criticalanalyzed, so that will protected from intellectual saturation process (intellectualsuicide). With democracy principle, pesantren as entrance ofIslamic education system shall be always open to apply the good democratizationideas, in leadership style, even more in Islamic studies.

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes the business tradition in Islamicboarding school as an alternative economics empowering for theschool and its society. The data is collected by observation, interviewand documentation. This study shows that Mamba’ul Ulum boarding schoolcould preserve its life by eco-protective development, e.g. animal husbandry,farming, and cooperative development. Those three activities havea powerful basic in its neighborhood.

Abstract

This article describes a discourse and a Islamic- nation culturaldevelopment in pesan Trend Ilmu Giri Yogyakarta community. The datais gained by observation, interview and documentation. The subject ofthis research are the Islamic scholars and the congregation. The data isanalyzed using sociological and pedagogic approach. This article showsthat the congregation are encouraged to see, listen, and feel somethingdifferent from their culture. This is an important media to create a newmind-set to accommodate the differences in an Islamic - nation frame.

Abstract

This article discusses and analyzes the wisdom in Islam tradition,the juridical implementation and the application of law on protecting theenvironment in Indonesia. The Islamic tradition emphasizes on man’ mainduty; serve the God by keep and protect His creature. The data are collectedby documentation method and they are read by historical analysisand transcendence-structuralism. This article shows that the environmentparadigm and ideology is based on affection principle (rah}mah). The loveto nature in Islamic tradition is brought into reality by harmonizingbehaviour (tawa>zun), between personal right and environment’s right. Manmay take advantages from the nature but in a good way. Muslims still on‘pseudo-love’ condition because they still give priority to themselves onobeying the law.

Abstract

The disasters that are related to heavy rain such as flood, landslideand dry climate especially in Central Java are problems which need solutions.This article tries to explore the myth to preserve water resource asa local wisdom in Sempor society in Kebumen regency. This article usesHomo Ecologus and Cultural Identity approach to understand the object.Based on that opinion, it is found that the myth is rooted in the value andpoint of view of Sunan Buyut Saringan who always emphasized on thankfulnessof everything that has been given by God.
