Abstract

Writing proficiency is a fundamental language skill crucial for ESL students. To achieve this, they should acquaint themselves with the fundamentals of grammar to produce well-written essays. The grammatical accuracy of written compositions contribute to the comprehensibility of the ideas presented by students. Therefore, language teachers are expected to teach and provide them with sufficient lessons and exercises related to writing. This study aimed to identify and analyze the committed grammatical errors of students in their essays. Fifteen essays from students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Saint Anthony were the focus of this study. The research methods employed in this study are quantitative and qualitative research methods. To identify the grammatical errors committed by the students, error analysis was employed. The results revealed that the top errors identified in the essays were related to capitalization, punctuation, word selection, verbs, pronouns, and sentence structure while the common characteristics of the errors made by the students were omission and misformation. The findings of this study suggest that ESL teachers can use the identified errors to help students improve their

Abstract

This research aimed to decode Filipino representations from the videos of Project Nightfall, a social media channel with millions of followers all over its social media platform that produces videos relative to society’s interest. The rising numbers of Vlogs associated with Pinoy contents produced by foreigners from different social media channels urged the study to work on identifying how Filipinos are represented in Vlogs from the point of view of these social media content creators. The study used Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Framework of Critical Discourse Analysis with three fundamental stages in the study of discourse: the Description or the study of the properties of text, the Interpretation of discursive practices, and the Explanation that deals with Social Practice Analysis. The research selected three videos from the Facebook Page of Project Nightfall. Relevant texts were extracted from the manual transcripts for the analysis. From the research findings, the text is observed to have produced description, assertion and affirmation in the most parts which demonstrates a social practice of promoting culture. There are few numbers of negative Filipino representations depicted from the text including how Filipinos are represented to be financially and emotionally struggling. Filipinos are seen as providers, and described short in height. On the other hand, Filipinos are represented to be selfless, compassionate, resourceful, respectful, expressive, optimistic, bubbly, culture-bound, have active lifestyle, have values of teamwork and spirit of community. Filipinos are also defined as artists, singers, and sports lover from the context of the videos selected.

Abstract

More and more linguists are becoming interested morphology, particularly in dialectal morphology. A solid theory of word production is a prerequisite for the development of any comprehensive theory of language. However, there are a number of unresolved issues that render any morphological theory weakness due to the lack of evidence-based solutions as some of these issues can be essential to the theory. The acquisition and learning of word formation rules is something else that concerns us, beside tongue morphology awareness, instructions, strategies, and interpretation analysis. As part of the search for papers for this review, a number of electronic databases were scrutinized. All descriptors were used in combination with morphology, awareness, instruction, strategies, and analysis. Ancestral searches were also carried out, and content analysis has been employed developing a goal interpretation of any type of morphological content. Results and discussions are derived in this regard from the researcher’s own undertaking as well as that of other scholars. It is plainly evident that morphology is a bough of linguistics after gathering a total of thirty-four (34) explorations from numerous abstractions and fieldworkers. The study and modeling of language structure are major constituents of linguistics in all of its manifestations, historical evolution, and forms.

Abstract

When a poet writes a poem, it may be influenced by his / her feeling and situation. Similarly, based on Emily Dickinson’s biography, it is told that since 1874 she spent her life in mourning because of several deaths. Emily's father died in 1874, Samuel Bowles died in 1878, J.G. Holland died in 1881, her nephew Gilbert died in 1883, and both Charles Wadsworth and Emily's mother died in 1882. For over those few years, many of the most influential and precious friendships of Emily's passed away (http://www.edwardslys.com/dickinson.htm). The situation that happened to her absolutely influenced her feeling. Then, it may give her a way to the more concentrated obsession with death in her poetry. This study shows influence of Emily Dickinson’s life background on the concept of death found in her poem “Because I Could Not Stop for Death”. The poem is influenced by the poet’s life background as follows;  Her religious background includes Calvinism, Puritanism and Transcendentalism give influence to her perception of death.

Abstract

Currently, illicit relationships such as those of same-sex couples have special symbols that they use as their identity. These symbols are created by their community. We can see directly and analyse their community’s symbols through movies. One of them is the gay movie that this research examined, "Boy Meets Boy". This research uses qualitative methods, which are analyzed using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory. This research aims to identify or find gay symbols using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory formulation. This research obtained 3 gay symbols. The symbols obtained is the result of Roland Barthes's semiotic analysis with three meanings, namely denotation, connotation and myth. Denotation is a real (visual) reading of meaning. Connotation is a subjective reading of meaning, while myth is a relationship between meaning and symptoms or phenomena that are believed by many people. The datum is obtained from the scene of non-verbal communication shown by the gay couple in the "Boy Meets Boy" movie. Non-verbal communication in this movie includes physical touch, kissing on the lips, kissing the hair, stealing glances, glances or stares, and intimate relationships. The implications of existing symbols basically do not have any meaning if we do not know the meaning of the symbols. This symbol is closely associated with the LGBTQ+ community. Hopefully, this research can provide knowledge to find out more about this community.
