This qualitative study is designed to find the Acehnese speakers’ attitude in maintaining Acehnese at the eastern coast of Serdang Bedagai Regency. The subjects are thirty intra-marriage Acehnese speakers living long time the districts. Questionnaire is used to find out their daily attitude in communicating and to gather the data about what language they use in the communications and interaction with their husband or wife, children, brothers and sisters, neighbors, and colleagues. Interview is used to find out the positive and negative attitude. These attitudes are influenced by some factors which are analyzed and can be maintained Acehnese at the eastern coast of Serdang Bedagai Regency, living in Acehnese multi-ethnics, use Acehnese in their family every day, and having pride of their own language, use Acehnese to their neighbors and their colleagues. Currently, the existence of Acehnese is the speakers of Acehnese are at the level of safe but in their children or their generation is at the level of unsafe and it leads to the language shift to a dominant language, that is, Indonesian language as well as Malay language and Javanese language or other local language which are the major population, which dominate the use of vernacular. This is due to the weaknesses of vernacular speakers or the loss of belonging to their own language. Key words: attitudes, language maintenance, language shift, maintainability, vernaculars

This study investigates lexical and grammatical metaphors in Newsweek Weekly Magazines. The objectives of the study are to identify what lexical and grammatical metaphors used in Newsweek, to describe the way those metaphors are used, and to explain why the Newsweek use those lexical and grammatical metaphors. A qualitative descriptive research was applied. The data were taken from eight texts published on November and December in 2010. The data were collected by selecting the texts contained the issue of Barack Obama, The President of United States of America because of his visit to Indonesia on November. As the result, the use of lexical and grammatical metaphors has been found in Newsweek. The metaphors in Newsweek realized into four types of lexical metaphors and eight groups data of grammatical metaphor. The Newsweek used more grammatical metaphor than Lexical metaphor in order to make information contained in Newsweek it more coherent and compact, and to help readers more easily understand the information. The objective of this study is to identify levels of language endangerment of BahasaSimalungun (BS), to ascertain the domains which are needed proportionally to be managed by the speakers to maintain and to ascertain the ways can be done by the BSS in maintaining BS. This study was based on qualitative approach. Interviews and questionnaire are used as instrument of data. The data were collected by interviewing 22 Simalungunese comprising of second and first generation. The data were analyzed with reference to the theory six levels of language endangerment by UNESCO and Language Use domain by Fishman.The findings showed (1) BS is in the stage of risk up to nearly extinct, this was caused by intermarriage, residence in non Simalungun family and parent attitudes,(2) BS needs to be proportionally managed because most of them are shy to learn and use BS in their daily life, and (3) 20 options offered to maintain BS and18 options were agreed by using BS in wedding ceremony (family domain), using BS in IKEIS (friendship domain), using BS in Perwiritan (religion domain), learn BS as Mulok (educational domain), and using BS in selling and buying activity (employment domain). The objectives of this experimental research were to investigate whether: 1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using CIRC method was higher than taught by using Jigsaw method. 2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual style was higher than those with kinesthetic style, 3) there was interaction between teaching methods and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. One hundred of 2011/2012 grade X students of SMAN 1 Delitua were selected as sample by applying cluster random sample technique. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. Experimental group 1 was treated by using CIRC method and experimental group 2 was treated by using Jigsaw method. The questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the visual and kinesthetic learning style. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension text was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significance α= 0.05. The result reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using CIRC was higher than that taught by using Jigsaw method, with Fobs= 3.36>Ftab=2.70, (2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual learning style was higher than that with kinesthetic learning style with Fobs= 8.64>Ftable=2.70, (3) there is interaction between teaching method and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs=7.74>Ftable=2.70. The result of Scheffe-Test showed that visual style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using CIRC method while kinesthetic style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using Jigsaw method.

The objectives of this research are to investigate whether: (1) students’ achievement of grammar taught by applying inductive approach higher than taught by applying deductive approach, (2) achievement of grammar of visual learning style students higher than achievement of grammar of auditory learning style students, and (3) there is an interaction between instructional approaches and learning styles on the students’ achievement of grammar. The population was students of Grade X of Vocational High School 1 Beringin Deli Serdang. Based on Cluster Sampling technique, two classes were chosen, namely Grades X1 and X3. The data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA with 2 × 2 factorial design. The result reveals that (1) Students` grammar achievement taught by using inductive instructional approach is higher than that taught by using deductive instructional Approach (81,20 > 72,10), (2) Students with visual learning style have higher achievement in grammar than students with auditory learning style (81,90 > 72) and (3) there is significant interaction between instructional approaches and learning styles on students` achievement of grammar (4.906 > 3.96). Thus, it can be concluded that the application of instructional approaches and learning styles can affect students` achievement in grammar. Keywords: Grammar; Instructional Approach; Learning Styles

The objectives of this study were to identify types of politeness strategies, to examine the differences of politeness patterns used by different gender and to see how the politeness strategies imply in the culture of “indirectness” a culture of Javanese who avoid being direct to utter something which were reflected in Javanese indirect speech acts in request. The approach used in this study are based on politeness theory of Brown & Levinson (1987); Bald-on record, Positive, Negative, and Off Record. This study employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were the transcription of recorded observation and interview using audiovisual recorder in Javanese social interaction in doing business transaction at “PasarRebo”, a traditional market in Deli Serdang, North Sumatera. The politeness strategies used were bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy and negative politeness strategy. Different strategies were performed by different gender; male dominantly used bald-on record strategy while female dominantly used positive politeness strategy. The realization of Javanese indirect speech acts used by female established an indirect correlation to politeness strategies and the culture of “indirectness” in Javanese. The realization of these politeness strategies by the speakers were aimed to minimize Face Threatening Acts to endeavor a harmony in social interaction. This research is aiming at 1) to know the existing phenomena of teaching and learning reading material of English for Nursery Purposes, 2) to find out kinds of reading materials of English for Nursery Purposes are needed by the students at STIKES Sari Mutiara, and 3) to find out a task-based learning reading materials of English for Nursery Purposes design. The research method used is research and development (R&D). The sources of the data are the students, the alumni, and the stakeholders whereas The targeted clients are the students of semester IV STKIES Sari Mutiara Medan. The instrument for collecting data are questionairre, documentation, and in depht interview. The data are analyzed by descriptive analysis.The results show that 1) in general the teaching learning is not optimal yet, particularly the learning materials are not relevant to the students and stakeholders’ need even the adequacy and availability are relatively adequate and available. 2) The students’ need in line with teaching learning reading is oriented in a student center learning, task activities, authentic reading materials, and strucutured essay test. and 3) the physical structure of learning materials consists of the following sections that is Preview, Getting Started, Orientation, Assessment, Related vocabulary Usages. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether: (1) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using SPE is higher than students’ Achievement in Reading comprehension taught by using SQ4R, (2) Reading comprehension achievement of high learning motivation students is higher than reading achievement of low learning motivation students, and (3) There is significant interaction between teaching reading methods and students learning motivation on students reading comprehension achievement. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this research. The first group was treated by using SPE and the second group was treated by using SQ4R. The learning motivation test was conducted for classifying the students upon the high learning motivation and the low learning motivation. The data were analyzed by applying Two-Way ANOVA. The result reveals that (1) students achievement in reading comprehension taught by using SQ4R is higher than that of taught by using SPE, (2) reading comprehension achievement of high learning motivation students is higher that reading achievement of low learning motivation students (3) There is significant interaction between teaching reading method and students learning motivation on students achievement in reading comprehension. Thus, teaching methods and students’ learning motivation significantly affect the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Keywords: Motivation; Reading Comprehension; Teaching Reading Methods

The aims are to find out: 1) the types of code switching used in the Toba Batak wedding ceremony, 2) how the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony, and 3) reason why the participants switch language in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony. The data were obtained from the utterances of participants which contain code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony precisely in Marhaban, replying and exchanging the verses of rhymes, exchanging of Tepak, and upah-upah stages. They were analyzed by using some steps as normally applied in descriptive qualitative method. The instruments of data collection were audio visual recorder. The findings of the study indicate that; a) Three types of code switching found namely intrasentential, intersentential and tag switching b) Participants in Toba Batak wedding ceremony mix some languages based on participants’ tribes which involved in the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony and they also adjust the situation and the condition of the people c) Three reasons of code switching during the process of Toba Batak wedding ceremony namely the differences of family’s tribes, religion factor and place of wedding ceremony be held.
