Abstract

The aims of this study were to describe the kinds of  Conversational Implicarture, to explain the ways of performing implicature  and to describe the contex of implicature by Arsy And Arsya in Youtube channel. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were the utterences of  Arsy and Arsya in Youtube Channel. The data analyzes by using theory of conversational implicature.the result of this study were 1) the kinds of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya  found in the text, they are Qualitative Maxim, Quantitative Maxim, Relevant Maxim, and Mannner Maxim. The analysis has found that Quantitative appeares in Arsy and Arsya YouTube Channel. (2)The process of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through politeness strategies. (3) The reasons of the realization of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through the system of tenor formed as [unequal/informal/positive/frequent]. It is found that there are are four. They are involved Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found. Since she give codes to the hearer to get what her intentions, and it sometimes coded by gesture. . While in Arsya’s utterances, the types of politeness implicatures found are three. They are involved Bald on Record,Positive Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found. Abstract

The Purpose of this study are; 1) to examine the existing English speaking materials of Marketing students; 2) to investigate English Speaking material which needed to meet with the marketing students’ need; 3) to develop English Speaking materials for Marketing students based on Content Based Instruction. . This study is descriptive qualitative research. This study inspired of ten stage of Educational Research and Development model by Gall, Gall and Borg, 2003. but in implementing the model is simplified and adapted to Dirgayasa (2011) become four steps: 1) Evaluation and need analysis, 2) designing new material, 3) validating material, 4) revision and final production. The instrument of collecting data was collected by questionnaire, documentation and interview. The source of the data was students of XI Marketing academic year 2018/2019, Marketing teacher, stake holder, alumnus and also syllabus and the existing speaking material used at this time. The result of  this study showed that 86 % students agree that they really need the relevant material which proper to their program and the analysis of the existing speaking materials and the existing syllabus showed that both are less relevant for English speaking skill for Marketing students. From the evaluation research got that learning method which used in the learning process found that it was less relevant. From evaluation research of documentation and interview agreed that the developing of speaking material for Marketing students is needed through Content Based Instruction. The final product of this speaking materials entitled English speaking materials for marketing. Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research deals with The Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Talk Show Program. This research observe the Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program in some episode. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of politeness strategies are used in personal subject pronoun by the interviewees in  Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program, and to investigate politeness strategies used the personal subject pronoun. The data were taken from the episode of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program  in 2018 years. The data were collected by downloading the video of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program from youtube and then were transcribed. The data were analyzed by qualitative research based on interactive model which is created by Miles and Huberman. The result of the research shown the positive and negative politeness are used in Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) by the same person. The same speaker and the same hearer used the politeness dynamically. It depends on topics/ issue whereas they understand or not  in other hand they expert in the material. the researcher found that all types of Politeness Strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) found in the data. The data of Positive Politeness were consisted of 28 lines (42.42%) which was the highest data from other strategies, while Off Record of Politeness Strategies was obtained as much 18 lines (30.30%), then followed by Negative Politeness of Politeness Strategies was obtained as much 17 lines (22.73%), and the last was Bald on Record with 3 lines (4.55%). Keywords: Politeness strategies, Pronouns, Talkshow Program

Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Javanese teenagers of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. It uses qualitative research design with a single case study to gain an understanding on this study. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to desescribe what language maintenance do the Javanese people of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. The subjects were 15 participants of the third generations that have selected as the source of data in this study. The use of instruments in this study were observation,interview and documentation. The observation were used desescribe what language maintenance do the Javanese people of Desa Pamuktaran preserve. The interview was used in depth data. The theories of Fasold, Fishman and Holmes are used in this study. The data were analyzed Miles and Huberman and Saldana’s technique. The data from questionnaire will be analyzed by using the following steps; (1) data reduction, (2) data display, (3) verification and drawing conclusion. There are four types of language maintenance of Javanese language in Desa Pamuktaran they are low maintenance, medium maintenance, strong maintenance and extreme maintenance.Keywords: Language Maintenance, Javanese, Teenagers, Javanese Language

Abstract

In today’s world, shopping on Instagram is quickly becoming the preferred way for consumers to not only learn about new brands and products on Instagram, but also purchase them in just a few simple steps.One of the top issues of online shopping is its security concerns.Online shopping fraud is one of a cybercrime which often occurs lately.  Fraudsters usually manipulate their victims through their language used. In order to manipulate their victim, a fraud should be able to use the speech function or linguistic function in the proper context of conversation to build trust of their victim. This study was aimed at investigating the speech function used by online shopping frauds on Instagram. This research was conducted in a qualitative research. The data were clauses consist of speech functions used by online shopping frauds on instagram. Five chats of online shopping fraudsters with their victims taken from Indonesia Online Shop Blacklist has taken as data sources by using purposive sampling. In order to identify the types of speech functions used by the fraudster, Halliday’s theory of Interpersonal Function was used. The findings showed that the types of speech functions found used by online shopping frauds in instagram are statement, question, command, and minor.  In which statement is more often used by fraudster in instagram, followed by command, question and minor. It indicates that the fraudster use statement for giving information about the product which they sell, they also tend to use statement to answer the questions from the consumer about their product, delivery process, payment method, etc.Keywords: Speech Functions, Fraudster, Instagram, Online Shopping, Discourse

Abstract

Television advertisement has a promotional function as a medium to advertise a product. It implicitly persuades people to create demand of a product that is being advertised. Implicit meaning can be studied with semiotic; it is the theory and study of sign, symbol, and signification as communicative behavior, especially as elements of language or other system of communication. This study is aimed to identify the types of signs of milk television advertisements. The writer focuses on four advertisements of milk products 'Bear Brand Sterilized advertisements, which published on television media since June 2009-2015. The methodology used in this research is qualitative method and the researcher uses semiotics approach of Charles Sanders Peirce. The data of this analysis are phrases, sentences, images, objects, and colors in each advertisement. The writer identifies some signs in each scene of the advertisement. The data are found in 25 in the bear brand advertisements. The result of this study shows that each scene contains signs such as icon,index, and symbol. There are 22 of icons, 8 indexes, and 26 symbols. In the analysis using Charles Sanders Pierce Triadic theory, the writer found that in every advertisement uses signs which consist of representament, object, and interpretant. The combination of the three signs will deliver the meaning of the selected object (advertisement) to the reader. The result of the study shows that the three kinds of signs are used to create clear meanings and both of them have a strong relationship in delivering messages of the products.Keywords: Television Advertisement, Semiotic, Icon, Index, Symbol

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the translation quality in Bound novel. This study followed the theory of Nababan et.al (2012) about the three aspects of translation quality namely (1) accuracy; (2) acceptability; and (3) readability. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the research design. The data of this study were gathered by using the documents and questionnaire by the raters. The results analysis from the raters showed that translation quality in Bound novel were less accurate with the average points around 2.75, acceptable with the average points around 2.92 and readable with the average points around 3.0. Abstract

Indonesia was well known for the variety of tribes, traditional languages, society and culture. It triggered to conduct this research that concerned to social stratification and Karonese register in giving pedah pedah perjabun. The problem of this research was how far the Karonese register change in this modern era or whether there were any differences among society group in Karonese traditional wedding ceremony. Based on this problem, this research aimed to 1) investigate the types of social stratification in traditional wedding ceremony of Karonese, 2) describe the reflections of social stratification toward the Karonese register, and 3) explain Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were taken from Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony and the source of data was Karonese native speaker who involved in traditional wedding ceremony. This research showed that 1) the interaction of Karonese society in traditional wedding ceremony stratifies Karonese people into four divisions. They are kalimbubu and anak beru that categorized as closed social stratification and sembuyak and teman meriah that categorized as opened social stratification, 2) social stratification were reflected through the differences and similarity form of register .Kallimbubu and anakberu used formal register as the most dominant regiser while sembuyak and anak beru  used consultative register as the most dominant, and 3) the cause of Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony was caused by register with reference to field that covered factor of arena and register with reference to tenor that cover formality and status. Keywords: Karonese Register, Pedah Pedah Perjabun; Social Stratification

Abstract

This study deals with the cognitive process by students’ majoring in natural and social science in Writing Analytical Exposition Text. This study attempted to investigate the reasons why the cognitive process happens in writing analytical exposition text the way it does. The data in this study were the students of SMA Nurul Iman from two different majors; they were three students of Natural Science Major and three students of Social Science Major. This study was conducted by using qualitative design of which instrument are both writing test and interview. The research findings show that the cognitive processes of the students of the two majors were different in planning, translating and reviewing. The students majoring in natural and social science write analytical exposition in similarity and different cognitive process. The similarity is that both students majoring write analytical text in terms three stages; planning, translating, and reviewing, and the different are that the two major student perform cognitive process in different stage. The students majoring in Natural Science use the information in the assignment to generate new information then relate it with their experience and they know about the topic to be developed. Abstract

The purpose of this research was to help teachers to enrich their knowledge about Letterland strategies in teaching English vocabulary to young learners. The objective of this research was to investigate the types of problem faced by teachers while using Letterland strategies. This research applied descriptive qualitative design and the data gathered from the sentences of four teachers in Nursery class at a Singapore Pre-School, Medan. The techniques of collecting data were observation and interview. Then, the techniques in analyzing the data were condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were two types of problem faced by all the teachers; an internal disturbance (54.55%),  and an external disturbance (45.45%). It was concluded that Letterland strategies were good for young learners in learning English vocabulary because it provided some fun activities that contained of multi-sensory based learning which they were able to see, hear, do, and touch it.         Keywords: English Vocabulary; Letterland Strategies; Young Learners
