Abstract

Power relationships exists among students in schools which are often characterized by violent and aggressive behaviors. The current study deals with the concept of bullying. In particular, through literature review methodology, it aspires to answer into the following two research questions; ‘what is the evidence for a relationship between aggression and bullying’ and ‘what can be done in order to deal effectively with bullying in schools. Regarding the first research question, there seems to be a close connection between aggression and bullying. Indeed, both proactive and reactive aggression can be found in bullying. Nevertheless, it is stated that while aggression is a normal feeling which should not be suppressed, bullying is socially unacceptable. It can causes hurt to the victim and therefore it must be contemned in the most explicitly way. As for the second research question, whole school policies which take into account the social nature of bullying should be adopted by educators. Moreover, peer mediation schemes are discussed and a balance argument is given for them.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the importance of Self-Directed Learning technique in improving the communication skills in English of students. Sixteen sophomore BS Education majors in English were chosen on purpose. Focus groups were conducted to obtain the necessary information. The analysis of information yielded five themes: increasing language competency, encouraging independent learning, learning through the internet, and becoming more reading focused. Each theme were discussed. It was concluded that regardless of the good implications that Self-Directed Learning brings to learners, the truth remains that students who use Self-Directed Learning requires the guidance and monitoring of teachers in order for students to completely appreciate the significant effects and benefits of the technique. Giving students complete control over their learning can lead to inaccuracy and danger. The results implicate the current situation of COVID 19 where academic institutions are adapting the blended and flexible modalities.

Abstract

The study aims to explore an in-depth analysis of leveraging education through artificial intelligence (AI) virtual assistance among visually impaired learners. The investigation centers on describing the challenges and struggles encountered by visually impaired learners, highlighting the usage of AI virtual assistance, the adaptability of the visually impaired learners, and the enhancement of the curriculum. This study utilized a qualitative case study research design using Braun and Clarke’s (2008) data analysis method to describe an in-depth dissection of a case study involving five visually impaired learners through semi-structured interviews. Findings revealed five themes: (1) barriers in the learning process, (2) essentiality of AI virtual assistants, (3) achieving competence through technology, and (4) inclusive teaching and learning environment. The findings show that this pandemic has brought challenges to visually impaired learners in education, such as personal struggles, insufficiency of resources, and adapting to new learning modalities. However, AI virtual assistance allowed them to explore their potential and help them achieve academic tasks that are generally difficult due to their visual impairment. Researchers recommend improving the teaching and learning of visually impaired students in secondary schools.

Abstract

Τhis study presents an example of an intercultural teaching practice of cultivating of critical thinking and intercultural/ historical literacy in the context of local history learning. The practice was created by the author in the framework of the European eTwinning project “The young time travelers of history” (which was awarded with the Greek National Quality Label and the European one) and was presented as an example of good practice in teacher seminars at the local level. This practice combines a simplified form of De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats with role-playing and brainstorming and emerged from the study of the social-historical background of a primary school multicultural class in which was implemented. Finally, this specific study aims to be an example for the creation of other innovative, alternative teaching practices in local history learning.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine characteristics and predictors of auto stimulatory behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as well as to determine the presence of auto stimulatory behavior exhibited by children with ASD. The sample included 43 participants diagnosed with ASD. The instrument used was Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01, Rojahn et al., 2002), subscale for stereotyped behavior. Our results show that children with ASD from our sample have lower rates of auto stimulatory behavior, with the most common ones being repetitive body movements, arm shaking, bouncing around, running and pacing. The school type has not proven to be a predictor of auto stimulatory behaviors. However, male participants and those with low functioning ASD exhibit more auto stimulatory behaviors than females and those with high functioning ASD. The presence of auto stimulatory behaviors persists through age. Auto-stimulatory behaviors exhibited by children with ASD can be reduced or eliminated, however it is important to use evidence-based interventions with proven benefits for the child. Since stereotypy is usually automatically maintained and therefore is one of the behaviors that is often difficult to reduce, it is recommended that parents are taught on how to implement interventions in their home environment.

Abstract

In this present paper, a comparative study between the Spanish and Swiss primary educational systems took place, investigating whether WebQuests are used in the foreign language lesson for the instruction of critical literacy in multilingual environments. The modern learning environment requires student-centred teaching, with new technologies creating ideal learning conditions which, although they carry many risks, have advantages over traditional ones, creating a lively learning and collaborative environment. In the case of WebQuests, searching for information on the internet ceases to be an arduous process, since it is guided. In addition, it enhances and promotes reflection, critical thinking, creativity, discovery and presentation of new information, delving into real-life issues and situations which are key elements of critical literacy.

Abstract

This contribution intends to propose some reflections on sustainable and accessible educational design, starting from the analysis of today’s educational contexts called upon to promote processes of pedagogical revisitation on the wave of both the profound discomforts and the unprecedented opportunities offered by the pandemic. In the name of the generative gaze that should accompany every process of change between past and future, between awareness achieved and the search for new territories to be explored, the school narrative of a pupil with special needs is proposed, aimed at enhancing the inclusive design interventions concerted and synergic between secondary school, family and out-of-school.
