Abstract

This study explores the impact of microteaching practices on EFL undergraduate students’ teaching skills and self-confidence in preparing to teach English to young learners (TEYL). Conducted with 12 participants enrolled in a TEYL course, the research applied a mixed-methods approach involving pre- and post-tests and thematic analysis of reflective journals. The teaching skills assessed included classroom management, instructional clarity, use of child-centered strategies, and the ability to actively engage young learners. Results showed a marked improvement in both pedagogical competence and confidence following a series of microteaching sessions. Statistical analysis using paired-sample t-tests confirmed significant differences between pre- and post-intervention scores. Qualitative data further revealed enhanced student awareness of effective TEYL practices and growing readiness for classroom teaching. The findings suggest that microteaching is a valuable pedagogical tool, not only for building instructional proficiency but also for developing the emotional and psychological readiness needed to teach young learners. This study highlights the need for experiential learning in TEYL teacher preparation programs.

Abstract

Self-confidence is one of the most essential qualities every individual should possess. A common issue observedtoday is that many adolescents still struggle with low self-confidence in their daily lives. One of the main causesof low self-confidence is the lack of attention to oneself, or in other words, the lack of self-love. Self-love playsa crucial role in enabling individuals to live their lives in a more balanced manner. Loving oneself means valuingone’s well-being and personal happiness. The method used to address this issue is a qualitative approach, inwhich data were collected through literature studies, observations, and interviews with both the target audienceand experts. The findings indicate that individuals with a strong sense of self-love tend to be more confident, less affected by others’ negative opinions, and more capable of facing challenges with conviction. However, selflove also requires support from the surrounding environment, or at least a source of motivation that helpsindividuals rise again. Therefore, an illustrated book on the theme of self-love was designed to provide insightsand enhance self-confidence through the practice of loving oneself. The book contains guidance and methods onhow to manage and cultivate self-love, as many people still lack an understanding of how to implement it intheir lives. Through these illustrations, it is hoped that individuals experiencing self-doubt can learn to applyself-love and overcome their lack of confidence.

Abstract

Although it is most usual to study the shared characteristics of community members, in this paper we instead emphasize the pluralism within a community. The framework within which we will proceed is Explorationism, a perspective that all our knowledge is (so far) less than certain, that all our knowledge is indeed (so far) only partial and only tentative. This perspective will help us better elucidate how pluralism in every community contributes to the community’s vitality and success.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on the pivotal role of analytical thinking in student education, irrespective of the curriculum. Teaching analytical thinking is a vital instructional skill and a foundation of student learning. Instructors should be well-versed in teaching analytical thinking, as it forms the bedrock of critical thinking and problem-solving. Despite not being explicitly listed as one of the seven high-impact teaching practices in undergraduate education by Chickering & Gamson (1987), critical thinking and analytical thinking are frequently cited as Student Learning Outcomes in academic courses and programs in the United States (Grandinetti & Puncochar, 2019; Peñaloza & Puncochar, 2019; Puncochar, Barch, Albrecht, & Klett, 2018). University instructors often claim that they incorporate critical thinking into their teaching to improve student learning outcomes (Janssen et al., 2019). In 2014, Oceans of Data outlined the specific skills and knowledge required to compete in a big-data-centered economy. Analytical thinking ranked highest in both knowledge AND skills. The results were validated by nearly 100 data analyst peers (see Krumhansl, 2016). Although analytical thinking ranked higher than critical thinking in both knowledge and skills, this paper posits that analytical thinking is a necessary precursor to critical thinking and problem-solving.

Abstract

This article analyzes the lyrics and musical composition of a song by the band Perunggu titled “ Ini Abadi ”. Perunggu is known as a viral band that promotes ideas about the urban working class. The lyrics express the grievances of the working class in facing economic realities and the political alienation of power. The context of urban labor is tied to the oppression of time and mental effort, creating a polemic around social and cultural status. This band is recognized as “the office workers’ band,” reflecting a lifestyle that is commonly faced by band members in Indonesia, who juggle two professions: being musicians and holding primary jobs. In the music industry context, the creation and determination of lyrics and musical composition can hold significance regarding the urban societal context. The aim of this research is to dissect the lyrics and musical composition created by the band Perunggu, which represents the urban working class. The approach employs descriptive methods to analyze the song, utilizing theories of popular music analysis and cultural studies. The results indicate that this work represents the identity and anxieties of the urban working class through reflective lyrics and a composition that evokes a collective context of experience, resistance, and solidarity among the urban working class in Indonesia.

Abstract

The phenomenon of raising the One Piece flag, particularly the Straw Hat Pirates' Jolly Roger, in Indonesian public spaces has become a focal point in socio-cultural discussions. Originally a symbol from a Japanese anime, it has transcended its role as mere fandom expression to become a medium for conveying societal aspirations and frustrations, particularly among the younger generation, regarding Indonesia's socio-political realities. This study employs Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to analyze the denotative, connotative, and modern mythic meanings embedded in the symbol. Findings reveal that the One Piece flag not only represents freedom and adventure as in its fictional narrative but also symbolizes resistance against injustice, collective solidarity, and subtle critique of systems perceived as unresponsive to public needs. Social media plays a pivotal role in disseminating and normalizing the flag's new meanings while sparking diverse reactions from the public and authorities. Some view it as a threat to national unity, while others interpret it as a form of free expression and "silent protest." This phenomenon reflects a crisis of trust in national symbols and a shift in collective identity from state-led narratives to pop culture symbols that resonate more with youth aspirations. The study highlights the potential of popular culture as a tool for articulating identity and social change, emphasizing the need for a communicative approach to understand unconventional expressions in the digital era.

Abstract

Moroccan design is known for its distinctive styling characterized by rich ornamentation, geometric patterns, contrasting color schemes, and various combinations of traditional elements with a warm, exotic, yet elegant atmosphere. This study aims to analyze the extent to which Moroccan elements are present in the café and how they influence visitors' spatial experience. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach with field observation techniques, visual documentation, and literature studies on the characteristics of Moroccan interior design. The results of this study indicate that the Moroccan concept applied at Café Nayma is reflected in the use of mosaic patterns, wooden carvings, textured ethnic fabrics, and warm-colored lighting that supports a relaxed and aesthetic atmosphere. Furthermore, the integration of local Bandung elements adds contextual value without diminishing the original cultural nuance. The conclusion of this study asserts that Moroccan-concept interior design can serve as an inspiration in creating a unique and characterful space identity, while also enhancing the attractiveness and comfort for visitors.

Abstract

The topic of Popular culture icons in Heri Dono’s works are essentially not merely depictions or normative representations of characters, but rather spaces where principles and ideologies clash. The simplification of communication forms in response to phenomena is thoroughly woven into symbols and traditional values, serving as a form of resistance against the repressive dominance of global culture. Aesthetic leaps and breakthroughs in the creative ideas are presented through humanistic metaphors, functioning as responses to actual phenomena such as politics, culture, and social issues. These elements seem to lead us into a certain reality and guide us toward a particular perception.

Abstract

The influence of halal labels on consumer purchasing decisions from the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes. Halal labels, which are often found on food and beverage products, have a significant role in shaping consumer perceptions, especially among Muslim consumers. Through Barthes' semiotic approach, the halal label is understood as a sign consisting of two elements: signifier and signified. The signifier is a physical label displaying halal certification, while the signified includes the meaning of halal, hygiene, quality, and religious identity. This analysis is conducted by distinguishing two levels of meaning: denotative and connotative. Denotatively, the halal label indicates that the product meets halal standards. However, at the connotative level, the label relates to broader values, such as trust, safety, health, and compliance with Islamic law. The results show that the connotative meaning of the halal label has a strong influence on the purchasing decisions of Muslim consumers, who often see this label as a representation of Islamic identity and lifestyle. The halal label not only serves as a product information tool, but also plays an important role in shaping purchasing preferences and decisions through cultural and religious meanings.
