Abstract

Illustrations serve as a powerful form of visual communication, conveying messages and meanings that transcend words. This study delves into the visual expression style of Ayi R. Sacadipura, specifically focusing on the illustration titled "Karembong Beureum." Employing Roland Barthes' Communication Semiotics theory, a descriptive interpretative analysis is conducted to uncover the hidden meanings embedded within the illustration. The analysis reveals how Ayi R. Sacadipura utilizes various visual elements, including color, shape, and composition, to craft and communicate messages effectively. By dissecting the semiotic codes, the study demonstrates how these elements contribute to the overall visual expression style of the artist. Furthermore, the analysis explores potential connections between the visual meanings and societal phenomena, particularly the cultural and social values embedded within the artwork. This study underscores the significance of illustrations as mediums that transcend mere decoration, highlighting their capacity to convey complex messages that can resonate with viewers on an emotional and intellectual level. Abstract

This study examines the aesthetic value of sand beds in Kampung Kasur Pasir,East Legung Village, Sumenep, Madura, by comparing the aesthetic perspectives of the Western and Eastern worlds. Sand beds are a unique cultural phenomenon that blends natural elements with local traditions, creating a rich aesthetic experience for the local community. From a Western perspective, the aesthetics of sand beds can be analyzed through the concept of visual harmony in both form and content. Meanwhile, from an Eastern perspective, sand beds represent spiritual balance and a harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and the Creator. The findings reveal that sand beds serve not only as a place for rest but also as a medium of aesthetic expression that integrates cultural, emotional, and spiritual elements. This multidisciplinary approach highlights how local aesthetic values can contribute significantly to the global understanding of aesthetics. This study aims to enrich the discourse on beauty within the context of local traditions while offering new insights into the interaction between culture and aesthetics from diverse perspectives.

Abstract

The Bali Bombers claim to be mujahideen, while the public considers them terrorists. Whose assumption is correct? The identity of a character is not 'who he is' but 'how he is'. This research answers that question through bits arrangement. Bit is the smallest unit of action that contains an objective. Within a bit, there are thoughts, moods, and ways of expression. The identity of a bit is symbolized by active verbs, such as: scolding, advising, loving, being jealous, and so on. As for arrangement, it is the concept of operationalizing acting. If the identity of a terrorist or mujahid is to be attributed to the Bali Bombers, then the action is orchestrated to meet the specified characteristic traits. The effort to identify the essential aspects and operationalize bits arrangement is pursued through Stanislavski's Realistic Acting Theory. The object of this research is a film titled Long Road To Heaven. This research produces cinematic findings: the artistic mythologization of the terrorist character in the Bali Bombers.

Abstract

When we looked back at history, we find various actions of nations that were about to be colonized in response to the colonization process by other nations. Those actions can be broadly divided into two categories: 'acceptance' and 'protest'. Meanwhile, the nature of acceptance and protest can be divided into two characteristics, namely progressive and passive. In Korea and Malaysia, which were once colonized by Japanese Imperialists in the past, we find acts of acceptance or protest in their history. We can evaluate the actions of someone who accepts various priorities from the colonizers in exchange for providing direct assistance and support to the colonizers, as progressive acceptance. Meanwhile, the process of adapting to the colonial system like fate can be said to be passive acceptance. Meanwhile, protests through physical force, including violence and the use of methods and means such as literature to inspire the struggle of the general public, can be considered progressive protests. Additionally, indirect protests can be classified as passive protests.

Abstract

The topic of eliminating vague terms in student writing is used to exemplify three powerful instructionalmethods in language education: extensive instructor feedback, iterative draft writing, and student peer review. Together, these three teaching methods increase clarity of student writing and reduce the considerable time needed for effective instructor feedback. The instructor provided biweekly feedback on cumulative drafts written by each individual student. Instructor feedback drew student attention to vague pronouns with one-to-many representations (e.g., “this” and “that” [i.e., “ini” and “itu” in Bahasa Indonesia]). Students removed vague terms, edited sentences with more descriptive terms, and wrote a new section for their next draft. The process of instructor feedback and student editing and adding new writing was repeated throughout the semester. Near the end of the semester, students use their knowledge and writing skills in a structured peer review guided by a rubric. Ninety percent of students claimed removing vague terms was the most important writing strategy that they had learned during their academic careers. The three instructional methods of instructor feedback, student cumulative practice with writing, and student peer review apply to a variety ofsubjects, topics, and themes with a goal of improving student writing in language education.

Abstract

Abstract: Folklore is a discipline, which stands alone in Indonesia, which has not been developed for long. Folklore is part of a collective culture, which is spread and passed down from generation to generation. To be able to distinguish it from culture. History is an empirical science. The consequence is that every historical statement must be based on a reliable source (fact). There is no historical source, no historical source then there is no history. This is what distinguishes history from fairy tales. Storytelling is a product of fictional imagination. In fairy tales, there is no claim that the story is told based on empirical facts or not, whether it really happened or not. Through Patilasan Dipatiukur and Prabu Siliwangi we can reflect on the struggle and courage that shaped the history of this nation. The traces of Dipatiukur and Prabu Siliwangi carved in every stone and puddle of water in this place remind us of the importance of respecting and studying valuable historical heritage. Abstract

Abstract Kawung trees in Banceuy Village are often tapped to obtain their sap. Before tapping, the tappers perform the Tolak Bala ritual to ward off potential misfortunes. This ritual activity serves as an idea for creating characters in theater performances. This study addresses the problem of the strategies of character creation based on the Tolak Bala ritual in the theater performance of the Hideung Geulis play. This study aimed to describe the creation of characters based on the Tolak Bala ritual. The approach employed in this study was the concept of reading literary reception as proposed by Wolfgang Iser. Methods of data collection included observation, interviews, and literature studies. The study results demonstrate the creation of characters through text (the Tolak Bala ritual). For example, the Kawung tree is depicted as a woman named Hideung Geulis. Monkeys and lizards, symbolic of nuisance, are portrayed as the characters of Momon and Karman, who act as thugs. The supernatural creature as nuisance is represented by the character of Santi with a bad character. The perpetrator of the ritual is depicted as a helpful character, while the tapper is characterized as a morally flawed individual.
