Abstract

Ship repair yards involve outdoor and semi-enclosed work areas, heat-absorbing metal surfaces, welding activities, and fluctuating thermal conditions that may increase workers’ physiological strain. This study examined the effects of work climate, individual characteristics, and years of service on heat strain among 36 male workers at a ship repair yard in Surabaya, Indonesia, using a quantitative cross-sectional design with total sampling. Heat strain was assessed using the Physiological Strain Index based on body temperature and heart rate. The independent variables included hot work climate, age, body mass index, chronic disease status, water intake, medication use, and years of service. Data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression. The simultaneous test showed that all independent variables collectively had a significant effect on heat strain (p = 0.000). The partial test indicated that hot work climate, age, body mass index, chronic disease status, and water intake were significant predictors, while medication use and years of service were not significant. The goodness-of-fit test confirmed that the model was suitable for the observed data. These findings highlight the need for integrated heat-strain prevention through heat exposure control, hydration management, health monitoring, and work-rest scheduling.

Abstract

Red palm oil (RPO) is a potential source of natural antioxidants such as β-carotene and vitamin E, but their stability in topical formulations remains a challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the stability of β-carotene and vitamin E, as well as the physical characteristics of RPO-based lotion formulations. The formulations were prepared using different emulsifier ratios (TEA:stearic acid = 1:1 and 1:4), temperatures (50°C and 70°C), and homogenization times (5 and 10 minutes). The contents of β-carotene and vitamin E were analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, while physical properties including pH, density, homogeneity, and sun protection factor (SPF) were also evaluated. The results showed that β-carotene stability was mainly influenced by temperature and emulsifier ratio, with optimum conditions at a 1:4 ratio and 50°C. In contrast, vitamin E stability was primarily affected by homogenization time, with optimum conditions at a 1:1 ratio and 50°C. All formulations exhibited SPF values of 13–18 (moderate protection), pH 7–8, and density of 1.000–1.031 g/mL, indicating acceptable physical properties, while improved homogeneity was achieved at higher temperature or longer homogenization time. In conclusion, processing conditions significantly influence the stability of active compounds and the quality of RPO-based lotion, with optimal performance achieved at lower temperature and appropriate emulsifier ratio.

Abstract

We evaluated the sustainability and feasibility of sanitation systems on passenger ferries operating in Semarang. Sanitation plays a vital role in maintaining public health, ensuring passenger safety, and supporting sustainable maritime transportation. This study employed a descriptive approach, relying on field observations and a literature review to assess sanitation conditions based on applicable health regulations and maritime standards. Evaluation focused on the availability of clean water, sanitation facilities, waste management systems, and the presence of disease vectors such as rodents. The results indicate that existing sanitation systems do not fully meet sustainability and health standards, particularly regarding waste management practices and vector control. It highlights the need to improve sanitation management through better maintenance practices, the application of appropriate waste treatment technologies, and increased awareness among ship crews. Findings contribute to bridging knowledge, technology, and society in achieving sustainable development, particularly in improving public health and resilience within maritime communities.
