Abstract

The hadith regarding preferences in choosing a life partner, which states, "Women are married for four reasons..." is often interpreted in a partial and hierarchical manner, where physical aspects such as beauty, wealth, and lineage are positioned equally or even above religious values. This textual-literal interpretation tends to reproduce patriarchal norms and disregards the historical context in which the hadith was revealed. This study aims to reinterpret the hadith through the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, emphasizing pre-understanding and the fusion of horizons between the text and the reader. A qualitative-critical approach is employed, drawing on classical (turāth) and contemporary literature as the foundation for analysis. The findings reveal that religion, as mentioned in the hadith, is not merely one of four equal considerations but represents a normative critique against the materialistic and status-driven tendencies of Arab society at the time. Non-physical criteria such as moral integrity, responsibility, and mutual respect are identified as the essence of religious values to be prioritized. Through Gadamerian hermeneutics, this hadith can be contextualized as an ethical guideline for establishing marital relationships that are balanced, just, and free from patriarchal domination. Thus, this study offers an alternative, reflective, and contextually grounded interpretation of the hadith, reaffirming the importance of religious values in contemporary social practice.

Abstract

This study explores how the modern search for identity is often captured by a consumerist culture that promotes a fragmented self, overly dependent on materialism. The research aims to: (1) define Aristotle's concept of the harmony of soul and body; (2) analyze its contribution to understanding human identity; and (3) apply this concept to critique the patterns of consumerist society. This study uses a qualitative-philosophical method to analyze key texts, primarily Aristotle's De Anima, alongside a comparative-conceptual analysis contrasting Aristotelian thought with consumerist culture. The findings reveal that Aristotle’s hylomorphic framework posits the soul as the entelechy (functional actuality) of the body, creating an inseparable psycho-physical unity. Authentic human identity is therefore rooted in this integrated whole, with its ultimate purpose (telos) being a state of flourishing (eudaimonia). This is achieved through rational, virtuous activity (energeia) that forges a stable character (hexis) guided by practical wisdom (phronesis). In contrast, consumer culture is shown to be fundamentally pathological, as it disrupts this harmony by advocating for a superficial identity based on external ownership and image (pleonexia), leading to anxiety and profound dissatisfaction. In conclusion, Aristotle’s philosophy provides a robust critique of consumerism's fragmenting effect on the self and offers a timeless blueprint for building an authentic identity grounded in holistic well-being. It is recommended that future research apply this Aristotelian ethical framework to other contemporary challenges, including AI ethics, environmentalism, and educational reform.

Abstract

Historically, ʿilm al-kalām developed as a theological discipline aimed at safeguarding the coherence of Islamic creed through rational argumentation grounded in a theocentric and apologetic orientation. However, the dynamics of modernity—marked by historical consciousness, social complexity, and increasing ethical demands—have challenged the adequacy of classical kalām methodology in addressing contemporary human problems. This article examines how the methodology of ʿilm al-kalām has undergone an epistemological transformation from a theocentric orientation toward a more anthropocentric approach within the context of modernity. Employing a qualitative conceptual approach and a critical–hermeneutical framework, the study analyzes the epistemological limitations of classical kalām and the direction of its modern reconstruction. The findings indicate that anthropocentrism in modern kalām is not intended to replace divine transcendence, but rather to reaffirm the role of human beings as active epistemological subjects in interpreting and actualizing divine values within historical and social realities. The study concludes that the transformation of kalām methodology enables Islamic theology to function as a reflective discipline that bridges the normative authority of revelation with issues of justice, moral responsibility, and contemporary human challenges without abandoning its theological foundations.

Abstract

The phenomenon of singlehood has sparked debate among Muslims regarding its compatibility with religious teachings. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by exploring thematic hadith studies based on the term al-rahbāniyyah (singlehood). Meanwhile, the approach used in this study is a theological approach (maqashid al-sunnah) elaborated with a sociological approach. The results show that even though al-rahbāniyyah is historically associated with monastic practices that are criticized in the Qur’an (57:27), thematic hadith studies offer more nuanced insights into balancing spiritual devotion and social responsibility. By analyzing hadith thematically through the keyword al-rahbāniyyah, this study successfully demonstrates how Islamic tradition navigates individual autonomy, marital obligations, and communal ethics, while also providing a critical lens for addressing the issue of celibacy in the modern era. The results of this study conclude that the thematic insights of al-rahbāniyyah encourage inclusive dialogue about celibacy, promoting flexibility in Islamic law while maintaining core ethical principles.

Abstract

This article critically examines Norbert Nebes' reading of the tragedy of the Martyrs of Najran and the collapse of the Kingdom of Himyar, particularly in relation to the interpretation of QS al-Burūj [85]:4. Using a philological-historical and critical hermeneutic approach, this study shows that Nebes' epigraphic historicism—although excellent in reconstructing the geopolitics of early 6th-century South Arabia—tends to reduce the revelation of the Qur'an to a historical artifact that is equated with inscriptions and hagiographic texts. This reduction ignores the theological and rhetorical autonomy of the Qur'an as a discourse that interprets history, rather than merely reflecting it. Through a methodological dialogue with Angelika Neuwirth's discursive paradigm and Irfan Shahid's humanistic approach, this article asserts that the tragedy of Najran cannot be adequately understood through historical verification alone, but requires a reading that integrates the meaning of faith, human experience, and moral transformation. This study argues that an adequate methodology for religious studies must transcend historical positivism by balancing philological precision and theological reflection, so that revelation is understood as a meaningful event that continues to live across time.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reinterpretation of polemical verses in the Qur'an from the perspective of modern Muslim reformist hermeneutics, particularly through Mun'im Sirry's study in Scriptural Polemics (2014). Using qualitative methods and a literature review approach, this study utilizes the contextual hermeneutics theoretical framework of Fazlur Rahman, Abdullah Saeed, Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, and Muhammad Arkoun to explore the dynamics of textual meaning between its historical context and universal values. The results show that reformist interpretations of verses such as Q.S. 3:85 and Q.S. 5:51 shift the exclusive meaning towards an inclusive paradigm that emphasizes the ethics of coexistence, religious freedom, and human solidarity. Polemical verses are no longer read as legitimizing theological conflict, but rather as a moral basis for fair and civilized interfaith relations. This study recommends strengthening contextual interpretation studies in Islamic academic circles and integrating pluralistic values into contemporary religious discourse.

Abstract

The phenomenon of cancel culture has become one of the major dynamics in contemporary digital communication, characterized by collective forms of social punishment carried out through social media platforms. Within the digital public sphere shaped by algorithmic virality, public emotional responses often develop rapidly without adequate processes of information verification. This condition frequently triggers practices of online shaming, narrative distortion, and reputational damage toward individuals. This study aims to analyze the relevance of the Prophet’s hadith concerning the ethics of guarding one’s speech in responding to the phenomenon of cancel culture on social media. The research employs a qualitative method based on library research with a thematic-contextual approach to hadiths related to communication ethics, self-restraint, and the principle of amar ma‘ruf nahi munkar. The findings show that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, such as the command to speak good or remain silent and the prohibition against spreading information without verification, possess strong relevance to contemporary challenges in digital communication. These principles can be understood as an ethical communication framework emphasizing information verification (tabayyun), the regulation of public emotion, and the protection of human dignity (hifẓ al-‘ird). Therefore, hadith-based communication ethics may serve as a normative framework for developing a more ethical, fair, and responsible culture of digital communication within the dynamics of the digital public sphere.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the hangout lifestyle among teenagers and university students reflects a shift from social interaction into a symbol of identity and social status, which potentially leads to consumptive behavior and wastefulness. This study aims to analyze the concept of wastefulness in Islam, particularly israf and tabzir from the perspective of hadith, and to examine wasteful practices within the hangout lifestyle. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, using primary sources from authoritative hadith collections, along with hadith commentaries and contemporary literature, analyzed through thematic, contextual, and maqasid al-sharī‘ah approaches. The findings show that the Prophet’s hadith strictly prohibits all forms of wastefulness, both in the use of wealth and time. Isrāf refers to excess in permissible matters, while tabzir refers to the squandering of wealth without benefit. In the context of the hangout lifestyle, wastefulness occurs when such activities are carried out excessively and driven by hedonism and social image. Therefore, the Prophet’s hadith remains relevant as an ethical framework to guide a more proportional, beneficial, and value-oriented lifestyle in accordance with Islamic principles.

Abstract

This study examines the attitude of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani toward Dutch colonialism as reflected in his interpretation of the qitāl (warfare) verses in Tafsir Marāḥ Labīd. This research employs a qualitative approach based on library research using the thematic (maudhū‘i) method of Qur’anic interpretation. The analytical framework refers to the classification of qitāl verses proposed by Mahmud Syaltut, particularly those related to the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims. The analysis focuses on Shaykh Nawawi’s interpretation of Q.S. al-Hajj (22):39–41 and Q.S. al-Baqarah (2):190–194. The findings indicate that Shaykh Nawawi understands warfare in the Qur’an as a defensive act aimed at responding to oppression and protecting religious freedom, while emphasizing ethical limitations in conflict. Although his interpretation does not explicitly connect the qitāl verses with Dutch colonialism, it can be understood within the intellectual-historical context of the nineteenth century as reflecting a religious stance that tends to be non-confrontational yet critical of oppression, particularly through the strengthening of Islamic scholarly traditions and intellectual networks in the Nusantara.
