Abstract

This paper aims to give a critical analysis on the two prevailing notions introduced by Gardner and associates, Integrative Orientation and Instrumental Orientation, in today’s ELT researches. Dörnyei and associates argued that integrative and instrumental orientations are unable to capture learners’ fluctuations and complexity of motivation as the result of many factors from within learners and outside learners, who are also social beings in their respective environments. The two orientations also trigger misinterpretations among researchers as they are often used interchangeably with motivations while they are two very different concepts. Furthermore, the growing prominence of Global English perspective, which does not see L1 speakers of English as the standards of “correctness” and “good English” also contributes to growing irrelevance of the integrative orientation notion among researchers. Based on the critical analysis, it is suggested that researchers focus on qualitative approaches in investigating English learners’ motivation as the acknowledgement of its complexity and to limit greed to oversimplify and generalize motivation of learners, who are also social beings with all the complexity and dynamics. Abstract

Language development is always influenced by economic, social, politic, culture and science. The influencing between languages appears in the form of using words or phrases interchangeably in both oral and written form.Interference is caused by speaker bilingualism background, disloyalty to target language, the limited vocabularies of TL mastered by a learner, Need of synonym, Prestige and style.Interference can be a negative type of language transfer, like the use of a native-language pattern or role which leads to an error or inappropriate form in the target language. In the other hand, it is also positive transfer, as it makes the learning easier, and may occur when both native language and the target language have similar form. Events of interference has four types; phonic interference, grammatical interference, lexical interference and semantic interference Keywords: Language development, Interference, language transfer

Abstract

Theories of semantics ‘ interpretation of meanings are not only discussing about speakers’ meaning and word or sentence meaning. They are also influenced by ambiguity.     Ambiguity can cause different interpretation of meanings. One of the problems is caused byone has more than one meaning. The aim of this research entitled : “The Analysis of Ambiguity Found in the Texts containing Local Wisdom”.  is to find out lexical ambiguity in the texts containing local wisdom. The choice of the texts can be in the form of brochures of some tourism objects   around Cirebon, or the hystorical background of Cirebon and some other places of The Area III of Cirebon and Ciayu Maja Kuning. This research is regarded to be important due to the effect of ambiguity that can cause mis interpretation of meaning that will cause misunderstanding. The term lexical ambiguity follows the theories of Fromkin et.al (2002) and Kent Bach (2009). The data is taken from  those texts that have  been previously stated, then all the data willl be analyzed to know  the type and occurence of the usage in those texts. After that  the way how to disambiguate  them will be described. The research method that is used in this research  is descriptive qualitative from Creswell (1994).Findings :  The words classes found to be ambiguous were: 46.6 % Nouns;   33.33 % Adjectives;  6.66%  Verb; 6.66% Adverb. It also means that its occurances of ambiguites were  mostly in nouns, adjectives, verb and adverb. The way to disambiguate the ambiguous words mostly by giving additional information required to clarify the meanings of those words in order to avoid ambiguity; only one using picture. Almost all the ambiguities  were caused by having multiple meanings that are also called polysemious. Other researchers who are interested toknow more about ambiguity can use other kind of texts to  elaborate the findings. Keywords: ambiguity, local wisdom content-text, lexical

Abstract

Students’ attitude towards technology use in classroom context is regarded as one of significant elements of the success of ICT integration in teaching and learning context. While the integration of technology in education and its elements have been discussed in literature, the discussion of students’ attitude to such integration in an English matriculation program for university students is still limited. This paper attempted to investigate college non-English major students’ attitude towards the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in an English matriculation program. The data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 74 students at Duta Wacana Christian University who attended an English matriculation program. The questionnaire employed a 5-point Likert type scale and consisted of three different sections which made of 33 questions in total. The data were quantitatively analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 22. An analysis of relationships between students’ attitude to technology in learning English and their gender, age, and program was analyzed using Pearson Product-Moment correlations. Multiple linear regression was also employed to develop statistical model for this study. The findings of this study provided further discussion on the integration of technology in classroom contexts and indicated students’ positive attitude towards the use of ICT in teaching and learning process. Keywords: Information and Communication Technology (ICT), non-English major students, attitude to technology

Abstract

Empowerment is often defined by impact, competence, and meaningfulness (Frymier, Shulman, & Houser, 1996). In order to empower students, English teachers have to be empowered themselves.  However, research indicates teachers of English in madrasahs  is still underperformance. Thus, this paper is attempted to explain the aspects and factors relating to empowerment issues in the contexts of the madrasahs in Indonesia. Despite of small number of madrasah that have high qualified performances in instructional practices, public madrasahs still sound unsatisfying comparing to the secular schools. The issue of teachers and learners’ voices are still lack of attention in both school and instructional decision making. As the results, participation and engagement in English learning are still remaining less appreciation in term of meaningful learning both for teachers and students. Keywords: empowerment, madrasah, decision-making, voice, meaningful learning, learning involvement
