Fate is regarded as a central component in tragedy. The significant role of fate is recognized when, despite a character's heroic acts and good intentions, they face death simply because they are doomed to die. But studies confirm that fate does not play a similarly critical role in the tragic denouement of each play. This paper attempts a critical comparison on the role and nature of fate in the downfall of protagonists in the classical Greek and Shakespearean tragedies. By reviewing research-based articles and books, and by reading through selected texts in reader-response approach, this paper attempts to identify the entirely different natures of fate that came into play for the tragic heroes’ downfall as portrayed in these two different ages. The findings manifest that the force behind the collapse of the heroes in the classical Greek tragedies was predominantly fate where the hero had little to do but to become a pawn in the hands of external forces beyond his control, while the force behind the tragic events is not external in the Shakespearean tragedies. Rather, the heroes themselves were, on the whole, responsible for their tragic downfalls due to their internal triggers.

This paper presents the core of a descriptive theory of Indirect Speech acts, i.e. utterances used by the speaker to the hearer based on the three types of felicity conditions such as content condition, preparatory condition, and sincerity condition. The data examples takes from the English novel "The Cowboy's Secret Son" contains some of indirect speech act utterances that are included to the pragmatic study. The researcher explains and analyzes every utterance based on the theory of Yule (1996), Searle (1976, 1975), Austin (1962), Mey (1993), Bach and Harmish (1979), and Levinson (1983). The result of the research is founded that the speaker uses indirect speech act is to convey the request to the hearer to do something in the future. Moreover they use indirect speech act which has two meanings such as literal meaning and non-literal meaning or indirect meaning. In other words, they use indirect speech act to avoid the hearer to get upset, feel bad, angry and for politeness. And, generally they use indirect speech act because they have recognized the matters they are uttering.

Many English learners use English Teaching Channels on YouTube as an alternative source of learning. Most of those channels were organized by Indonesian teachers. The qualities of the teaching presentations on these channels are varied. Inappropriate use of vocabulary, inaccurate grammar, and mispronunciations are often found in these channels. This research attempts to study the inaccurate pronunciations of the English teachers. The study is deemed necessary due to the fact that learners consider online English teachers as good language model and as an alternative to access English learning materials. The result of the study shows that there are nine types of English vowels that are pronounced inaccurately by the teachers. Most of them are absent in Indonesian vowel system. Cautions should be made when using English Teaching channels on YouTube and some suggestions for Indonesian English teachers are presented.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted people's normal lives across the globe, educational institutions have been compelled to embrace virtual learning. This mixed-method study aimed to investigate the teachers preparedness for online teaching at an elementary school in West Java in Indonesia and to find out the challenges they face while teaching young learners. It employed a close ended questionnaire followed by interviews to collect necessary data from seven purposively selected English language teachers based on their availability and experience in online teaching. The data demonstrated that most of the teachers in the context were well prepared to teach online. The findings entailed their mastery of necessary technical skills, prior experience and responsiveness with online teaching, commitment to carry out their duties as teachers and efficiency in time management in online teaching. However, the results also revealed a number of issues from some respondents such as limited knowledge in using different virtual media, high internet cost, lack of support from the education department, unstable internet connectivity, limited cellular broadband data, lack of skills in navigating available technology, inadequate knowledge of internet technology, unfamiliarity with online resources, and insufficient training. The research will help English language teachers, educational policymakers, and other stakeholders adopt more successful online education.

Indonesia’s education sector has been experiencing development, but the inclusive segment needs more support since the number of disabled students are rising while the readiness of schools to nurture them seems underperformed. The main problem is the discrepancy between school educators’ competence and the special needs of students. In the west, it is common for school to have a collaborative consultation to overcome such problem. It interconnects collaborators in an equal position to reciprocally develop the best solution for existing problems. This paper aims to promote the term for education stakeholders in Indonesia.

This study reports how Tutorial YouTube (TYT) is used to teach English to support learning activity in EFL class in Galuh university considering that the students still require English knowledge to complete and polish what they learn in the classroom. The language media in TYT is presented in Indonesian language because it is only for Indonesian students. In the making of TYT, students' need analysis (SNA) is required to find out students' weakness in learning English. It's usually all about what language features they need and what constructed videos need to be uploaded. The purpose of the study is to find out the process of how non-native English teacher (NNET) proceeds SNA underpinning the construction of TYT for the sake of enhancing students' English performance. This case study took place in one of private universities in West Java. One English teacher, in particular English lecturer, participated for the interview and class observation. The interview result was crosschecked with the classroom observation under the Triangulation process. The goal of Triangulation is to get deep result and finding of the research. Thus, the result shows that NNET uses SNA-based TYT. She observes what the students need by scanning them all the way through during the learning session. If she thinks that her students need enrichment in one of language features, she will construct a TYT and upload it. This kind of classroom observation might scaffold the teacher in teaching English to EFL students since the time allotment in teaching English in the class can not cope with many aspects of language features. The conclusion is TYT, as the learning media, is developed based on SNA and it is fruitfull to be implemented to fulfill what the students need in learning English.

The current global pandemic triggers English teachers to be innovative and competent in delivering teaching instructions in online classrooms. Even though Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is widely used to support online language teaching and learning, nonetheless, the integration of Mobile-Assisted Language Assessment (MALA) in speaking skills has not been immensely examined. Thus, this current study aimed to scrutinize Indonesian EFL learners perceptions of the use of WhatsApp as a tool for peer assessment in an online speaking class, as well as its potential benefits and drawbacks. This qualitative study employed a semi-structured interview to gain the data which were then analyzed by using phenomenological analysis. Fourteen secondary learners participated in two sessions of an online class by assessing their peers oral performances via the WhatsApp application. In the end, they were interviewed regarding their views on the method employed to assess their oral skills. The results indicated the participants positive perceptions towards the method along with various benefits and drawbacks they encountered during the process which were divided into technical and academic aspects. The results suggested that WhatsApp as a tool for mobile-assisted language assessment was not supposed to be perceived as a single major assessment for speaking skills, rather as an alternative to complement traditional assessments.
