Abstract

Even the most difficult, listen to foreign language materials can be a pleasure, especially when it is done outside the classroom. Students can freely choose what they want to listen and can anywhere do listening activities. This study examines how the learners did their extensive listening activities. From all the links given, thirty-nine students who took listening course in the fourth semester only accessed youtube and chose song and movie as the materials for supporting their listening activities, and they are mostly interested in listening to song. They mostly listen to song five times a week with the duration four minutes for each listening activity.

Abstract

Reading skill has its own modes; two of them are reading aloud and silent reading. Reading aloud and silent reading modes are interrelated with each other and affecting students' reading comprehension competence. The most EFL students’ common problems in the school is they do not know the appropriate techniques or modes applied in reading comprehension, therefore their reading comprehension results cannot be maximized. The researcher used quantitative research method and comparative study research design in conducting the research process. By using Reading Comprehension Test and interview, researcher collecting all the data in order to find deep information about how Indonesian EFL learners’ reading comprehension are through silent reading and reading aloud, its significance, and the factors that influence students’ reading comprehension score. The researcher took the samples in 34 students who divided into two groups; 17 students for silent group and 17 students for aloud group. The findings of this quantitative research indicated that there is no significance difference between reading aloud and silent reading regarding to Indonesian EFL learners reading comprehension competence and Reading Comprehension Factor (RCF) as the most factor that influence students’ reading comprehension score in silent group, while Reading Factor other than Comprehension (RFOC) as the most factor that influence students’ reading comprehension score in aloud group.

Abstract

In the English classroom writing as a communicating ideas considered to be most challenging. Students usually found many difficulty to expressing ideas or choosing the words which they will write. However, it is not the case if the teacher guided well their students with corrective feedback. The teacher as the fasilitator has important role in the fasilitating learning by guiding students and eliciting response from them. This study examined the teachers corrective feedback in respoding to students english writing in one of public senior high school in Indramayu. In this research, the data were obtained from a teacher of one of senior high school in Indramayu . This research were being analyzed descriptive qualitative method and therefore the data were being collected through documentation and interview questions. The framework undertaken is being proposed by Ellis, thus the interview question was being adapted from Thorsteinsen. The findings was found that there were three categories of feedbacks specifically, direct corrective feedback, unfocused corrective feedback and metalinguistics corrective feedback. Meanwhile, the reasons that the teacher provide different feedback startegies, teachers corrective feedbacks is the key to make students conscious of making mistake on writing assignments.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the presence of signs and combinations ofsigns (codes) that are present on the fictitious figure of Sarah Aprilia in Cologne Baskadvertising  on  the  internet.  The  sign  and  the  code  in  general  should  have  a  commonunderstanding by prospective readers (target audience). This research used qualitativeapproach  with  interpretative  descriptive  method  because  semiotic  science  is  diggingand discovery the meaning. In analyzing the fictitious figure of Sarah Aprilia, the signthat  appearance  is  false  sign.  Deceptive  mark  is  a  sign  that  unknown  origin  ,  but  theengineering rests on a natural object (hybrid), but viewers assume it was real presence.This is due to the many cross signs presented visual codes that make the figure of SarahAprilia as a real figure.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate how the educational debating method can foster the students' speaking ability at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Sumber and to find out how the students' activities in learning speaking using the educational debating method in fostering students' speaking ability. This research primarily used a quantitative method to analyze the data with quasi-experimental method was chosen to test the hypothesis because the study focused on only one aspect of investigating, namely speaking ability withiut controlling all variables. There were two classes consisting of 28 students each class as sample in SMAN 1 Sumber. The data was obtained by analyzing students' speaking scores, observation sheet, and questionnaire results. The research found that the speaking scores of the experimental group was higher than the control group and it was also supported by the students' activities from the questionnaire. The students felt that educational debating method can foster their speaking. It made the students enthusiastic to learn and help them to understand the matter of the subject. It was a pleasant and good method in teaching spaking, especially for asking and giving opinion. The students liked to participate in the use of educational debating method because they had an opportunity to study in pairs and improved their achievement in speaking by knowing pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

Abstract

Interaction is an important word for language teacher. The interaction between teacher and students can determine the quality of teaching learning. In some instances of classroom interaction, the occurrences of dynamic moves cannot be avoided. The dynamic elements are always found in the interaction between teacher and students. In this case, teacher plays significantrole in the classroom interaction. In the scope of this phenomenon, the research was aimed to find out types of dynamic moves in the classroom interaction and to reveal how question and answer are realized. The data were gathered from the Efl classroom interaction which was recorded. The findings revealed that varieties of dynamic moves were found in the interaction. These findings are interesting to be discuss among efl teachers so that the English teachers are able to boost their instructional practices.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of SFL theory in teaching academic writing. The present study was to find out what the change of genre awareness of students writing. Twenty-two participants were recruited to engage in the process of deconstruction, join construction, and independent construction activities. The findings of study revealed two important aspect in teaching academic writing, thematic Progression in students writing and appraisal concept in students writing argumentation. Data sources were gathered through student assignments to write argumentative essay. Student assignments were written in 6o minutes with the IELTS and TOEFL writing. Questionnaire and interviews in argumentative writing were given to students. Data were collected from students assignment and data were analysed through transitivity and appraisal system (Martin & White, 2015). This finding of the study implies to the language education particularly writing instruction.

Abstract

This research studied about classroom management problems faced by pre-service teacher. Pre-service teacher is student teachers before they have under taken any teaching. Before they are graudate, they have to accomplish teacher training subject. When they come to schools to teach students, they find so many new things, such as; the real instructional devices, students’s characters of senior high school, students’ responses in learning process. In this study, the writer investigated the students’ responses in learning process, and it become challanging for pre-service teacher to solve bed students’ responses. There are some classroom mangement problems that pre-service teacher faced, they are: students always lots of students played mobile phone, been lazy, had chat, been passive students during learning process.

Abstract

This is a qualitative study to explore the students' competence in pursuing ofabstract writing among the undergraduate students of Mathematics department. The data were collected through classroom observation and self report. By applying self assignment, small group discussion, and presentation, the students' writing experiences were employed in order to discuss the weaknesses and strengths of the mathematic articles given during class discussion; whereas proof-reading, revising, and supervising were also critically provided. As the results, five classes that were involved in the investigation as the sample shows their abilities in applying their best practices based on the suggested method. The results indicate that the undergraduate students of Mathematics were able to reconstruct their ideas in the form of abstract feature, while the abstract writing method was possibly applied in the course of Mathematics.

Abstract

The present quasi experimental study was conducted to describe how theimplementation of sentence soup game in the teaching writing and to determine the significant difference of the students’ achievement according to their pre-test and posttest result. The sample of study was 70 eighth grade students of SMPN 4 PalimananCirebon. A pre-test and post-test equivalent group design was used to compare the achievement of two groups. The collected data was statistically analyzed by t test formula. The result showed that: 1).The implementation of sentence soup game assessed gave positive effect in teaching writing. It evidenced if students got advantages in this learning with playing activity. 2a).There was no significant difference of the students’ pre-test result. Where null hypothesis was accepted, the tobtained was less than the tcritical (0,980 < 1,667). 2b). There was significant difference of the students’ post-test result. Where null hypothesis was rejected, the tobtained higher than tcritical (2,692 > 1,667). The students’ performance of experimental group was better based on the difference between the mean scores. The mean of experimental group was 5,5 on pre-test and 7,4 on post-test, hence control group was 5,0 on pre-test and 6,7 on post-test. It indicated if teaching English writing through sentence soup game enhanced the achievement level of the students.
