Abstract

This research discusses the implementation of censorship management at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta Library as a strategy to control the procurement of collections that are not in accordance with academic needs and institutional values. Censorship is important because the library not only functions as an information provider, but also as a guardian of the quality and safety of content for users. The purpose of this study is to describe the process of applying censorship to library collections, as well as identify the obstacles faced by librarians in its implementation. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through interviews, observation, and documentation. The informants in this study were the censorship team consisting of the head of the library, librarians in the procurement section, and collection processing. The results showed that censorship activities have been implemented since the inception of the library and are carried out periodically every time there is a new collection procurement plan. The approach used refers to the McColvin model which combines the librarian's professional point of view and user needs. Some of the obstacles encountered include budget constraints, the high cost of foreign collections, and proposals for banned collections. Selective and structured censorship management is needed to maintain collection quality and support academic goals

Abstract

This study explores the critical role of curation in library collection development to ensure the availability of relevant and high-quality information resources. Curation is understood as a multifaceted process encompassing the selection, organization, and preservation of library materials to meet user needs in the digital age. Employing a literature review methodology, data were analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Digital Curation Unit (DCU) model can be effectively applied in the context of library collection development. This model comprises several key stages: appraisal, ingest (digitization), classification, publication, and preservation. The implementation of DCU enhances collection quality and optimizes user experience. Effective curation not only addresses users’ evolving information needs but also ensures the continued relevance of collections in response to technological advancements. Furthermore, it supports the long-term preservation of information, securing sustainable access to knowledge resources. In conclusion, curation-based collection development plays a pivotal role in improving library services while supporting education and research. Through proper collection management, libraries can function as adaptive and reliable centers of knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the level of compliance with the National Library Standards (SNP 004:2024) by participants of the Technical Guidance on School/Madrasah Library Development, organized by the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024 across 19 provinces. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with an evaluative research design. The population consisted of all 1,804 participants of the technical guidance program, who were also used as the sample (total sampling). Data were collected using a library accreditation instrument based on six core components—collection, facilities and infrastructure, services, library personnel, administration, and management—and three supporting components: innovation and creativity, reading interest level, and the community literacy development index. The instrument was distributed online via Google Forms and analyzed quantitatively to determine the average scores and the extent to which the national standards were met, both overall and per component. The results indicate that only 315 respondents (17.46%) achieved scores above 60 and can be categorized as meeting SNP 004:2024, while 1,489 respondents (82.54%) still need to improve various aspects of library management. The component with the highest average score was library administration (53.51), whereas the lowest-scoring component was innovation and creativity (36.05). These findings suggest that administrative and institutional aspects are relatively better addressed than innovative program development. The results of this study are expected to serve as a foundation for future policy planning, capacity-building, and improvement efforts in school/madrasah libraries.

Abstract

The development of information technology has transformed the social landscape, posing challenges to the continuity of gotong royong in Indonesia. Amid modernization often associated with individualism, traditional physical gotong-royong practices appear to be weakening, yet new forms of collective collaboration are emerging in the digital sphere. This study examines how digital libraries can function as socio-technical infrastructures to facilitate and strengthen the transformation of gotong-royong culture. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and case study analysis, it explores collaborative mechanisms on digital platforms. The findings show that digital libraries hold significant potential to evolve from mere information repositories into arenas of social interaction. Through participatory features, they can foster two forms of gotong royong: () digital kerja bakti (collective work), where communities build shared knowledge assets, as exemplified by the Sobat Budaya platform; and 2) digital tolong-menolong (reciprocal help), where individuals exchange knowledge and recommendations, as seen in the iJateng application. However, realizing this potential faces major challenges related to unequal access to technology and digital literacy. This research reconceptualizes digital libraries as active facilitators in revitalizing gotong royong as vital social capital in Indonesia’s digital era.

Abstract

The development of information technology has drastically changed the way students access and utilize academic content. Searching for information has become much easier thanks to the availability of various digital platforms. However, this convenience also poses new challenges, one of which is information overload. Students, especially those not from Library and Information Science programs (non- Library and Information Science), often find it challenging to assess and select relevant and reliable sources. This is due to their low information literacy skills. This study aims to explore the experiences of non-Library Information Science students in dealing with information overload when searching for academic information. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four non-Library Information Science students who were selected purposively. The results show that non-Library Information Science students experience information overload due to their limited information literacy skills. They struggle to distinguish credible academic sources, despite generally relying heavily on Google and artificial intelligence-based tools in their information search. Cross-disciplinary information literacy training is essential for enabling students to critically evaluate information and maintain academic integrity in the digital age. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of library anxiety among Library and Information Science students of the 2023 cohort at the State Islamic University of North Sumatera (UINSU) and Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat). The research focuses on two dominant factors causing anxiety: uncertainty in initiating information searches and confusion when navigating the library environment. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving ten purposely selected informants. The findings reveal that most students experience affective and social barriers when interacting with librarians or using library systems. Feelings of embarrassment, fear of being judged as incompetent, and perceptions of librarians as overly formal reinforce students’ tendency to avoid direct interaction. Furthermore, there is a behavioral shift toward the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies such as ChatGPT, perceived as more practical and free from social pressure. These findings indicate that library anxiety remains a significant issue among digital-native students, leading to a decline in physical library visits and interpersonal engagement. The study highlights the need for academic libraries to design human-centered and technology-adaptive service strategies to foster inclusive, comfortable, and empowering information literacy experiences in the digital era.
