Abstract

Limited physical contact which was initially caused by the COVID-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020 resulted in The library having temporarily closed its services. The library as an institution which has the task of managing collections professionally using a standard system to meet the educational, research, preservation and recreation needs of its users must make changes. This research aims to determine the benefits of online media and digital libraries to improve library services. The method used is literature study and observation of the YouTube and Biodigilib applications. Online media is a technology product that can be used as a means of information and also a communication tool to improve library services. The ease of use of social media (Youtube) can be implemented and used in libraries, both to promote collections and information held by libraries or as a medium of communication between libraries and users. The Biodigilib digital library application is the result of technology, this application cannot replace 100% of conventional libraries. Digital libraries can be used as a hybrid library service as a companion. These two technological results, namely online media (Youtube) and the biodigilib application, can be used as a solution in libraries if there is limited physical contact.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate and enhance the utilization of artificial intelligence in the libraries of Open University to boost students' information literacy. In the digital age, artificial intelligence applications hold the promise of improving both the accessibility and quality of library services, along with facilitating personalized user experiences through recommendation systems, chatbots, and automated data processing. Nonetheless, the implementation of artificial intelligence also introduces ethical issues, including data privacy and algorithmic bias. The research employed a qualitative approach with case study analysis to pinpoint best practices in artificial intelligence deployment and its ethical ramifications. Findings indicated that out of 450 respondents, 45% were able to download information, 22% were unable to do so, and 33% were uncertain. The integration of artificial intelligence can enhance operational efficiency and user experience, as long as it is complemented by policies that uphold integrity and fairness. This study advocates for the creation of ethical guidelines and staff training, with the aspiration that Open University can lead in the responsible use of artificial intelligence technology in the realm of distance education. This study analyses effective strategies in library information literacy programs in the academic environment. This research uses a mixed-method sequential explanatory; this study began with collecting quantitative data from 72 librarians at various universities in Indonesia, followed by qualitative interviews with library leaders. The results of the study show that the competence of librarians influences the success of the library information literacy program, the availability of relevant programs, and the active participation of students. This study concludes the need for continuous training for librarians, designing programs that are responsive to the needs of students, and strengthening cooperation between libraries and faculties to increase the effectiveness and participation in information literacy programs in the academic environment. Abstract

This study explains how teachers can help enhance students' reading interest at SMA PGRI Malangbong, a newly established school without a library. The research questions aim to uncover teachers' strategies in acting as literacy promoters despite existing limitations. This qualitative study employs a case study design through observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. Literacy challenges and strategies were identified through data analysis using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings indicate that the absence of a library hinders students' access to reading materials. To serve as effective coordinators for this purpose, teachers adopt innovative methods to manage books, including bringing books from home, shared reading time, literacy games, book review assignments, and more. Although limited facilities are perceived as obstacles, these strategies successfully boost students' motivation. Additionally, factors such as the low reading culture within families and unsupportive digital media also influence students' reading interest. In summary, teachers act as both library substitutes and literacy promoters. However, this role cannot be fulfilled in isolation it requires investment in training, reading materials, and partnerships with communities and government. Therefore, this study provides strategic recommendations for developing sustainable literacy policies for schools with limited facilities.

Abstract

The preservation of library collections, especially those made from organic materials such as paper and leather, is an important challenge in information management. Environmental factors such as uncontrolled temperature and relative humidity can accelerate the degradation of collections. This study aims to analyze the microclimate conditions in the manuscript collection room of the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Library to evaluate the risks to collection preservation. Temperature and relative humidity monitoring was carried out continuously for one month using data loggers in the UI Library's manuscript collection room. The data obtained were analyzed to calculate the Equivalent Lifetime Multiplier (eLM) value, an index that measures the impact of temperature on the lifespan of collections. The results showed that the average temperature in the collection room was 28.1°C, with an average relative humidity of 70.2%. The eLM value obtained was 0.209, indicating that the collection is at high risk of degradation with an effective lifespan of only 20.9% of its ideal lifespan. Significant temperature and humidity fluctuations were also observed during the monitoring period, especially when the HVAC system was not operating. In conclusion, the microclimate conditions in the UI Library's manuscript collection room are not ideal for long-term collection preservation, with high temperatures and humidity as well as fluctuations that accelerate degradation. This study recommends optimizing the HVAC system, continuous environmental monitoring, and further research to develop effective mitigation strategies.
