Abstract

A numerical ocean modeling study using spectral element method is used to simulate the Indian Ocean Kelvin wave propagation along the Makassar Strait and the Sulawesi Sea by giving a-prescribed-50-day Kelvin wave forcing in the northern mouth of the Lombok Strait. The least square fit analysis is employed to extract a-50-day-resonant signal from the interface height data simulation. The results indicate that the 50-day Kelvin wave propagates northward along the Makassar Strait. One part of this wave turns back at the Labani channel and makes southward propagation along the eastern coast of the Makassar Strait. The rest part is going further to enter the Sulawesi Sea and makes 50-day resonance within the basin. This finding will have important implication on the intra-seasonal time scale variability of the Indonesian throughflow transport entering the Indonesian Seas and needs further investigation as well as comparison with observational data.

Abstract

Modulation of Intercellular Junction by Utilization of Cadherin Peptides as an Effort to Improve Drug Delivery. Rapid advances in combinatorial chemistry and molecular biology has influenced the discovery of many proteins, peptides and peptidomimetics as potential therapeutic agents. Unfortunately, the practical application of these potential drugs is often restricted by the difficulties of delivering them to target site(s) due to the presence of biological barriers. Recently, a new method to improve the drug delivery, that is by modulating the intercellular junction, has been evaluated. Modulation of intercellular junction could be achieved by modulating the proteins which play important role in establishing the intercellular junction, one of which is cadherin. In the present work we have demonstrated the ability of several cadherin peptides, i.e. Ac-LFSHAVSSNG-NH2 (HAV-10), Ac-SHAVSS-NH2 (HAV-6), Ac-QGADTPPVGV-NH2 (ADT-10), and Ac-ADTPPV-NH2 (ADT-6) to modulate the intercellular junction of MDCK (Madin Darby Canine Kidney) cells, this finding is a contribution to the establishment of a new method to improve the drug delivery by utilization of cadherin peptides by modulating the intercellular junction.

Abstract

The Effect of Upwelling on Distribution and Abundance of Phytoplankton in Indonesia. East Monsoon is monsoon where upwelling process happened in Banda Sea. Information about upwelling effect to the abundance and distribution of phytoplankton in Banda Sea is not known much.yet. That way has been done the investigation in August 1997 as vice of east monsoon and October 1998 as vice of transition monsoon as comparation.. The abundance and distribution data collected by taken phytoplankton sample in 100 m depth to surface by using plankton net with diameter 31 cm, 120 cm length, and eyes net size 80 µm. The results in east monsoon (August 1997) where (upwelling) still done. This correlation seen from regresi value between temperature and salinity (r2 = 84,1 %), temperature and nitrate (94,5%) In east monsoon recorded 33 phytoplankton species, composition of phytoplankton is varied more compared to transition monsoon where found 26 phytoplankton species only. In east monsoon dominance phytoplankton is Chaetoceros sp. Further analysis by using multivariate analysis, nitrate factor affect to abundance, composition, and distribution of phytoplankton.

Abstract

Effect of Heavy Metals Pollution to Seawater Quality and Fishery Resources (Case Study on Fish Death in Jakarta Bay). Observation on heavy metals content in sea water were carried out in Jakarta Bay waters in May 2004. Heavy metals observed were Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn and Ni. This observation is conducted with fishes total death in this waters. Observation is done in Ancol beach 1 (3 stations), Ancol beach 2 (4 stations), Cilincing (3 stations), and Dadap River estuary (4 Station). The results showed that the average concentration of Hg, Cd and Cu in Ancol beach 1 were

Abstract

Study of the Capability of Niosomes that Used Maltodextrin from Garut Starch (Maranta arundinaceae Linn.) as a Chlorpheniramine Maleate Carrier. The aim of this research was to study the entrapment ability of ampiphylic drug, chlorpheniramine maleate (CTM), by niosome. Like liposomes, niosomes is an encapsulated drug carrier that has important role in a drug release system. Niosomes and liposomes are unstable, but niosomes could be handled by proniosomes. Proniosomes in this research was prepared using the combination of maltodextrin DE 5-10 from arrowroot starch (Maranta arundinaceae Linn.), Span 60 and Cholesterol as non ionic surfactant in six formulas. The entrapment level of CTM depends on combination of surfactant in proniosomes, drug substance concentration and proniosomes quantity, temperature, and hydration times. Niosomes (10mM) that was prepared by proniosomes in formula 3 has been hydrated at 80 oC for 2 minutes using demineralized water could entrapped 94,04%, of 1 mM CTM. The proniosomes in formula 3 was increased up to 30 mM surfactant and 10 mM CTM in niosomes, could increase the entrapment of CTM.

Abstract

The Multiple Query of Information Retrieval System Based on Inference Network. The multiple query is a query that combines Boolean and probabilistic query on the information retrieval inference network system, the system consists of two components i.e. a dokument and a query network, they are joined by links between the representation and query concepts. The document network build an inverted belief list and the query network are evaluated by using canonical matrix. The similarity process between representation and query conceps yields a set of relevant document retrieved. The experiment has showed that the use of multiple query formulations will significantly improve the retrieval perfomance, compared to either the Boolean or probabilistic query

Abstract

Study on The Content of Pb in Twigs And Leaves of Kangkung (Ipomoea reptans Poir) Boiled With The Addition of NaCl And Acetic Acid. Kangkung is a kind of favorable vegetables that used to grow near a river, and is cultivated and watered with water from the river. If the river is polluted by heavy metals, there is a risk that the plant is contaminated too. A study on the content of Pb in kangkung planted in Pb contaminated media has been conducted, and it was proven that Pb was found in the plant. Land kangkung (Ipomoea reptans) was used as sample, and was planted in hydrophonic media, and watered with Multigrow Complete Plant Food (2000 mg/L) and Pb solution (2 mg/L) twice a day. Samples were taken based on the age of 54 days, then the twigs and leaves were boiled in different ways: I. Boiled with no addition, II. Boiled with addition of NaCl , and III. Boiled with addition of acetic acid. IV. Unboiled sample as the control. Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometer (ICPS) Fison 3410+ was used to measure the Pb content. It was shown that boiling the kangkung reduced the Pb content in the leaves as well as in the twigs; however, the acetic acid addition showed the least effect. In the leaves the three different ways of boiling did not show significant different, while in twigs the different was significant.

Abstract

Study on Generalization Capability of Support Vector Machine in Splice Site Type Recognition of DNA Sequence. Recently, support vector machine has become a popular model as machine learning. A particular advantage of SVM over other machine learning is that it can be analyzed theoretically and at same time can achieve a good performance when applied to real problems. This paper will describe analytically the using of SVM to solve pattern recognition problem with a preliminary case study in determining the type of splice site on the DNA sequence, particularity on the generalization capability. The result obtained show that SVM has a good generalization capability of around 95.4 %.
