Abstract

Job stress among nurses in Muara Enim: physical and mental workloads analysisPurposeThis study aimed to determine the description of the level of job stress and identify related factors that include workload, job satisfaction and individual characteristics of nurses in hospital of dr. H. Mohamad Rabain Muara Enim. MethodsThis research was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Research subjects were 63 nurses who were selected using proportional stratified random sampling. Independent variables were physical and mental workload. External variables were job satisfaction, gender, age, years of service as employee, and marital status. The dependent variable was job stress. Job stress due to work measurements used a stress scoring questionnaire as the scoring method. Statistical tests were conducted to determine the correlation of job stress with the job stress factors of respondents using chi-square tests on physical workload variable and Fisher's Exact tests for mental workload with Confidence Interval (CI) 95% and p-value < 0.05. ResultsThere was no correlation between physical workload towards job stress in hospital of dr. H. Mohamad Rabain District of Muara Enim (p = 0.69). There was also no correlation between mental workload towards job stress in hospital of dr. H. Mohamad Rabain of Muara Enim district (p = 0.77). ConclusionFactors affecting the physical and mental workload are the absence of percentage between direct, indirect and non-nursing actions, and the differences between young and capable nurses. The work stress experienced by nurses is more influenced by other job factors.

Abstract

People living in isolated communities are vulnerable to suffering from illness because of their lack of access to available known effective treatment in health facilities around them, including in maternal and child issues. The goal of this in-depth interview and one month-direct observation living in the community is to explore the belief and available structure of local health-seeking behavior among the Suku Anak Dalam community. Our findings suggest that the community has its own traditional belief that explains their birth practices. Interpretation of concepts such as anak peranakan, taputangan, pekarom, and delom system are unique and inseparable from the interpretation of their ideal life and their trust in God. In the other side, their poor perception about public health facilities is influenced by their experience dealing with formal health facilities. When a community gets what they perceived as poor services, they will not believe and do not come back to seek help from formal health facilities. Our study confirmed that the cultural explanation of birth and belief related to traditional birth delivery services remain existent and practiced, which limits access to a government health facility. If the community is free to choose alternative care outside their traditional system, people may obtain effective treatments from the surrounding health facilities. SAD women feel comfortable with their cultural practices. They have a negative perception and feel uncomfortable about formal health facilities showed inadequate government efforts to bring services to a specific social group. Health workers in isolated areas with traditional belief should be prepared and paid under a contract basis, different from the regular workers. They need to improve the communication skills that allow them to engage with people from different cultures. They need to work with officers from other sectors, both in formal and informal settings.

Abstract

“Difficult to meet supervisor” and “lack of feedbacks”: student’s perception of problems in writing final year project in undergraduate program Objective: This study explores the role of mentoring felt by the students involved in the making. Specifically, we want to disclose what students consider helpful and what is considered to be less helpful for final project preparation. Methods: Respondents were 82 third year nursing students at Poltekkes Kemenkes Pontianak who were writing thesis. The questionnaire consisted of 16 questions consisting of (a) lecturer-student communication and interaction, (b) mentoring roles and responsibilities, and (c) quality of mentorship. The questionnaire consisted of a question following the items in Beck et al.’s research, measured by a Likert scale consisting of good, moderate, and less. Six students were taken for in-depth interviews, selected based on different counselors. Results: Of the 16 themes about mentoring, “pretty good” at most for all items. Item analysis showed support of several concerns that have been predicted. Although “like the guiding figure” and “feel the support of lecturers including two things that stand out in the opinion of students about thesis supervisor figure. Students reported two main issues in their mentoring process: “advisers are difficult to see” and “lack of meaningful input from advisers”. Conclusion: Student satisfaction in mentoring is influenced by the quality of the mentors. Students feel satisfied if the characteristics, roles and responsibilites of the supervisor in accordance with student expectations. This study ensures that there are limitations in the availability and seriousness of the lecturers in thesis coaching. Further studies on mentorship and support capacity are needed.

Abstract

Social support for people with mental disorders in poor areas: a case study in GunungkidulPurposeThe purpose of this study was to describe the role of mental health cadres in the effort of community based mental health service at Wonosari II Health Center Gunungkidul.MethodsQualitative research was done by case study approach. The cadres were chosen purposively with the criteria of: having attended training or socialization of mental health, having at least 2 years work experience related to community mental health service, and still active. Data collection was done through in-depth interviews and document utilization.ResultsCadres play an important role in providing social support. First, the cadre can show empathy to the family of people with mental disorders by building close relationships and facilitating the social acceptance of the community. Secondly, the cadres provide socialization related to mental disorders and mental health services. Third, approaches through home visits, referral assistance to health services, and health insurance and social assistance suggest that cadres facilitate access to care for people with mental disorders.ConclusionThere was a high social awareness of cadres to families with mental disorders in poor neighborhoods. We found that poverty does not limit people to share with others, and social support helps prevent mental illness from getting worse.
