Austronesian: Journal of Language Science & Literature is an open access journal, single blind peer-reviewed, published by CV Wahana Publikasi. This journal is an area studies journal that publishes research articles, especially in the field of linguistics and literature covering all regions or groups of Austronesian languages. Austronesian: Journal of Language Science & Literature aims to disseminate information and/or research results on Austronesian languages so that the characteristics (identity) of the Austronesian language are maintained and of course increasingly developed. This is done as an effort or preventive measure against the influence of science and technology developments that can destroy the function of language as the identity of a region. Austronesian: Journal of Language Science & Literature publishes original research articles and book reviews that are open to academics, researchers, students, practitioners and all language observers. Abstract

This research is intended to analyze a news text entitled “Pakar Sebut Pemilih Prabowo Cenderung Beralih ke Sandi Ketimbang Anies” based on the Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis. This research aims to examine the construction of news about the Prabowo voters tend to switch to Sandi instead of Anies. The main data was obtained from CNN Indonesia.com. In analysing the data, researchers used Norman Fairclough analysis model that focuses on the three dimensions, namely text dimension, discourse dimension, and socio-cultural dimension. The results shown that the tendency of news texts to be more in favor of Sandiaga Uno, who is predicted to run in the 2024 presidential election. Through the news texts, the contrast of several parties is shown, which favors Sandiaga Uno. Furthermore, researcher assumed that news text is not only as a media for announcement, however news text as a social construction that is full of power that somehow can marginalized someone.

Abstract

This research is about communication styles in Indonesia’s television series. The research was conducted because it had an interesting and unique phenomenon in it where the characters or actors and actresses had a certain communication style, which makes it interesting to be conducted. The communication style and the way of actors in Indonesia’s Television series ‘My nerd girl’ communicate are the aims of this research. This research was descriptive qualitative research because it aimed to describe and explain in depth a case that would be researched. The data was documentation which consists of the video and transcript of Indonesia’s television series called My Nerd Girl. The data was analyzed by using theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana, which consists of three steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research results showed that the communication style found in Indonesia’s Television series ‘My nerd girl’ are into slang, bad words, positive, and negative words. Another research result revealed that the way of communication in that series is just a style of speaking or the style of communication, which means certain characters speak English naturally in some scenes.

Abstract

Since many people have different cultural groups or cultural values sometimes causes misunderstandings. The research used descriptive qualitative which to investigate the different perspectives of both cultures such as the problem of misunderstanding of communication, the difference in communication styles and also to investigate the contrasting perspective in oral or written communication. The respondents of the research are Indonesian and Malaysian who took on social media YouTube. In collecting the data, the researchers used the observation with a video on YouTube and used diary notes to write the essential data of the research. The results shown that even though Malaysia and Indonesia are neighboring countries and these two countries almost have similar cultures, there are some different perspectives of understanding, especially in communication. Two aspects of communication became the issues of these two countries such as verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The different perspectives of communication style which classified into two aspects, namely verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The different perspective of verbal communication style occurs by using the words used or intonation to communicate or transfer the meaning. Meanwhile, the different perspectives of verbal communication style can be seen in the mannerism such as gestures or mimicking of people.

Abstract

Writing as a productive skill is considered a difficult skill to be mastered because not every student has better English proficiency which somehow has become an obstacle for them to construct better grammatical text. This research aims to improve the writing skills of recount text of students of Class CA of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The approach of this research is Class Action Research (CAR). The data collected are observation, interviews literary research, and tests. The results of this research showed that the implementation of Questions Guiding Techniques (QFT) was conducted successfully which can be seen through the results of cycle I and the progress made by students in cycle II. The results of cycle I (pre-test) and cycle II (post-test) were examined using an assessment rubric of writing text skills of recount text which consists of 5 aspects those are content, organization, structure, vocabulary, and mechanics with the score 4-3-2-1 (best-better-poor-poorer). The results of the cycle I (4-1) are 17-19-32-52. The result of cycle II shows that there is improvement in students understanding of grammar and writing skill on the recount text because score 4-3 is increased (36 – 95) and 2-1 is decreased (86 – 25) which shows better writing skills of the students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the verbal and non-verbal signs as well as the meaning contained in the “AQUA Life: Care for Nature, Nature Cares for You” Advertisement. This study used a qualitative method. An observation method was used to collect the data. The data were taken from the YouTube platform. In analysing the verbal and non-verbal signs based on the Saussure’s semiotic theory while in analyzing the meaning of the verbal and non-verbal signs based on the Barthes’s theory. In addition, the study of colors was done using the approach of color term submitted by Cerrato. As the result, the researchers found three verbal signs and three non-verbal signs in this advertisement. The advertiser highlighted the advertised product in this advertisement, attempting to persuade the viewers that using 100% recycled products is one of the essential things to protect this planet. Furthermore, this advertisement also emphasized the importance of consuming mineral water for body health. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the “AQUA Life: Care for Nature, Nature Cares for You” advertisement employed meaningful sentences to gain the attention of their target consumers.
