Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpersonal communication patterns of college students in facing barriers to face-to-face interaction influenced by dependence on social media. The development of digital technology has changed the way individuals communicate, where students tend to interact more actively through social media than in person. This has resulted in a shift in interpersonal communication patterns from face-to-face to mediated communication. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to understand the phenomena occurring among college students. The results show that social media dependence affects the quality of interpersonal communication, such as a decline in direct communication skills, the emergence of barriers to social interaction, and a tendency to avoid face-to-face communication. In addition, phenomena such as Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) also strengthen students' attachment to social media, thereby increasing barriers to social interaction in the real world. Although social media provides convenience in communication, excessive use can reduce the quality of interpersonal relationships and emotional closeness between individuals. Therefore, awareness is needed in managing social media use to maintain a balance between online and face-to-face communication.

Abstract

Nonverbal communication plays an important role in the learning process, particularly for deaf students who rely heavily on visual aspects in receiving information. In practical learning at vocational high schools (SMK), nonverbal communication is used by teachers as the primary means of delivering instructions so that students can understand the procedural steps accurately. This study aims to analyze the pattern of nonverbal communication used by fashion teachers in providing practical instructions to deaf students at SMKN 10 Medan. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, and documentation involving fashion teachers as the main informants. The data were then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that nonverbal communication is the main strategy in delivering practical instructions, including the use of hand gestures, clear lip movements, facial expressions, and direct demonstrations. In addition, the use of visual instructions such as written explanations and direct examples helps students understand the procedural steps systematically. Teachers also apply flexible and adaptive communication through repeated explanations and the use of peer assistance.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the participation of housewives in improving family economy through onion peeling work on Jalan Selamat Ketaren MMTC. The research used a descriptive qualitative method involving three housewives as informants. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings show that onion peeling is a flexible economic activity because it can be carried out while maintaining domestic responsibilities. Although the income earned is relatively small and unstable, it still contributes to daily household needs, children’s education expenses, and helps reduce the husband’s economic burden. This participation also strengthens the economic resilience of the family.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the interpersonal communication patterns of traditional leaders in transmitting Deli Malay cultural values to youth, and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, using interviews, observation, and documentation techniques with traditional leaders and youth as informants. The results indicate that interpersonal communication occurs directly through face-to-face interactions in traditional activities and daily life. Communication is two-way, enabling dialogue, feedback, and closeness between traditional leaders and youth. The cultural values inherited include politeness, respect for elders, togetherness, and religious values. Values are transmitted through advice, role models, and youth involvement in traditional activities. Supporting factors include social closeness, family support, and youth involvement in traditional activities. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include the influence of modernization, technological developments, differences in mindsets, and low youth interest in local culture. Thus, the effectiveness of adaptive interpersonal communication is the key to maintaining the sustainability of Deli Malay cultural values amidst the development of the times.

Abstract

"Moderation" derives from the word "moderate," signifying an absence of excess or the maintenance of a middle ground. When paired with "religious," the term "religious moderation" refers to a religious stance that eschews violence and avoids extremism in religious practice. Religious moderation represents a perspective and practice that emphasizes balance, tolerance, and respect for diversity within society. While rapid social change, globalization, and intense intercultural interaction can enrich societal dynamics, they also harbor the potential for conflict if the values of pluralism are not managed wisely. The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs under the leadership of Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, established religious moderation as a national agenda starting in 2019. Consequently, this study aims to elucidate the organizational communication strategy employed by the North Sumatra Provincial Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs to disseminate the values of religious moderation at MAN 2 Model Medan. This study employs a descriptive method with a qualitative approach to describe and explain real-world situations based on existing facts. Data collection techniques included interviews, observation, and documentation conducted by the researcher at the study site. Based on the findings regarding the North Sumatra Provincial Ministry of Religious Affairs' organizational communication strategy for promoting religious moderation values at MAN 2 Model Medan, it can be concluded that the strategy was implemented systematically, incorporating the five communication components proposed by Carl I. Hovland: communicator, message, media, communicant (audience), and effect.
