Abstract

Background: Endodontic treated teeth are more susceptible to fracture. Correct restoration can minimize fracture risk, for example crown and post-core systems. Based on its manufacturing, Fiber Reinforced Composite (FRC) Post was divided into prefabricated and fabricated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences of fracture resistance between Prefabricated and Fabricated FRC Post systems on different post canal width. Method: The samples of this study were 28 premolars that were cut with 15 mm in length. The samples were treated with conventional endodontic method using gutta percha and resin sealer. The samples were divided into two groups and two sub-groups. The first two group was based on canal width consisting of 14 teeth each group with two different canal width (1.4 mm and 2.1 mm). Then, the first group was divided again into two subgroups based on the dowel use (Prefabricated post and Fabricated Post). Universal Testing machine was used to test the samples resistance. Result: This research showed that there were differences in fracture resistance on different post canal width. However, there were no fracture resistance differences between prefabricated post and fabricated post.

Abstract

One of the long-term complications of diabetes mellitus is diabetic ulcers (15%) and 85% of the cases are the cause of amputation on patients with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic foot ulcers increase apoptosis and decrease fibroblast proliferation of fibroblasts and inflammatory reactions is elongated, this is as evidenced by the presence of neutrophil granulocytes in large quantities in the wound. Neutrophil granulocytes secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines mainly TNF-α. TNF-α is causing wound healing becomes disconnected and uncoordinated. This paper discussed the role of TNF-α in diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Over the last 20 years, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) has contributed in the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for multiphase flows. In the CFD department, a lot of efforts have been performed to provide CFD as a reliable simulation tool for the design, optimization and safety analyses of medium and large scale applications. The tool is expected to contribute in the improvement of the efficient use of energy and resources as well as safety operation. Most of the research activities are related to gas-liquid flows covering dispersed flows, stratified flows and mixture or transition flows. The development is carried out using Euler-Euler two or multi fluid model as the basis. The paper discussed some characteristics of the CFD model development in HZDR started with “simple”, reliable experimental data for validation and stepwise and continuous improvement. The examples of each characteristic were given. The discussions covered three CFD modeling frames which had been developed in HZDR; they were iMUSIG for dispersed flows, AIAD for stratified flows and GENTOP concept for mixture or transitional flows.

Abstract

Garlic (Allium sativum Linn.) is widely known by people as herb, besides having antibacterial property. Alisin is one of antibacterial active substance contained in garlic. The purpose of this study was to test the antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts of garlic leaves and bulbs against Shigella sonnei or dysentery bacteria. The determination of antibacterial activity was conducted by using disk diffusion and dilution methods. Antibacterial test results which had the best inhibitory activities against Shigella sonnei were shown by the extracts of 8% garlic bulbs and 4% garlic leaves with inhibition zone respectively 16mm and 19mm. The result showed the MIC of garlic bulbs extract was 0.5% and garlic leaves extract was 0.25%. The smallest concentration which could kill (MBC) Shigella sonnei was garlic bulbs extract 1% and garlic leaves extract 0.5%. This study showed that the ethanol extracts of garlic leaves and bulbs had antibacterial activity against Shigella sonnei.

Abstract

Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) is a subclass of mobile ad hoc network (MANET), in which it is used to support intelligent transportation system. Generally, the main problem in VANET is in routing protocol. This is a challenging task due to the fact that moving object with certain direction and speed always changes the network topology quickly. Some routing protocols actually have been proposed to deal with routing complexity. In this paper we proposed new approach which was combining the existing routing protocol in order to reduce the dropping package in dynamic environment. By combining mobile infrastructure base routing (MIBR) and advertisement routing, the packet loss could be reduced. MIBR used certain type of vehicle on the road as the priority of routing hop. While, placing fixed wireless infrastructure in the roadside (RSU) would be helpful in case of traffic jam, since it could forward the package to the most far targeted vehicle when other vehicle hop experiences stuck.

Abstract

The paper analyzed a creative teacher handling some variously problematic students in her classroom reflected in Freedom Writers movie. Based on the problem, the paper was aimed at analyzing ways that the creative teacher took to solve the students’ problems. The theoretical framework of the analysis was the Individual Psychological approach by Alfred Adler. Teacher has an important role in human life. As a teacher, he or she not only teaches but also educates the students. To teach means transforming the teacher’s knowledge to the students. Through interaction with students, a teacher gives them various materials of knowledge. The knowledge can be language, mathematics, biology, physics, history, and so on. Meanwhile, to educate means a teacher can educate the students about social norms, ethics, proper manner, morality and the like. To play their roles, teachers often face a lot of problems. The problems ranged from students’ personal problem, their environment problem, lack of facilities of teaching learning process, to their own private problem. Freedom Writers movie, in which the creation was inspired by a true story, delineates complex problems experienced by both the teacher and the students. The teacher, Erin Gruwell, faced her students who had various and complicated problems, which later motivated to find a solution for her students’ problem. Her students’ problem might be racial discrimination, social oppression by the dominant group, social injustice experienced by the marginalized group, and so on. With her creativity of teaching technique, Gruwell created some ways to understand their students’ private problem and found a wise way out of their problems.

Abstract

The research was an attempt to “describe” Poe’s perspective of beauty reflected in “Ligeia”, a short story. This study used American Studies theory that was the reconciliation of time (past, present, future), of space and of academic discipline that were philosophical, historical, and literary approaches. The literary approach used, in this case, was the expressive one. The method applied in this study was analytical descriptive that utilized library research and concentrated the attention on reference sources related to the topic discussed. The result of the study showed that romantic ideas influenced the American society. The most striking ones were the freedom, individualism and equality. Individualism and freedom made Poe’s literary works that in a way can be categorized as classic and in another way, romantic. They were different from the others. This study proved that Poe’s perspective of beauty was that the well designed poem or prose creates the pleasure of totality of beauty. Beauty is the sole legitimate province of the poem. The beauty must be able to elevate soul. It can be found from the contemplation of the beautiful. The study also showed that “Ligeia” reflects the beauty of knowledge.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to describe the current implementation of multicultural education in Indonesia and to describe the implementation of multicultural education in Indonesia in the future. This research was a qualitative research to understand a phenomenon in the social context naturally with the advanced process of interaction between researchers’ in-depth communication and the phenomenon. Subject of research was the researchers, while the research object was the Multicultural Education Implementation of current and forthcoming. The methods of data collection were interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis technique was interactive analysis techniques as disclosed by Miles and Huberman (1984: 23) which included four steps, namely, data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results showed that the implementation of multicultural education with a lot of experience irregularities included the dimensions of the multidimensional concept, the dimension of meaning, the content dimension, the cultural dimension, the dimension of primordialism, the egocentric dimensions, and the religious dimensions. It is expected that the future implementation of multicultural education should be improved both in quantity and quality. However, it will require a profound awareness from the Indonesian citizens that pluralism is a priceless investment. With the plurality, Indonesian people can be dynamic, creative, and innovative. Thus, the understanding should be introduced as early as possible that multicultural education can provide services to all students regardless of their socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic background, race or culture, and equal chance to learn in school. Multicultural education was also based on the fact that students do not learn in a vacuum as their cultures influence them to learn in a certain way. The researchers concluded that nowadays, the implementation of multicultural education faced a complex problem, thus, the future implementation of multicultural education should be able to minimize the various forms of problems that currently appeared.
