Abstract

This study explores the roles of Non-Native English Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) in facilitating the improvement of participants' English speaking skills. The research was prompted by the challenge faced by a NNESTs from Indonesia, who relocated to Kyrgyzstan to teach English as a second language. The teacher lacked cultural knowledge to support his participants' language learning. To address this, the study employed a descriptive qualitative research design and utilized interviews as the primary data collection method to investigate how NNESTs support the development of their participants' English speaking ability. The analysis employed a Miles and Huberman data analysis to identify patterns and themes in the data. The findings reveal that NNESTs design instructional approaches that foster an environment conducive to speaking practice and enable participants to engage in conversation without fear of criticism. Additionally, the teachers provide personalized feedback to help participants identify their areas of weakness. Creating an engaging learning environment encourages participants to use English more frequently.

Abstract

Indonesia has many environmental problems, especially those related to mining. It becomes essential to provide environmental education to the younger generation. However, the environmental education curriculum has not been explicitly found in the body of formal education in Indonesia. The study area is in Gunungkidul Regency, Indonesia where the limestone mining industry has expanded in almost all areas. The purpose of this study is to assess the environmental impacts of limestone mining activities and align the possible integration of environmental education in the study area. To gather data about the environmental impacts of limestone mining activities, a desktop study, field investigation, and interviews with local communities were conducted. Analysis of the Indonesian curriculum and interviews with elementary school teachers were conducted to align the possible integration of environmental education. The environmental impacts of limestone mining activities in the study area include air pollution, water contamination, drought, soil erosion, and road damage. We provide some suggestions for learning materials including an Introduction to environmentally friendly mining activities (Science subjects, grade 4, thematic 3), an Introduction to air pollution impacts in the mining area on human breathing (Science subjects, grade 5, thematic 2), and Introduction about mining activities impacts on the air, water, and soil (Science subjects, grade 5, thematic 8). It is recommended that teachers not only teach theory but also practice and environmental observation.

Abstract

The rapid flow of globalization can threaten the fading of local cultural values in Indonesia. This can be a challenge for the Indonesian people to choose between maintaining or eliminating the existing environmental culture. Therefore, an approach is needed, namely ethnoscience in the learning process. This study aims to describe the ethnoscience of Sedekah Bumi in Bangsri Jepara Village in elementary science material. The method used is qualitative with a phenomenology research design. The subject of this research was village heads and village officials. The data was obtained by observation, interview, and documentation. Data validation was conducted through triangulation. Based on the research results, it is known that ethnoscience learning can be integrated into elementary science learning, as evidenced in every series of almsgiving activities in Bangsri Jepara Village, including ingkang damar murup, colossal dance, shadow puppets, buffalo slaughter, and the penjor  festival. Based on the research that has been done, it is concluded that science content is integrated into grade III, IV, and V SD materials. Grade III material that is integrated with the alms of the earth is a change in the form of objects and the benefits of plants for humans. Grade IV material is the style of motion, the relationship between form and function of animal and plant body parts, and light. Grade V materials are heat transfer, human organs, and the classification of animals based on the type of food they eat. Then, in addition to SD material, namely the emulsion in coconut milk and nutrients in the soil in plants. It is hoped that this research will not only be able to integrate the Sedekah Bumi culture with elementary science material but that students can also relate the almsgiving culture with cultural preservation activities

The results of the study illustrate that 65 respondents received social support in the high category, 12 respondents were included in the very high category, 13 respondents were included in the sufficient category and 5 respondents received low social support from their parents. Of the five aspects of social support, emotional support is the highest with an average score of 20.21, appreciation support 20.47, instrument support 19.96, information support 18.98, and social network support 15.26.
