Abstract

Pornography and masturbation are forms of sexual activity that may have adverse effects on individuals suffering from addiction, leading to reduced self-esteem, particularly among devout religious adherents, due to perceived sinful behavior. This study is a single case report that aims to evaluate the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy in addressing pornography and masturbation addiction. The assessment was conducted using interviews and psychological testing, whilst the intervention comprised six sessions, with each session lasting 90-150 minutes. The results of the intervention reported an alteration in mindset regarding masturbation, as well as a decrease in the frequency of pornography consumption.

Abstract

Mental health challenges remain a significant issue in both developing and developed countries, requiring global attention and intervention. In the modern era, psychological distress caused by various life stressors and negative experiences often triggers brooding, a maladaptive form of rumination characterized by compulsive focus on the causes or consequences of distressing events. This study aimed to examine the effect of expressive writing on the level of brooding in late adolescents. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, involving ten late adolescents in Banda Aceh selected through purposive sampling. The instrument used was the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS). The results showed a significant decrease in brooding levels after the expressive writing intervention (z = -2.810, p = 0.005). These findings showed that expressive writing is an effective, simple, and practical psychological intervention for reducing brooding in late adolescents. Practically, the results of this study can serve as a reference for psychologists and counselors to integrate expressive writing as one of the intervention strategies to enhance adolescent mental well-being.

Abstract

This study aims to describe changes in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. The study employed an online existential counseling intervention with an early-adult client experiencing emotional distress related to romantic relationship problems. The study used a single case study design with a descriptive approach. The client was a 24-year-old woman with depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms in the moderate category based on the DASS-21, with initial scores of 14, 12, and 20, respectively. Existential counseling was conducted online across four sessions. Measurement results showed a decrease in DASS-21 scores over the course of counseling, with final scores of 4 for depression, 6 for anxiety, and 8 for stress. In addition, counseling process notes indicated that the client became increasingly able to reflect on her experiences and to recognize the thoughts and emotions related to the problems she faced. The findings of this study provide a description of changes in psychological condition and the counseling process in an individual case. However, the change in scores cannot be interpreted as evidence of intervention effectiveness, as the study employed a single case study design without a comparison group, a stable repeated baseline, or follow-up measurement.

Abstract

This case report describes an empathy training intervention aimed at reducing verbal aggression among adolescents. Verbal aggression may occur in peer interactions and negatively affect interpersonal relationships. The objective of this case report was to describe the implementation of empathy training and examine changes in verbal aggression and empathy using a pretest–posttest design supported by interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. The intervention involved seven eleventh-grade students at a public senior high school in Surabaya and consisted of psychoeducation, role-play, video-based discussions, and self-reflection activities. Verbal aggression scores decreased after the intervention. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted and indicated a significant difference in verbal aggression scores, W = 28.00, p = .019. Empathy scores also showed significant difference after the intervention t(6) = −3.82, p = .009. These findings suggest that empathy training may be considered as one intervention approach to support the development of empathy and reduce verbal aggression among adolescents in school settings. However, the findings should be interpreted cautiously given the small number of participants, absence of a comparison group, and limited follow-up period.

Abstract

Developing Personal Growth Initiative (PGI) enables students to intentionally engage in self-development in today's dynamic environment. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Pelatihan Pertumbuhan Pribadi (Personal Growth Training), a training program developed based on Intentional Growth Training, in increasing PGI among Indonesian university students in both short-term and one-year follow-up assessments. The program consists of psychoeducation on PGI and structured growth activities that have been shown to enhance personal growth. This preliminary study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest with follow-up design and involved 12 undergraduate students from Sriwijaya University who were categorized as having moderate PGI and completed all intervention sessions. PGI was measured using the Personal Growth Initiative Scale II, and the data were analyzed using paired-sample t-tests. The results indicated a significant increase in PGI from pretest to posttest (t = 6.159, p < 0.001, d = 1.778) and from pretest to follow-up (t = 5.191, p < 0.001, d = 1.565), while no significant difference was found between posttest and follow-up scores (t = −0.668, p > 0.05, d = 0.201). These findings suggest that participation in Personal Growth Training was associated with increased PGI scores, with improvements maintained at both the posttest and one-year follow-up assessments. Further studies using randomized controlled trial designs are recommended to strengthen the evidence.

Abstract

Abstract. Persistent depressive disorder rooted in unresolved grief often presents therapeutic challenges when treated with symptom-focused approaches. This case study explores the effectiveness of a 10-session Gestalt therapy intervention in reducing depressive symptoms in a young adult woman with dysthymia. Using a qualitative single-subject design, the intervention was applied to a 21-year-old who experienced the loss of both parents at age of 15. The therapy focused on enhancing emotional awareness, resolving unfinished grief, and completing the Gestalt cycle. Sessions were held daily for 30-45 minutes each. Pre- and post-intervention depression levels were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results showed a significant reduction in depressive symptoms, with BDI scores decreasing from moderate to mild depression. Qualitative data indicated improvements in emotional regulation, self-awareness, grief acceptance, and future planning. The findings suggest that Gestalt therapy can be effective for individuals with persistent depression rooted in unresolved loss.

Abstract

Elementary school students who exhibit off-task behavior during learning activities face obstacles in completing academic tasks optimally. Off-task behavior is characterized by a tendency to divert attention from the task at hand. This condition can affect students’ academic performance even if they possess adequate intellectual capacity. Therefore, behavioral interventions are needed to consistently enhance students’ engagement in completing academic tasks. This case report describes the implementation of behavioral modification using a token economy for a second-grade elementary school student exhibiting off-task behavior during writing-based classroom activities. Assessments in this study were conducted through interviews, observations, and psychological tests. During the baseline, task completion was low and variable, ranging from 0%- 33.3%. During implementation, task completion generally increased despite fluctuations across sessions, reaching 100% in Session 7. A brief post-intervention follow-up with the classroom teacher suggested that improvement in task-completion behavior was not consistently maintained; however, no repeated quantitative follow-up measurement was conducted. Several limitations need to be considered when interpreting the results of this study.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of Functional Family Therapy (FFT) combined with a family-function psychoeducational video in reducing behavioral difficulties among adolescents. Using a pretest–posttest design without a control group, five adolescents identified with behavioral problems based on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) received FFT intervention consisting of four structured weekly sessions (90–120 minutes each) delivered over one month covering engagement and motivation, behavior change with the adolescent, behavior change with the parent, and generalization supplemented by an educational video watched independently at home. Given the very small sample size, pretest–posttest differences were analyzed using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test rather than a parametric test. Results showed a decrease in the mean total difficulties score from 16.2 to 9.6, with the most consistent reduction observed in the conduct problems subscale (a decrease in all five subjects) and in peer problems (four of five subjects), while the hyperactivity subscale showed almost no change (only one of five subjects improved). As the exact two-sided Wilcoxon test can reach a minimum p-value of only .0625 when n = 5, none of the observed reductions reached the conventional significance threshold of p < .05, although the total difficulties score and the conduct problems subscale approached this boundary (p = .0625) with a fully consistent direction of change across subjects. These preliminary findings suggest that integrating FFT with a psychoeducational video may have the potential to support improvements in family functioning and adolescents’ conduct-related behavior, but the very small sample, the absence of a control group, and the simultaneous delivery of FFT and the video mean the results cannot be interpreted as definitive evidence of effectiveness. Larger, controlled studies are needed to confirm these preliminary indications.
